Your funniest exercise antecdotes

So the other day I was working out at home and had my mom help me and so I was gonna have her use the resistance band that we have and wrap it around me and pull back on me as I tried to run against it. Well it was going great until the 3rd step and the resistance band snapped!!! It smacked me across my sides right under my rib cage giving me bruises and a rope-burn like injury and smack my mom on her knuckles! Obviously we were in pain but suffice it to say we had quite a chuckle once my mom numbed the pain with ice and I finished my work out (Yes, I kept going until I was done). I went and looked in mirror after that and just had to laugh because it looked like I had been physically beaten. I mean I know I have a tendency to kick my own a$$ when I work out, but this gives a whole new meaning to Jillian's term "beatings" for hard work outs!!!!

So I was thinking of the above situation so I figured I'd invite you all to come and share your funny work out stories! I'd love to hear of other people and their silliness!!!!

I wish I had one:( lol

I thought I broke a toe when I stepped on it in dance class last fall! Gracefull as an ox! Fortunately it was just badly bruised and it was well enough to dance on after a couple of days.

gymlee 01-22-2009 12:47 PM

That's a funny one bopeep. I actually broke 2 toes about 20 mins before a gymnastics meet this one time. Graceful me didn't watch where I was walking and stubbed my toes into the base that holds the chains for the uneven bars. I was like great. So you're not the only one who's done silly things when you're supposed to be graceful. I'm actually the most klutzy former gymnast ever. And to think balance beam was my best event. :lol3:

trooworld 01-22-2009 03:55 PM

Wow, being snapped with a resistance band, OUCH! That had to hurt baaaaaad. This is such a timely thread for me. Just this morning, something really funny and embarrassing happened at the gym. I was moving a bench out from under the Smith machine and when I picked it up, I farted. I had my headphones on so I have no idea exactly how loud it was. Luckily, there was only one guy near me and he had his headphones on too, so I am just telling myself that he didn't hear it. Thankfully, there was no smell.

aneleh 01-22-2009 07:48 PM

lol that's funny trooworld. I've smacked myself with a resistance band too! It was my first fitness class at a community gym and we were on our backs with the band around one foot doing a hamstring stretch. The stupid thing just rolled off the front of my foot and got me in the eyes, I was crying like a baby it hurt so much! They were all puffy for the next 2 days. It's really surprising how much force your eyes can take!:dizzy:

gymlee 01-22-2009 09:44 PM

Aneleh, yikes!!!! In the eyes???? Owwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!! At least I got hit where I'm sturdy.

Trooworld, that's pretty funny. At least it was only a fart and you didn't do something like pee or poop yourself. I'll be honest I had my share of experiences with farting and actually peeing myself a little at gymnastics because of the force of some of the landings I've had to take and just other random stuff. For example I was stretching my back out in a bridge and then I was getting ready to kick over and next thing I know in the middle of the kickover I farted and I started laughing and as I kept trying to kickover while I was laughing I farted a few more times and after about 3 times of trying to kick over I gave up and was cracking up laughing on the floor. Sooooo embarrassing though. It happens though when you move in a certain way that puts pressure on your intestines. Oh well.... :lol3:

hpnodat 01-22-2009 10:25 PM

You have no IDEA! of how this thread has made me laff! makes me feel better already!

bopeep 01-23-2009 02:12 AM

gymlee - I was never a gymnast, but I did do ballet for over 10 years. I swear I am the most klutzy former ballerina ever - we had better not ever do any routines around each other! ! I once did a turn right into a wall - I wasn't paying how much attention to how far I had travelled!

I think I'm staying away from resistance bands...

Oreinteering a few years back, I was looking at my map and tohught I saw a shortcut, it was through some dense forest but I estimated it would cute 2/3 miles off my course...

I was so busy concentrating on my map/compass while running, I wasn't really doing the required checking off the ground in front,

fell straight into a ditch, and no matter how hard I tried I could not claw my way out, I kept trying and then was spotted by a friend who help drag my sorry butt out off there.

mazza 01-23-2009 06:44 AM

Cracked my nose playing soccer....

that's not really a funny one though

trooworld 01-23-2009 09:50 AM

gymlee: haha, now I feel better that it was only one fart! That is really funny, I would probably be laughing too. I just hope I don't fart again, or if I do, nobody is around. ;)

katyp: ow! That is terrible! You are lucky your friend was around.

Once about 10 years ago, I was mountain biking with my ex-husband and he was calling me a sissy so I thought I'd show him, I went too fast and hit a ditch and crashed down on that girl bar and it hurt so bad. I kept going though, I didn't want him to know how bad it hurt. The next day, I went to the doctor because it was killing me and I found out I had broke my butt bone!

gymlee 01-23-2009 12:31 PM

hpnodat- I'm glad it's made you chuckle. I think sometimes we need threads like these to remind us that sometimes it's not all soooo serious!

bopeep- I did ballet too. I actually started in dance before I ever stepped foot in a gym though I was tumbling around the grass in the backyard since I could walk. I agree with you, it might be dangerous for us to do anything like that together :lol3:

katyp- Really?? A ditch???? Wow, that must've been kinda scary but funny at the same time. I've never done that one.

mazza- Yikes! Really?? That had to hurt! It is kinda funny though. Probably wasn't that funny when it happened to you but for those who watched it, it probably was.

trooworld- Yes you def lucked out it was only gas. haha And seriously, what is with the ditches!? haha Aren't butt bone injuries awful??? Oh man this one time I was taking this ice skating class in college I took two nasty falls on the ice right on my tushie and I swear I thought I broke my butt bone too, but luckily it was only bruised but it hurt for a month. You'd think I'd be ok since I had taken skating lessons as a kid and was actually pretty good, plus the fact that I should have the balance from being a gymnast and dancer but it didn't seem to help at all because I think I was just plain too fat to be on skates and I haven't been on a pair since out of fear of hurting my butt! Ah well, you live and you learn.... and then you get loves! haha Sorry that catch phrase for the diapers is always stuck in my head for when it comes to learning experiences :lol3:

meldogml84 01-23-2009 01:41 PM

HAHAHA!!!!!!! I was trying not to laugh to loud because I am at work and that is definately a sure indicator that your not doing what your supposed to. I will say that I have done the "farting with headphones on" thing, it's funny because you really have no idea what kind of noise it made! You instantly start looking around to see if anyone heard or had a shocked looked on their face. I am not going to lie, mine don't don't ever come out with some kind of lingering odor!~ It's horrible! Thats when you run away from what your doing and go to the other side of the gym, hoping the whole time no one walks where you just were!!! HAHAHA! Besides that though I think the biggest flop at the gym was when I miss judged how fast the tready was going, thinking I was awesome mind you, I took a wrong step and FLEW off it and into a wall. That was SUPER embarrassing. I got right up like no big deal but damn that hurt later. And no I do not wear the little clippy that makes it stop, LOL so it was definately still going.

slimmingsi 01-23-2009 02:40 PM

my spotter walked off to get a drink (training in a spare room of a house) i was benching around 250lbs and at failure was left trapped on the bench with the bar on my chest shouting for him.

FB 01-23-2009 04:53 PM

A big dude at the gym could not keep his eyes off me today when I was doing Good Mornings (you bend over). "Wow', I thought - 'I must be looking fly these days'. I was wearing a pretty low v-neck, it's progressively getting MUCH looser. My left breast was exposed. Yep, the shirt slid to one side and down. My normal bras weren't clean and I was rocking a pretty sexy leopard bra.

Yikes! I laughed it off pretty good, hiked my shirt up and winked at him. He ended up more embarrassed than me. :)

Yikes! I've seen someone do that before at the gym. It scared the crap outta me to see that. I was like "OMG are they okay???????" but still laughing under my breath because it was still kinda funny. Does that make me a bad person?? haha

Oh my gosh!!! I can't believe he left you like that! That must've been kinda scary......

awlass 01-23-2009 06:48 PM

meldogml84 - looooooool omg.. i can just picture that in my mind... hehe... sorry you got hurt, but dont you wish you had a video?? hehe

trooworld 01-23-2009 09:27 PM

gymlee: ouch, that is a good reason to not go on the ice! I am afraid to go mountain biking now, I haven't done it in years, but a lot of that is due to my weight gain and not being able to go up hills. :dizzy:

meldogm: you have ME laughing because I can totally relate to it all, that's totally how I felt. As far as the treadmill mishap, I almost had that happen the other day...I wasn't paying attention and I was at the back and felt the belt and looked and saw how far back I was and after that I stopped watching tv and looked at the timer. I can just see that happening to me. That must have hurt.

slimmingsi: that would scare the crap out of me! That's a lot of weight to have stuck on your chest.

FB: I love the way you handled that!

gymlee: no that doesn't make you a bad person, I would probably be snickering under my breath but only because I could see it happening to me too.

grneyedmustang 01-24-2009 05:07 PM

I have this "vision" that I'm running on the treadmill, step on one of my shoelaces, and fall in the gym. For that reason, I tie my shoes obsessively when I'm on the treadmill.

I'm a klutz in the gym, especially if I'm tired. I have a ton of bruises on my legs from exiting machines and hitting my legs on them.

I used to do that too. Most of the time it was because I'm really short and getting into and out of the machines are kind of precarious.

Thanks trooworld. I'm happy to know it doesn't make me a bad person :)

I'm trying to think of some other silly stories but I can't think of any right now..... ooooo I think I have one! It was this one time at gymnastics I was doing back tucks into the pit that has all the foam squares and I had a mat in there so I wasn't just flipping into the pit and getting caught (because when you land in the pit the foam makes it hard to get out!) and when I was done I was in the pit tryin to get the mat out of the pit and out of nowhere my friend comes to help me and I had that mat over my head and she comes and pulls it up onto the floor but nearly taking my head off in the process! It was kinda funny because the mat when like bump bump bump along my head because she pulled it too fast. I don't know if that's funny to read or its one of those things you just had to be there for. haha

You bet your bottom dollar it hurt! I was with my friends (soccer mates) and they didn't laugh, they were freaked out because my nose was hugely deviated and I couldnt notice it.

*Gasp* OMG thats scary! Thankfully never broke my nose- I've fractured my right foot, my right fibula (the other bone in the shin), my left ankle (bone chips), and left elbow twice (one was a radial head fracture and the other was chipped a piece of bone off in my ulna) so I can understand the pain- but thats gotta be bad. I alway hate getting knocked in the face because it hurts worse than any of the other injuries I've had except maybe when I chipped the piece of bone off my ulna. That one was the worst ever. I literally got sick from the shock my body went into after the injury and nearly passed out. It was so bad. :(

doveyheart 01-25-2009 12:20 PM

Here's one that doesn't involve injuries!

I was working out at the Y, sitting on one of the weight machines facing all the people on treadmills and bike machines and all. We were all just doing our thing when suddenly the power went out. Thankfully none of the treadmill-ers tripped or anything. Everyone just looked around like 'what now?'. I sat there, disappointed that the workout had been interrupted. Then I realized that the weight machine didn't acutally *use* electricity. So I just kind of smiled and continued with my routine as everyone else just stared at each other!

gymlee 01-25-2009 03:16 PM

Yay doveyheart!!!! No injuries!!!! Your story gave me a little chuckle so thank you. Sometimes you can forget what machines use electricity in the gym if you're so into your routine haha I wouldn't put it past myself to have done the same thing

Yeowch! Chipping an Ulna would hurt - since you use it lo lean on, like everything.

So you fractured your actual calcaneus ( ankle )? My goooooord OW.

I guess? It was like right at the base where the ankle meets the metatarsils of the foot where all the bone chips were. I couldn't tell you how I did because I actually could walk on it and do all kinds of things but it really hurt. It was killing me for 7 months (the pain started in May of 05) before they could actually find it on the x-ray. They had to take two sets of x-rays over two trips to the orthopedist. First trip was in October 05 and the second was January 06 and they finally found it the second time around. It had already healed for the most part when I found out. It was awful.

trooworld 01-27-2009 07:56 AM

I love this thread. It is so entertaining!

VermontMom 01-27-2009 08:11 AM

I had just started working out at home, with exercise videos. I hadn't really judged just *where* the ceiling fan lamp was, so the first time I did an overhead arm lift/thing, my hand knocked the globe off the ceiling fan and the globe crashed to the uncarpeted floor, shattering. BOY was I in a bad mood!! Hard enough to get me motivated to exercise, then I had to stop to clean up completely. I don't remember if I continued the workout that day or not
