Default Learning to Swim..or in my case trying so hard not to drown.

When I started trying to get fit and get in shape I had a list of activities to try along the way. These were things I'd always wanted to try some since childhood....I have gone through about 1/4 of my list and I have a few things I love (Biking, Hiking, Yoga, Bellydancing) and a few I dislike (BasketBall, softball, Tennis) but one thing I have always wanted to do is to learn to Surf. It just looks like so much fun and peaceful and just plain cool...but I have a few barriers. I can't swim, I'm afraid of the water, I wear glasses and I have asthma (which is mostly why being in deep water freaks me out) regardless of all this I have managed to complete 6 weeks of swimming lessons. While I am not a strong swimmer and I usually end up dog paddling because I can't get the breathing down I am getting better. I just signed up for another set of classes with a different more uhm militant instructor...he likes working on endurance. Exhaustion! I think part of it is the way that I swim, I believe that I waste of lot of energy panicing and flailing about but I think some of it is that I am not eating what I need before hand. I usually eat breakfast at 8 and then I have a small snack and class is at 12:30 and when I am done with class I have a nice lunch usually in the park and walk. Its a great saturday but I guess its going to have to change some. What can I eat that will give me that energy but not make me feel heavy and lethargic. Also the 6 week class was once a week this class is every Saturday and then Sunday I am so afraid that is not enough recovery time for me. What can I do when I have heavy workouts back to back like that?
Thanks for any advice!

Good for you for conquering your fear of water! Swimming is my favorite exercise (although the water at the Y has FRIED MY HAIR!) As far as eating goes, I usually have something very light before swimming, like a hard boiled egg and tomato juice, or yogurt. I don't like exercising on a full stomach, or an empty stomach. Good luck to you!
