How Many Steps in a Mile?
My goal is to walk 3 miles a week, but I'm rarely on a track that is actually one mile. I've read that one mile is roughly 2000 steps for an average person. I know the stride length affects the amount of steps per mile, but wondered your responses.
I have a step counter, so I'll wear it next time I walk a mile-long track and will post my results. Please post your results if you'd like: how many steps do you take in a mile? :) |
This is from a website called Walk4Wellness, and its the formula I have been using. I find its fairly accurate based on walking known distances and checking my pedometer.
How do I calculate my stride length? a Calculation of stride length based on height (This will provide a rough estimate) Females: Your height x .413 equals your stride length Males: Your height x .415 equals your stride length a How do I calculate how many steps are equivalent to a mile? The steps/mile calculation is based on stride length, and therefore, is also just a rough estimate. First calculate your stride length in inches as explained above. Then divide the number of inches in a mile (1 mile = 63,360 inches) by your stride length in inches. For example: A female 63 inches tall (5’3”) 63 inches X .413 = 26 inches/step (stride length) 63,360 / 26 = 2437 steps/mile Another example: A male 70 inches tall (5’10”) 70 inches X .415 = 29 inches/step (stride length) 63,360 / 29 = 2185 steps/mile |
