Fat Free Yoga
So I've been absolutely loving the yoga poses on the wii fit. I've been doing about 30 wii fit minutes of it every day for two weeks now. That's honestly the longest I've stuck with continuous exercising ever. Usually I'm one week on, a month off kinda person :P. So I've found something I love doing... but I'm way too afraid to take a class... not yet anyway. My reason is because I have the worst flexibility and I'm extremely shy. So I only want to go to a yoga class if I can actually do all of the poses, and since I can't even touch my toes, that's probably limited haha.
So I'm going to try out a yoga dvd! I found one on amazon that sounds amazing from the reviews. I was wondering if anyone's tried it out. Do you think yoga can be a good main exercise to lose weight, or is it mostly only beneficial for strength and flexibility? Lotsa questions... hahaha! |
Bear, sorry, can't answer you on yoga DVDs...I bought one, but haven't given it a try yet. I have also been doing the WII Fit Yoga poses and am hoping to get through them all and then would like to try a real class. Good luck with your DVD!

Hi wiginn! Yes I finally unlocked all of the poses a couple days ago, but I only do some of them regularly. Like if I try to do the Dance pose on the board, I will kill myself lol. So I usually do like that one and the shoulder stand without the wii and just time it myself after having watched the trainer show me how. I also have a hard time with the triangle pose :[. My body doesn't wanna stretch that way yet. I think my favorite thing about this so far is that you can tell you're improving. My balance is so much better now than when I first started, and that's only two weeks in! I'm now getting 100 scores on some of the exercises. It makes me all happy inside lol.
But I bought that dvd, so I guess we'll see how it works! I only do a little cardio outside of the yoga stuff, so I guess I'll answer all of my questions in time hehe. |
I've gone to a couple of different yoga classes and I have found that it is usually the most supportive kind of environment as far as exercise classes go. The teacher, especially if you find a basic or beginners class, will show you how to do the pose if it is difficult for you or if you can go into a deeper stretch. I am really bad at it and shy too, but I love yoga class.

I do a lot of yoga videos - mainly cardio yoga routines. I've also put together some of my own routines, though they are lower impact. I don't know if I would use yoga as my main exercise to lose weight - I use it more for flexibility and strength. I wear my HRM during the cadio yoga routines and the burn ranges from 50-150 for the 30 minute video, so I don't know if I could consistently get the level I needed to burn fat. I do know it gives me better muscle control, better balance, better flexibility, etc. I do love doing it!

Well I got my dvd on wednesday and I've used it twice so far. It's really awesome. I can feel it already, especially in my arms. The moves are just so awkward that I'm working muscles I didn't know needed to be worked haha. Like I've been jumping rope and doing squats for two weeks now, but one time of this video made my legs sore again after so long. It's encouraging. It makes me sweat too, but there's too much meditation down time that I agree I probably will not lose a ton of weight as much as straight cardio would. So I guess I'll have to continue jumping xP. But I would definitely recommend this dvd.. you can feel your whole body worked. I think I'm going to be buying two other dvds of theirs to rotate as well.
I definitely plan on taking a yoga class someday... I just wanna be able to touch my toes first haha. So maybe in the summer if I work at it enough. |
I feel the same as you and have been doing a couple different ones offered for free on the exercise on demand channel on my cable. I love it.

you should go to a class. some teachers can't touch their toes. it doesn't mean you can't do the pose!! yoga is what you can do at that point it doesn't matter if you are super flexible or not at all. its a completly non competative environment. its probably the only excersise where you don't push push push your self. its hard for us to realise that and back off because we are all so used to the no pain no gain attitute about excersise. But yoga is finding balance, a balance you can take with you after your practice ends.
I would suggest a class because you can really build off the teacher and your classmates energy. The teacher can assist you and make sure you are doing poses properly. You will get a great variety of poses and flows. last night I went to yoga and the owner of the studio was taking the class, with us. We were doing a really hard pose and I was shaking and fogetting to breath so I droped out of the pose. I peaked over to the owners mat and noticed that she was taking child pose instead of the pose we were on. Here I am pushing pushing pushing my self past where I should have and she was peacfully finding her breath in childpse. so if even the most fit, owner of the studio sometimes can't do all the poses, of course its ok for anyone to do as little or as much as they can. I always have to remind my self because I want to do every pose to the fullest but my body just can't. so long story short, you will get more and more flexible the more you do it but don't let that keep you away from a class. The most out of shape, and least flexible people who say they can't are the perfect yoga students. |
