Treadmill help

I have a question. I've been exercising for about a month. Treadmill every time and other things too. Finally I started jogging on it today. And for a 1/2 hour I jogged/ran for a few minutes at just under an 11 minute mile speed and then I would walk for a few minutes at a 20 minute mile speed. My heart rate was at absolute peak most of the whole thing. I was wondering if this is effective? I am trying to get into running a whole mile and all that, I just wanted to introduce it rather slowly.

What do you guys think??

I think it probably is, but if you mean your heart rate was as high as 220-age, I would try to keep it a little lower during your peaks. The interval running you described is the way to start it off, IMO. Suck it up for a week, and you'll start improving!

you might like the couch to 5 k plan, it will give you a plan to start running...
Hey and good for you! I hate to run! I would rather walk for 2 hours :) I do get to listen to a lot of books

Calculating your maximum heart rate based on a formula is a guess at best. How do you feel from an effort perspective? If you think you can run at the current pace comfortably and you are recovering normally from your runs, I would just keep it up. In generally, run/walk strategy is a great way to get into running. If you feel like it's too much, just increase the walking breaks or slow down the run speed.
