Anyone else have this DVD?? It's amazing but killer. Tried it a few times but felt like I was going to die. New year...onward and upward. Wish me luck!
I got it for Christmas and am on Level 1 Day 4 today. Yesterday I was SUPER sore, but today I'm feeling a little better. Still sore, but better. I haven't done it yet today, but I'm planning to later this afternoon.
Okay, so I just finished my first workout. General comments:
- It was not helpful to figure out that I lost the rempote control for my DVD player during my last move. It was a challenge even getting to the workout!
- I really like the variety- I didn't notice the time going by.
- I didn't know there would be jumping jacks. I had to hold the girls for those, in the absence of an appropriate bra. Glad I was home alone in my living room!
- My big goldendoodle thought my rendition of the workout=playtime. The hand weights seemed to be toys to him, so my form suffered as I tried to keep them out of his mouth. On the plus side, I didn't need a towel, because anytime I was on the ground for floor work, he licked the sweat off my brow.
I guess it will take a few days for me to work out the kinks and for my dog to learn that hand weights are not toys!
I really like the video and am gearing up to start it again. I love that the workouts are only 20 minutes. However, I get tired of doing them every day and like to mix it up with other workouts/videos.
I bought it recently to mix into my workout routine. It definitely kept my heart rate up so I think it's a great alternative to steady-state cardio. But beside the pushups I don't think any part of the routine can be considered "strength." High reps of 1-3 lb handweights aren't going to build lean muscle and I don't even know if they're enough to be considered weight-bearing.
I think it's a good routine and I got a lot out of it. I just don't think it should take the place of proper weight-bearing activity, but used in conjunction with it.
I definitely agree that 3-5 lb may be sufficient for the amount of reps the video calls for. My point is that she shouldn't do low weights at high (25+) reps. That's not really strength training. Strength training is doing- at MOST- 12-15 reps at a much, much higher weight.
I think using small weights for high reps and going from one move to the next quickly is great, great CARDIO and good for engaging the muscle. I was sweating by the end of the video! And my muscles on my upper body were engaged and tired. But that's not what strength training is. Very low weights/high reps is not going to build lean muscle and it's not going to reap the benefits of actual weight training. Muscles can be engaged and burning (such as running for the first time in months, running up stairs, going to a spin class) but that doesn't mean you're strength training. Calling it that just is a tad misleading, IMHO.
Did my Day 4 workout last night, and it was so much easier than Day 3. FINALLY my sore muscles are subsiding, and my stamina is beginning to increase. On Day 1 I was sure I'd have to stay on Level 1 for a whole month before moving on! I still think I'll be there longer than 10 days, but it's been really encouraging to see some growth.
Also, I really do love the variety - I tend to get bored so easily and end up quitting things, but with this I know there's a quick change to something else coming soon.
indiblue I do think you're right in that it should probably be combined with separate heavier lifting.

LOL I wish I actually had a goldendoodle so I could have this problem too! Congrats on starting the Shred!!!
I actually got this DVD for Christmas 2010. I only ended up doing it once because I got lazy and completely fell off track with my weight loss. Well, I have restarted my journey and I think I am going to start doing the 30 day shred again tomorrow. I did 1.5 miles on the treadmill today which was a HUGE step in the right direction for me. I typically hate exercising and have lost all of my weight thus far without exercise. But, I just keep telling myself "imagine how much you could've lost if you were exercising too!". Getting back on track now though and definitely going to try to add the 30 day shred to my daily routine
Day 5 workout is in the books, and it is definitely getting easier. Don't get me wrong, it still whips my booty (especially the strength and cardio for circuit 1), but overall I'm feeling better. I'm so glad I pushed through the pain on Day 2/3!!
