Abs exercises post hernia surgery?

Aloha everyone! I had abdominal surgery last year for an umbilical hernia which I developed during a floor back/abs workout. ( I bust a gut "busting a gut!" LOLOLOL :D) It's now 8 months post-surgery. I'm very very anxious about working my core. My ab strength is quite poor, but I'm fed up with struggling to sit up in bed or get up off the floor.

Do you have ideas for how I can begin to strengthen my core without putting a full stress load on my belly? Are there exercises I can do that help abs as a result of the move but aren't specifically meant for abs work (yoga poses, leg lifts, band work???) Thanks from a very nervous but determined lady!

You should really seek a doctor`s advice in your case or a physical therapist. But I would think that core exercises and basic crunches would help to start you off...

Thanks, Ilene. I appreciate the core exercises slide show. A physical therapist might be a good starting point. My MD is young and fabulous and isn't very interested in my questions. Time for a new Doc!
