I have my first 5k on the 22nd at a park that has a ton of hills that I still can't conquer. Do y'all have any advice for me? How did you get to be able to run up hills? Just keep running?
For me, it is partially a mental challenge. It's also a question of pace. You have to slow down so that you aren't over-exerting yourself (you know, when you cant catch your breath and you feel light-headed?).
It took me a while to stop letting myself walk, and to figure out a pace that would work. Now I power up hills (and kind of like them!) It takes persistence and practice. Just keep at it, be tough on yourself (a little bit.)
Try to maintain a constant to only slightly harder EFFORT which means you may need to walk. Stand tall and look up the hill, this keeps your posture erect and helps you lift your knees. Imagine a tow rope attached to the top of the hill or to a runner in front of you and pull yourself along the tow rope. (If you watch me carefully on a steep hill my fingers will pinch closed as my arm swings forward to "grab" the rope)
