What non-gym exercise do you do?
So what non-gym exercise do you all do? I thought it'd be interesting to see the variety of things everyone does. :smug: I go out walking - lately when going on the longer walks, I take my brother's bordercollie with me to keep me moving. When inside, I sometimes walk in place, use my shake weight, and have a thigh master.

Every night my husband and I take our German Shepherd and walk/jog about 3 miles on average around our apartment complex. My hubby also bought me a hula hoop the other day. As soon as I get the hula hooping DVD I'm gonna start doing that for about 15 minutes a day to strengthen my core. Other than that I am training using the Couch to 5K app on my phone (I'm on week 2). I hate exercising, so I try to make it fun to keep me going.

Workout Dvds and jogging... I find Turbo Jam fun! Itīs a great workout!
|
I walk. I try to fit it into the day. Like I walk from the train to work and at lunch. At home I have a recumbent bike and I also have like bungie cords to work muscles. There are also the "on demand" work out shows but so far too weary of my neighbors to do that.
|
Lately I have been taking out the stroller and walking to the gym with my daughter. I actually had to ran last week when we got caught in the rain.
|
I recently started climbing up stairs and I've been trying to see how many flights I can do in single day... the other week I made it to a 115 floors on one day... I was going for 100 and then I still felt pretty good, so I thought I would try for 125... but I decided to not keep pushing it... so I stopped and called it quits at 115... But now I know that I'll definitely be able to do 125 soon... and I would even like to make an attempt at 150 eventually... so we'll see... and who knows I may even enter the the Empire State Building Run-Up someday... :D

I am active all day long with housework, cleaning, and on my feet all afternoon with students at work....I rarely sit down for long unless it's late evening...I do grocery shopping, errands, haul recycling out, laundry, stuff like that....
I like to bike ride in good weather but it's rarely good weather here yet...I also like to run and walk on a trail by the coast/tideline But I'm also at the gym about 5 days a week anyhow putting in a pretty hard workout |
Another great exercise--just sitting on the couch--is grab a couple of canned goods--(if you don't have hand weights) and do bi-cept curls. You can also use a sturdy coffee table to work the backs of your arms.
Albeit--I workout at Jazzercise 4 to 5 times a week and we use hand weights there. |
C25K (Started week 3 today)
Basic yoga poses (here's a link:http://www.fitnessmagazine.com/worko...er-yoga-poses/) Ride my bike Walking DS in his stroller Wii Fit (for fun only, not really to "work out") Hoola Hoop! |
Since DH and I don't have a car we walk everywhere. We get at least 30 min of walking in every day. Also, I have two 10 lbs dumbbells at home that I use for my arms and core or I just do bodyweight exercises. As far as workout DVD's goes - I've only tried Tiffany Rothe workouts on Youtube before but they definitely helped.
However - I prefer the gym! |
Missy Krissy - I've been wanting to do some yoga poses at home but never found a website I liked. The one you posted is actually really good, thanks! :)

Everything I've done so far has been sans gym, though I am hoping to join the gym starting in June. I'm currently doing C25K religiously, I'm on week 7 and never thought I'd make it that far. I also strength train at home, I'm doing a squat challenge and sit up challenge and I do arm exercises using an app. Sporadically I'll also do workout videos- 30DS is the one I usually use. I hike a bit and would like to more regularly as it is probably the toughest workout I do. Lastly, I play tennis every once in a while and it is an exhausting workout.
The only reason I want to join the gym next month is to get some heavy lifting in....and avoid the summer heat. |
I actually don't even belong to a gym. I prefer to do the Insanity workouts at my house (they kick my butt harder than any gym workout I've tried, and they're cheaper!) I also try to walk my dogs at least 2 miles a day when the weather is nice. Also I just tried kayaking and paddle boarding on Lake Erie- which was an incredible experience!

I walk
|
I actually gave up the gym a few years ago, I've always hated it and could never stay commited. Pre prego I started running outside, pavement and trails, loved it!!! Doubt I'll ever set foot in a gym again. I do have a treadmill at home for when I absolutely cannot run outside. DH and I went biking as well. Now I just go for walks outside, since I'm about to pop! lol, but after I'll be back to outside running..well ,walking at first :)
|
I swim laps in my friend's pool 3 days a week and do Leslie Sansone Walk at Home videos a couple days a week.
I'm starting physical therapy for my shoulder next week hoping to improve strength and mobility so I can attempt Jillian Michaels' 30-day Shred program. I think I've gotten my knees strong enough with swim and walking (plus taking 40+ pounds off didn't hurt), but my arthritic shoulder isn't improving as the weight comes off. |
I walk a lot. I play tennis (by myself against a wall).
|
swimming, even though my pool is tiny, I swim the perimeter so at least I get the distance around. I also go for nightly walks. This summer weather is PERFECT for a nice stroll.
|
I haven't been to the gym since spring arrived. :p
I run, go to yoga class, do yoga videos, walk, go to bellydance class. I just tried a hula hoop class, and it was so fun (but hard!) that I bought a hoop. |
There're so many great strategies the other folks have shared. Awesome. I join the bunch with no-gym workouts:
1) no car so the family travels all by foot, bike, or public trans 2) exercise by video (4 x week; FIRM 500 calorie burn with Kelsie Daniels) 3) bike for exercise I'm older now so it's harder to lose weight. I'm now exercising and eating in a formula of 15% calorie deficit. It's tough but seems to be working...FINALLY. |
I love to Hike - and I am fortunate to live in Colorado where hiking is accessible and enjoyable to do.
|
Outside of the gym I play roller derby relatively competitively, and ultimate frisbee just for fun both a couple times per week. And some hiking/swimming whenever I get the chance, but again just for fun, not seriously aimed at fitness.
All this hula hoop talk makes me think I should dig my old corduroy beast out though... |
I walk my dog on paved trails about 3.5 miles a day. On weekends, I try to drive somewhere to dirt trails, or else try to go swimming at my mom's condo pool.
I just picked up some rollerblades at a garage sale, but haven't had the guts to try them yet! I also have cross-country skis for outdoor exercise in winter. I have a bike and a vision of myself using it to run errands, but I haven't gotten a lock for it yet. I also have a hula hoop in my garage that I am going to drag out, thanks to this thread. :) I also do a lot of yard work with manual methods (walking mower instead of riding mower, hand tools instead of power tools), and I garden. [I wouldn't count these as exercise, but steps to being less sedentary.] |
