Milehigh- less water retention for sure, but more importantly, less STRESS on my Body ie; overtraing and undereating led to stress hormones (and all hormones) completely outta whack and not functioning. Now that my body isnt "stressed" it is starting to function properly...as far as hunger--interesting you said that! i am actually way MORE hungry than i used to be! Ghrenlin is one of the hormones that is completely supressed when your body is stressed, and ghrenlin is the hormone responsible for making you feel HUNGRY.... My ghrenlin levels have risen, therefore i am finally really feeling hungry !!

We all have some runs that are better than others, and can't explain why but it does sound like you were running low on fuel. So you posted your Q on Tuesday. What did you end up doing and how did it go?

I have my own question. In light of my knee pain I have been trying to run only every other day 3.5-4M three days a week and 5.5-6M one day a week. Pain seems to be getting better, which I attribute mostly to my new shoes and rolling out my IT band with a foam roller. Is it smart to stick to every other day for a while at this milesage or should I start increasing. I'd like to do a half-marathon this summer but haven't committed to anything yet.

Pam

Thank you for the advice, ladies!!

I completed my 7 miles on Tuesday and other than tripping and falling down after the first mile, it was ok. not perfect but really not that bad. I've got to plan my long runs better, though, with proper fuel and rest. I'm going to move on to 8 next week and see how that goes. my plan only takes me up to 10 miles so I've got a few weeks where I can repeat if I feel the need. I feel good about getting back into a regular running routine (3x a week) and I think increasing my base to 4 miles will help with the long runs. If I can really get that 10 mile run down, i'll feel pretty good for the HM.

Are you having ITB issues? I had to rehab my ITB last fall and basically took a week or two off form running and did cross training while rolling out my leg every night. Sounds like you are doing ok with 4x a week so give the increased mileage a shot on your long run. If it hurts more, back off. Just make sure you roll, roll, roll with the foam roller! :)

MK- I agree about backing off when your body is stressed. In January I didn't exercise a whole lot...maybe running once or twice a week and starting up a weight lifting class once a week. I managed to drop 7 lbs that month which is pretty phenonemal at this weight. Now that I've upped my training, the weight loss has slowed a bit. I'm with ya though... strength training is making me feel AWESOME about my body lately!!!

Cake & Michelle - happy to hear about your great runs, you two!! Keep up the awesome work. :D

Hello from Florida! I just skimmed through this months posts and wanted to check in. The drive down here...and the days of sitting that entailed...left me craving a run like I never though would ever happen to me! The hotel we booked for the first few days of our Florida vacation did not have an exercise room and it was not in a place that I felt safe running outside alone so I missed almost an entire week.

Since arriving in Orlando, I have had two very nice 3+ mile runs. It is unseasonably cool here (so te locals tell me) but it is a nice temp for running.

I do hope it warms up a bit before we head home though :(

Thanks for all the well wishes!

I have a 10-miler planned for tomorrow morning with a buddy of mine, I am looking forward to it. I haven't doen 10 in a while.

Momof5K - glad you were able to get some runs in. I remember thinking "I would never crave a run either" but funny how things change huh

Fats Glad you were able to move on to the next bout. You are doing great. A base of 4 miles sounds awesome that is what I use and its seems to help alot with the long runs

Milehigh I think you should just listen to your body. Stick with every other day and add in a few extras here and there to see if your knee will allow. You will definitely know

MileHighMama 02-19-2010 12:15 PM

MK: I can definitely understand how the stree hormones of undereating and overtraining can cause weight loss to stall. I think I have been there myself. Maybe being rested and less stress gives you the will power to stand up to the hunger? I now when I am overtired and overworked, I have less ability to control the urge to overeat.

Good advice to listen to my body about how fast and how far to run. Fat: I don't know if I have IT issues FOR SURE but when I went to that running clinic I told you about, the coach there said that IT issues are a common cause of knee pain. I ran 4M today and felt GREAT. Hardly any knee pain at all. I can't believe it and am so excited. Not sure if it is all the foam rolling or the new mizunos. Regardless, I will keep rolling. It hurts less than it does and I think it's because it is helping.

Yesterday I got some new socks. I've been wearing some pretty good bamboo ones that are supposed to be super absorbant but wanted to try some Dri Fit ones by Nike. Big mistake. Now I have a blister below my big toe on my left foot. These are way too thin and now I realize that they are for fitness, not running, so back to the store. Anyone have recommendations on socks? I like the kind that don't show.

Happy running everyone! I think I am going to push for 6 miles on Sunday.

Pam

I use SmartWool running socks and I love them!

Hi Ladies!

I wanted to share my run today with you because I think you'll understand how monumental this was for me! Last spring I ran Run For Reach in Ottawa, I wanted to run 5km in under 30 min. I posted 29:53. I was so excited. One of my goals this year has been to improve on that time. I wanted to run it in under 28 min.

Today I used the treadmill, set at 11km/hr and RAN 5KM IN 27 MIN!!!!! and even had energy to spare! I think I could have gone even faster!!!!

Thank you for letting me boost a bit!!!

HAPPY - You must have wings on your feet! WTG!!!!!

I got my Garmin 305 yesterday and I went out and tried it out this afternoon. 2.66 miles and it felt GREAT to be running again! I still got the stupid hip pain, however, that stopped me from going a full 5k. But other than that I felt great. I have my appointment with the orthopedics doc on Monday and I am feeling hopeful. :D

so the re-feed begins------
yesterdays calories intake- 2100
Today-- aiming for higher (closer to 2500) and my macro nutrient raios need to be at least 55%to 60% carbs (with 50% of those carbs being starches and other HIGH glycemic index foods) 25% protein and no more than 15% fat -- thats going to be hard, and i wish i had read that BEFORE i went out and bought PEANUT BUTTER and Peanut butter Granola cereals and full fat cottage cheeses and wahtnots...<SIGH> But it makes sense.....since im going to be eating in such a surplus, any extra fat will be stored AS FAT...as opposed to the carbs, which will all store as water weight.
Im up 2 pounds this am........thats funny........im ready to play the game "How much weight can a human physically GAIN in one week?!?) im off to a good start all ;)
Wish me luck

To all of you who might be wondering what im REALLY up to, and what the point of this re-feed is (and for those of you who feel you might benefit as well) im linking to a *good* article i saw on it this am..

Hey everyone... I'm back with a vengeance. I've really been in the dumps lately...and on top of that, my headphones had broke. So, I got out of the gym loop...and into misery. Then, I gained back four pounds. >.>

Anyways, I'm back. You all look fab..and hopefully I do very soon. Ugh, I was doing so well before all this. Besides that, I've gone to the gym the past two days. Today, I did 4 miles on the elliptical averaging less than 10min per mile and then .5 mile on the treadmill sprinting @7.6mph. 2010, you will not conquer me.

Since my goal is to look fab in Singapore, I got two months to get down a good weight. I'm thinking 135 should be my current goal ....and I found out that there's a full gym in the apartment style housing I'm staying in! :D Yay. I'm submitting my application for the study abroad by the end of this week, so I'm totally set on this new goal.

CakeBatter 02-22-2010 09:44 AM

SO I ran 10 miles on Saturday with a buddy. It was nice to have someone to run with. It really was. We ran a 5 mile trail loop twice. It was hilly so for me pretty challenging since I generally don't run hills. But it was a awesome workout and an overall great run. Then I ran a brisk 3 miles yesterday. I think I am resting today though.

MK -Interesting article. You are always up to something..hehe

Eve - I love my Garmin. They are so cool. I hope the doc can work everything out for you

loquacious - Don't worry that 4 pounds will be gone before you know it. WTG on your workout. And no headphones can definitey be a bugger. Maybe you could get some really cheap ones until you get the ones you want or whatever.

EveLHaelf 02-22-2010 04:02 PM

I went to my Orthopedics appointment today. When he looked at my MRI and X ray results, he said they both looked normal. So I have no idea why my original doctor said there was an extra bone??:dizzy: Anyway...after having me walk around barefoot and bending my leg every which way and pressing on the outside of my hip (it was surprisingly tender. I never noticed that before) He diagnosed me with hip bursitis. UGH! This guys is also telling me to just not run anymore. I understand that I will need to take a few months off from running to heal and recover but I don't just want to stop running and never run again! The doctor's just don't get it! When I asked how long I should take off from running he said "Definitely no running until the bursa is healed. I've found that I can get the same workout from riding a bike, so why not just do that instead of running? Some people just cant run."

He gave me a shot of cortisone (ouch) and a prescription for anti-inflammitory meds and orders not to run until it is healed. I'm not sure how long that will take, considering the only way I can tell is if it hurts when I run....grumble....

I just want to find a doc that will understand my dedication to running and help me get back to running. Instead of just saying "if it hurts to run then just don't do it!" I wonder if there are physical therapy things I can do or something?

So it's back to spinning, walking, cardio class and weight lifting. I don't mind doing all of that, I just really miss running and the whole motivation behind me losing weight is that I want to join the Air Force. How am I going to be able to do that if I can't run....

Well that's my grumblings for today. Hope everyone else is doing well! Keep up the great work ladies.

Fat Pants 02-22-2010 04:17 PM

Wow Eve, I'm very sorry to hear that! I don't believe for one second that this is the end of your running career. Maybe find a second opinion, or at the very least, a physical therapist that specializes in sports therapy. That is probably where I would start.

Check out this article on running with hip bursitis: http://www.marathon-training-schedul...n-runners.html

Do you have a foam roller? If not, that is one of the first things I would get, and start doing some in-home therapy with it. Do what you can in terms of cross training in the meantime. Spinning, weight lifting, etc. are all good ideas. Maybe once the pain goes away, you up your mileage very slowly.

When I needed to rehab my knee, I started looking into orthopedists that specialized in sports injuries. If you do a little searching in your area, you may be able to find one. They will understand your goal in terms of running and help you get to that point.

Good luck! Take out some of that frustration on the spin bike. ;)

MileHighMama 02-22-2010 04:22 PM

So sorry about your doc's appointment, EveL. Maybe you should try a sports doctor? I don't know... I would feel just like you do. So sad not to be able to run.

Cake:10M! Wow. I can't wait until I can say that.

MK: Interesting about the refeed. Have fun and please keep us posted about how the extra calories affect how you feel, your weight, etc. When can you start running again? Are you working out at all right now?

Got some new socks. Asics, performance running. They feel great, are nice and padded and kept me dry. I ran 6M yesterday which was a new high for me. I felt pretty tired all day afterwards. Hungry too! I also got a pair of Nike's that are specially designed to prevent blisters but I haven't tried them yet.

Pam
