10,000 steps plus exercise?

All those who wear a pedometer, do you shoot for 10,000steps in addition to an exercise routine? My 10,000 steps usually come from a 2mile walk and my regular errand running daily routine. Sometimes I exercise and sometimes I don't. I do chi gong which does not accumulate any steps, and other times I do body weight exercises. But do your 10000 steps come from exercise or just from your daily routine?

From exercise. It's pretty hard to get 10000 steps from just daily moving around. That is 5 miles... who walks around their house or work for 5 miles except maybe teachers, waitresses and the like.

With that said, I just did a blog post on walking and 10,000 steps and what is also recommended is that at least 30 minutes of that walking be fast walking or at least 100 steps per minute - for heart health (as that raises the heartbeat and is more aerobic).

Well, me. I live in NYC. We walk everywhere here. I can easily get 10,000steps a day just by walking to the market, taking my kid to school or the playground, and doing chores around the house. I accumulate 10000 steps per day without actual exercise sometimes.

It varies. Some days I'll aim for 10,000 steps, period.
But if it's a gorgeous day, I'll try to get out for at least one good walk during the morning or afternoon, plus exercise in the evenings. Those are the days I'm closer to 25,000 steps. :)

That is exercise, you just don't realize it because that is what you do to live where you live. Walking to the store, walking to the school. Walking to the playground. Walking = exercise. THIS is the exact kind of exercise we have done most of our existence as humans. Walking the fields, tending the fields, carrying the baskets or bushels, etc. We didn't run around the camp to burn more calories. Our daily lives WERE our exercise and it was plenty.

And, exercise with a purpose is the BEST sort of exercise! I bike to the store frequently, and walk my son to and from school. I count that as exercise and in my step count.

I wear my jawbone Up (similar to Fitbit) and average around 3800 to 5000 steps just around the house, going to the grocery store, etc.

Now if I go to my 1 hr, Jazzercise class (and I have tested this 3 times now) I am getting another 4500 to 4800 steps. Then I went on a 3.75 mile hike and that was a 10k step day.

These are fun gadgets, and very helpful as they can sync with myfitnesspal.

I shoot for 12K steps most days, 20K steps on "reach" days and 7K steps on busy days (I have a program at work; I upload my steps and these are the different reward levels).

Most days I clock around 5K from normal activity. I reach my goals by adding walks (usually with hubby and/or dog) and the treadmill, which I have set up so I can browse the web at the same time (like I am now!).
