Onward and upward: did W6D1 on Saturday and W6D2 on Monday. I'm excited about and dreading trying W6D3, lol. Ugh... I keep telling myself I'm building a beautiful, strong and healthy body - this is hard work but it is worth it! Right...? :D

WTG, Cattails! You can do it! And yes, it's totally worth it! :D

I am now in W8... 28 minute run. Wasn't so long ago that I was shocked at being able to run 3 minutes straight! Crazy what this body can do.

Cattails 12-21-2012 05:09 AM

Woo-hoo, 28 minute runs? Chickie, you rock! It is amazing what a body can do when pushed.

After a rest yesterday, today looked like a pretty light day exercise-wise. But then suddenly at 8 pm I felt kind of a thrumming start up inside me and an urge to...run! It didn't go away, so I bundled up and headed out for that W6D3. Unlike most days when I argue and cajole myself into trying to get through the whole run, this time I told myself "22 minute run - quitting is not an option!" Well, I did it! The way I feel right now, I think I just might get to those 28 minute runs too! Yay for us! Okay, I'm a little jazzed right now. :D

SDChickie 12-21-2012 08:20 AM

THAT is awesome, Cattails! YOU rock!! Don't you just love endorphin highs? :D

I saw a meme on fb that totally captures my feelings about running perfectly... "The pain that I endure became the pleasure that I constantly crave."

Aw, that's nice! :o Yes, endorphins = good. Omg, that meme is wonderful! Thank you for sharing it!

Merry Christmas all! :xcheer:

SDChickie 12-23-2012 10:16 AM

When you feel like crap, RUN. This is my profound thought for the day.

Decided to say, "Screw the last 1.5 weeks of C25K!" and instead decided to just graduate yesterday. I finished my first ever (running) 5K yesterday morning. Improved my distance, incline, AND pace in one fell swoop. I'm impressed that being in a funk was such a great motivator for me... and running is a HECK of a lot cheaper therapy than a licensed counselor! On the other hand, I hope that it doesn't take repeated funks for continued improvements!

Hope everyone has a blessed Christmas! :present:

Cattails 12-26-2012 05:49 AM

That's awesome, Chickie! Gratz on a terrific 5K and way to kick the funk!

:woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo:

Pink Hurricane 12-26-2012 06:33 AM

I am highly considering C25K while I am doing 30 Day Shred because I want to run 5Ks and a 10K in the new year!

Cattails 12-27-2012 06:53 PM

Welcome to C25K, it is a great training program!

Brandibooxoxo 12-28-2012 12:43 AM

Downloaded the app, but im just really nervous to start.

SDChickie 12-28-2012 01:18 AM

Don't be nervous! Just do it! When you can't complete it, you try again the next time! It will be okay! 9 weeks ago, I had trouble completing Week 1 Day 1. I repeated a couple of days in Weeks 3 and 4. Now I'm running 5K. You can do this! Just give your body time to adjust and it will happen!

Cattails 12-29-2012 03:51 AM

Like Chickie said, just do it! Spend as much time repeating days and weeks as you need to and move on as you feel ready to push forward. I've been working at it for 13 weeks now and am only now on Week 7. :lol3: Everything starts with the first step, you know? Just put one foot in front of the other and go!

I'm a newbie

Hi All,
I'm new to this site and to exercising. :) I've been reading over the posts a little bit today and you all have really encouraged me to try C25K. I ran track in highschool (14 years ago) and loved it, but I have since gained a lot of weight and want to be healthy and feel good again.
I have downloaded the C25K app on my phone am really excited to start. I do, however, get shin splints REALLY bad and am dreading that part. Does anyone have any tips on how to do deal with those or any other tips they are willing to share.
I have started getting back into shape many times and have always failed, but I refuse to fail this time!! I have a little boy counting on his Mommy to be happy and healthy and as of right now-I am neither of those.

Thanks everyone!!

RachelRawr 01-02-2013 05:10 PM

Howdy!

I thought I would jump into this thread. I started C25k toward the end of last year, but I never got into the habit of doing it and never made it past week 1. This year I really want to make running part of my regular schedule. I really enjoy the time to myself and I find running very fun. Thankfully my schedule for school this next semester will allow me plenty of time in the mornings to work out.

Looking forward to the new year!

Cattails 01-04-2013 03:52 AM

I think there are some stretches that can help prevent shin splints - google it and see what you can find. Sorry, I don't know much about the condition myself!

And welcome to the thread, both of you!

janeyg25 01-04-2013 08:38 AM

After reading through this thread, I think I might start this program on Monday. All of the success stories coming from people who weren't runners before makes me think that maybe I can do it too. I really loathe running through....

Ado Annie 01-04-2013 06:59 PM

Hi y'all! I'm new to the site but not new to C25K... this is my third try and I've always gotten to week 6 but never finished, eek! I'm sort of in week 7 now... I took about a week off of running because I was busy with family/holidays and then I got sick, and had two bad starts on W7D1 this week, so today I just gave up and "made up" my own C25K day, and did two 12-minute splits with a 3-minute walk in between, which ended up being super easy. After that I'm sure I'll finally feel confident enough to do W7D1 next time I run!

Cemommster 01-05-2013 10:20 AM

Hi all , I am making my 3rd attempt with C25K. I now have figured out modifications to hopefully make me successful.

bleuwater 01-05-2013 10:30 PM

I really like this thread. I am new to this Forum, new to my weight loss plan and new to wanting to run. I have never felt like I could run, nor wanted to. But, I have always envied those people who loved it and seemed addicted to it. I've been walking since starting my plan on Jan 2. Today I walked 5 miles. Feels great and I realize that I love walking outside much more than on the treadmill, even though I am in Philly and its cold here. I also seem to go much faster outside.

Question: Is this program an iPhone app? I dont know where to find the actual program.

Anyone else doing this in the Philly area?

Cattails 01-06-2013 05:20 AM

Welcome to the thread, good to see more people trying out C25K. :) Good for you, Janey, to give it a go - if you find you still really don't like running, there are a lot of other forms of exercise to do; pick one that you love, the important thing is to keep on moving!

I don't know about the apps, I don't have an iPhone myself. Try googling C25K; I've been following the one from coolrunning.com but there are a few programs, take your pick!

I'm actually on Week 8 now - gee, the end is in sight! I'm so slow that I only cover a little over 2 miles in the 28 minutes, so I've got to work on increasing my speed. I'm just happy (and amazed!) that I am jogging for an entire 28 minutes now - don't think I ever have before in my life!

Cemommster 01-06-2013 11:09 AM

There is an iphone app. It gives the first week free, then if you like it, you can purchase it for like 2 dollars.

Brandibooxoxo 01-06-2013 09:52 PM

We'll I started c25k i did w1d1 twice as i still don't think i'm ready to move up (I still haven't been able to run a full min with out stopping within the last 15 secs although i do run during each run interval) wish me luck.

Mara 01-06-2013 10:57 PM

I started the program, but with modifications. Having to start out a little slower. Lol

You'll get there. Just stick with it and don't rush things. At the end of July, I couldn't run a full minute either. I ran 3 miles Tues, 3 miles Thurs, 3 miles yesterday, and 7.5 miles this morning.

Disclaimer, I did run it using 5/1 intervals. I'm coming back from a 3.5 week illness break and still working back up. I'm only 7 weeks out from my half marathon, so I'm trying to be careful not to rush it. I'd rather still be running intervals than not be able to finish the half. This week I'm moving back up to 8/1 intervals.

Cemommster 01-07-2013 08:49 AM

How are we doing ladies? I can't get to running today until my hubby gets out of work, I have a sick one home today.

Ado Annie 01-07-2013 11:18 AM

I did W7D1 last night, the first time I've ever run 2 miles all in one go (I wasn't really at that pace the whole time so I had to pound it out for the last minute, but the point is that I did it!). Really good/easy run, although I think I have it to blame for why my thighs were burning so much at yoga this morning.

Congrats on starting, those of you who have! I think it's smart of all of you to do modifications where you need them, there are definitely days when I've felt like the program was pushing me too hard (but other days when it was pushing me just hard enough). I just always told myself if I couldn't complete a day it wasn't a failure -- because the point of C25K is building endurance, and even if I can't make it as far as it wants me to this time, it's helping me build up for next time.

KellinaKatrina 01-07-2013 01:31 PM

I bought the iphone app last night and am starting tonight. I'm really excited! I've been walking alot since I started in September and have slowly been able to add in running without feeling like I was dying when I stopped but am nowhere near able to run an entire 5k. I really hope the program works for me. :)

cabinwife 01-07-2013 02:21 PM

I'm new to the thread but I am a former c25k graduate! That was before the baby came so I'm just now finding time to get out and run again. It's a little discouraging having to start over but I remember how good it felt to be able to run 3 miles so I think that will keep me motivated. I've got W1D1 finished so plenty more to go but I will get there.

SDChickie 01-07-2013 03:57 PM

Wow! Great to see this thread so active!

I graduated early from the C25K program, but am still working on improving my pace. I've signed up for my first official race in March, so I guess I'll just keep plugging away until then, when it will become more real! ;)

Cemommster 01-08-2013 10:55 AM

tried to redo day 2 today, it wasn't in me. So I did intervals of just walking on the treadmill then went to the elliptical and the bike for a little bit.

cabinwife 01-08-2013 10:59 AM

SDChickie - congrats on finishing early! When I graduated over two years ago it actually took me a little longer since I had to do some weeks twice before I moved up. I'm hoping it won't take me quite as long this time but its really all about what my body is telling me!

Ado Annie 01-08-2013 01:18 PM

W7D2 this morning! I'm really proud because I hit the exact same distance (2.01 miles) as I did on Sunday, but this time I did it at my own pace. I was so sure I was gonna end up with at 1.92 or something, but nope :D

SDChickie - what are you doing to improve your pace? I haven't decided if I'm going to work on that or distance when I graduate, and I should probably start thinking about it, ack!!

Mara 01-08-2013 01:27 PM

Repeating week 1. Still with slight modifications, but still doing it. :) It is so cold though. Brrrr... Cannot wait for warmer weather.

SDChickie 01-08-2013 05:29 PM

Thanks, cabinwife. ;)

Ado Annie, I am running intervals... started with 30 seconds of increased pace, then back down to usual pace for 2 minutes, then adjusted the intervals from there. I'm now running 60 seconds at an increased pace, then going back to regular pace for 60 seconds. It's easier for me to track the speed on a treadmill, but I follow the same concept, albeit a little less scientifically, outside and am slowly improving my pace outside (in the lovely 30 degree weather!) as well.

Today is a great day to run, my fellow 3fc peeps! :D

Ado Annie 01-09-2013 07:53 PM

SDChickie, I love the idea of switching back and forth between the slow pace and a faster pace! The first time I did C25K I did it on a treadmill with a 30 minute limit, so I just figured when I graduated I'd go back and do the program over faster. This time I definitely don't want to go back to the running and then walking thing -- your way seems a lot smarter, and it never would have occurred to me. Thanks!

Cattails 01-10-2013 03:31 AM

Exactly what I was thinking! Thanks for sharing your method, SDChickie. :p

I've missed a few days of running due to a strained back, but finally got some good running shoes today(my first Saucony shoes!), hope they help. Can't wait to try 'em out tomorrow.

cabinwife 01-10-2013 12:23 PM

Well I finished week 1 last night. I'll be running w2d1 Friday night. I've been having problems with shin splints after my runs. Icing them helps but I definitely think new running shoes would help.

Cattails-hopefully your new shoes do the trick!

Cemommster 01-10-2013 03:01 PM

I need new shoes too. I think I need to rest. I feel run down and getting chest congestion. I tried to work out, but way below my mileage on elliptical and bike for the time I did.

AlmostMe 01-11-2013 11:23 AM

Hello all...I'm re-doing the c25k programme. I did it last year but then started smoking again and gained some weight back, so thought I'd do it again to build up my running strength and stamina.

I'm going through the weeks much faster this time...some weeks only running 1 of the runs before moving on to the next week. Although I'm in week 6 now which on my programme has 3 different runs - so I'm doing all of those.

I'm very slow...which I hate. So I'm trying to work in some intervals to improve my sprint time (just started rugby training and also handy for chasing after my son) and my over-all time. Once I've re-graduated I think I'm going on to a 10 K programme as I'd like to run one for my summer challenge.

SDChickie 01-12-2013 10:42 AM

You are most welcome, Ado Annie and Cattails. Hope the intervals work well for you! :D

AlmostMe, you are no longer smoking, are you? Can't even imagine still smoking and trying to improve my lung capacity to run! Also can't imagine getting excited about a 10K... 5Ks and OCRs (for which I'm registered, but have not yet run!) are enough for me, thanks! ;)
