At what weight can you start jogging?

Hi everyone!

Does anyone know what weight you should be at to be able to start jogging?
I'm at 254 and at this weight, I think it would be too taxing on my legs.
Has anyone noticed an ease in jogging at a specific weight?

Thanks :)

Kristy

Good question. I also feel that would be too heavy on my knees where I am.

But I walk loads and even did when I was above 280lbs. I am going to just keep walking!

Jogging is overrated.

I think it depends on a lot of factors beyond just your weight. Have you tried jogging? You won't really know until you try. There's no hard and fast rule. If you're curious I would give it a go - for as long as you can - and if it feels good maybe start a beginner program like Couch 2 5K.

I agree with gymrat, you won't know unless you try. But if it hurts, stop. Also, concrete is worse than asphalt, and a trail would be best.

This is a fantastic post written by someone who ran a HALF MARATHON at 229 pounds.

I started Couch to 5K at 240 pounds and did my first 5K race at 225 pounds. So I definitely know it's possible to run when you're not skinny. I wasn't fast but I was doing it!

You might want to check with your doctor to make certain you don't have any medical issues that would prevent you from running. When you get clearance from your doctor, get fitted for a good pair of running shoes and invest in a high quality sports bra.

Good luck!

They're certainly a handful. I'll give you that!

I started running at 289 pounds. You can do more then you are giving yourself credit for. Don't let your weight hold you back!!

I'm almost 300lbs and I can do it, so I don't think there's a specific weight that's too high! I just started to other day, but I talked to my doctor about it first and she cleared me to go for C25K, so I would suggest something like that to start slow :)

Alright, call me ignorant - what's this C25K you guys are mentioning? :p

thinkfit 03-23-2013 09:53 PM

It's an abbreviation for Couch to 5k, a free, simple program that eases you into running. You can check it out here!

C25K stands for Couch to 5K. It's a program that trains non-runners how to run. I started it last week using their smartphone app

Kristiebee - I was running at my highest weight posted here. 253 - just 1lb less than you and I'm shorter. I highly recommend Couch to 5K. I'm slow, but I'm also fairly sturdy.

Thanks guys - I really appreciate the information!
I will give it a try.
