5K Tips
Hi everyone!
My first 5K is this Sunday! I'm so excited! But, after just 2 months of running, I'm also pretty nervous. So, those of you with 5K experience - what do I need to know? What should I bring and not bring to the race? Do and not do in the days before the race? What do you wish you had known before your first race? Thanks! |
Just go have fun! My biggest advice is to pace yourself at the beginning (don't get sucked up in the excitement and swept along at a higher pace than you usually run). Enjoy yourself, save a little something for the end when you're crossing the line.
For a 5k you don't really need any extra prep. Don't wear anything new that you haven't run-tested and don't eat or drink anything new or extra from what your regular training routine has been. Main goal should be to have a blast! You only run your first 5k ONCE, so take the time to soak it in and enjoy it! |
i have one on sunday too! good luck...if it's hot out i run with a bottle of water because i get so dehydrated that little cup they hand out doesn't cut it. I like to wear a watch so i can judge approx how long till it's over. I am always last and that's fine that's the only way i can finish so don't worry about speed. I suggest getting to the race 30-45min before race time so you can get a good feel for your surroundings. don't forget to breathe regularly, i catch myself forgetting sometimes lol

Try not to start out too fast. It's SO easy to get caught up in the excitement of the moment ... and there are speedy rabbits that will sprint way ahead, no matter how fast you run! Since this is your first race, it is automatically a PR (personal record).
I don't know whether you plan to run or run/walk or walk, but even if you plan to run the whole way, I recommend walking through the water stops. You'll get a much better drink that way and it gives your legs a break. Don't worry about your time, just enjoy it! And tell us how it goes! |
Thanks so much for all these great tips! I can't wait for Sunday!
My goal is to run the whole way, which I think will be challenging but feasible. But the world won't end if I get a stitch or have to take a breather in the middle or something. I am excited!!! |
