My "baby" tummy doesn't want to leave me!

  • Alright. If it weren't for my tummy area just below my waist, not only would I be in the next clothing size down, but it would be loose on my legs/butt. Normally when I have lost weight in the past, this has not been a problem... I was generally losing all over and fitting appropriately in different sizes as I lost. However, now that I am trying to lose after having 2 kids.. my lower tum does not want to go anywhere!!! And, my thunder thighs that normally make it an opposite issue - tight in the legs, sloppy in the waist - seem to be getting smaller more quickly.

I know you can't spot reduce an area, or tell your body where to remove the fat. I am just wondering if there is *anything* I can do about that part of my body to lose some inches there. Specific exercises for toning maybe? Does it even matter and it will come off in time? It's really annoying me right now, because except for that area, my current pants are hanging off of me and looking very sloppy. I need to go a size down, but can't do it! Argh!

Anyone else having or had this problem??

PS: I do cardio 3 days per week and just added (as of end of last week) weight lifting for strength another 3 days per week.
  • the only way to reduce tummy fat is to reduce overall body fat....sorry.....as your body fat decreases you will definitely start losing in your stomach, i PROMISE!!!!!!
  • Greatly reduce your processed carbs. Overall body fat loss will of course help.

Btw, working out is super. Just remember the old addage--that 80% is diet, 20% is exercise. For me, I would say it's 90/10.
  • I have had the same problem after having my second child (15 years after the first one, btw). In the past I always seemed to lose in my waist and face first, thighs and *** last - now I am losing in the opposite order... I just assume that it will come off eventually.
  • I have 4 kids! As a result I have the same problem...When I stand up my abs look pretty nice...But when I sit down...wow! lol...Im doing the P90X and I hope to see these abs gone...Honestly Ive ben looking at smart lipo or something...I know others who have done it and now their tummies match their upper body...Im going to do it if my stomach doesnt go down...I am a size 5 and I have muscular legs and my waist isnt big just this freaking area around my navel. ANNOYING!.....
  • Keep doing what you're doing (unless you want to add a cardio session ) and give it time! It sucks, but it WILL come off if you keep it up.
  • Don't despair, as you lose weight, you'll lose fat, just keep doing what you're doing. When you reach a plateau, and you will , add intensity in your cardio, such as hills, or jog and walk sessions...

Keep us posted on your progress ...
  • I have the same problem. I am trying to do different forms of ab exercise. I have heard the planks for abs are the best at tightening your whole girdle and that is what you want.
  • Thanks everyone - it is good to know I am not the only one! Argh.. I wish I would have lost all this excess before having kids. Still the same here - need to go down a size everywhere else, but can't. I am being patient (usually LOL!), because I know it will happen in time.

jendiet - are the planks for abs the ones where you lay on the floor and play like superman flying?

Thank you, Ilene!! I am looking through those ab exercises right now. I have a question - anyone ever bought a "captains chair" like in exercise #2 to use at home? I would love to have one of those at my beck and call! I wonder how expensive it is.

Those chairs are probably very expensive, they take up a heck of a lot of room IMHO... I just do the basic exercises that they show and it works for me... no need for any fancy apparatuses really...
  • don't forget bird dog. where you are on your hands and knees and lift up opposite arm to leg. great for the core.

Those planks really do tighten it up though. I love the superman too.
  • UGH! I have the same problem and I soooooooo hate the Plank! I can't do it for very long and I feel like middle is sinking in...It's very hard. Maybe one day it'll get easier, and maybe one day we will all lose the baby belly.
