How do you go from walking to running

I really hate to limit what I can eat... and exercise is probably to be able to remedy this. I been walking 2-5 miles every other day the past month.

Last night I walk for 10 miles.... but it takes too long and I couldn't sustain a run more than 2 minutes. I think it was like 4 hrs all together, and I need to get it done in 2 hrs.

So how can I go from walking to running. Maybe it's all mental, but it just feels horrible lol. I was thinking of doing it again day after tomorrow.

If you have a smartphone, I highly recommend a couch to 5K app. It starts you off alternating just a minute or 2 of running at a time with walking, then builds the running time up. I started it mid-June, and am almost there. It's supposed to take 8 weeks, but I repeated workouts on purpose to go easier on my knees and feet.

If you don't have a smartphone, you can probably find a program and do it on your own with a stopwatch. The app makes it so easy, though - just start it up and go run. :D

I just started running 30 seconds at a time. I would try to increase that every couple times. Depending on how your cardiovascular shape is, you could take from 30 seconds to 2 or even 3 minutes between running intervals. That's how I build up anyway. I can run a good 5 to 7 miles without stopping now, couldn't even go a quarter mile straight 6 months ago. I haven't been very consistent the last couple months either.

You need to do a 12 minute mile to get 10 miles in 2 hours. I'm doing a running program to get back into it where I rotate 1 minute of walking with 3 minutes of running... you could do 1 minute walk, 2 minute run... do that for a week or two and then up it a little bit each time until you can go longer and longer.

Ooh I wanna second Couch to 5k!! :D I hated running and now I really look forward to it. Which is weird for me.

I agree with doing a program like couch to 5k. I started running on June 19th and when I first started I could only run for 30 second intervals (and I was winded)! Now less than 3 months later I can run for 1 hour straight.

You can do it. Just start slow.

Couch to 5 k

Hi
I started the running program 6 weeks ago. I.ve never stuck with anything this long. On saturday I actually ran 20 minutes non stop. I definately could not have done that 6 weeks ago.

Good luck to however you decide to do it. Be sure to give your body a chance to recoup and slowly add distance/time.

If you are trying to lose weight you are probably going to have to limit what you eat. That's just the way it goes. If you exercise 2 hours a day you may just end up eating more and not losing any weight. I assume your goal is weight loss.

That being said, how about lifting weights? That might allow you for more room in your diet. There are several girls here who can eat more now that they lift heavy.

Ive done a couch to 5k and now I have a few 5k's under my belt. Im still pretty slow with a time of 37-38 minutes but the program totally works. Slow and steady/ babysteps.

When I was at my heaviest weight I looked up plans such as Couch to 5K. You can find similar plans on Runners World or other fitness sites and it helps you gradually turn into running. It worked very well for me and now I can't stand just walking anymore!
