w2d3 today, I can't believe I made it. I will deffinatly be doing at least one more week 2 workout before I move on. I may even repeat the week, we'll see. Keep up the great work ladies.

~betsy

Andi18 03-14-2008 07:02 PM

I've slacked off this week ladies :( I'm hoping to do W2D1 or W1D3 again as I have been sick all week long. Horrible chest congestion, coughing, ... It's starting to get better but I don't want to go to the gym and spread my germies as that is probably where I got it from in the first place. I'm going to try it tomorrow though, gonna set a reminder to go to the gym tomorrow morning to get back into this. I need to! I've got a 5k coming up in mid May!

Diva 03-14-2008 07:59 PM

Thanks Y'all. :D Hope I stay here!

Andi I hope ya feel better soon.

BernerDoc 03-14-2008 08:49 PM

I repeated W1 D3 today (Started last Saturday) and it went really well. This week has been a "figuring out how to run a decent stride on the treadmill" since I've never been a runner before. I've figured out a few things - I need a longer warmup, so I do 10 minutes instead of 5, usually at 3.5 with an incline of 4.5, then drop it down to start the intervals. I've also realized that it's easier for me to run faster than I thought I could. On Monday and Wednesday I was trying to 'run' at 5.5 and it was killing me. Today I kicked it up to either 6.0 or 6.5 and it was much, much easier (gack - did I just say running and easier in the same sentence??)

Not sure if I will start W2 on Sunday or not...but I probably will.

Amarie2pt0 03-15-2008 12:07 AM

W2D3 today - wow that was MUCH better! I'm going to keep at week 2 at least once more, but day 3 was so much easier (Oh my! Berner I think I did it too!).

The only thing I didn't love was that I ate a fairly large dinner before my run - word to the wise: don't.

How's everyone else doing?

Heffalump 03-15-2008 09:49 AM

@Me_Amarie: :D And so our mirror-experience continues! I did W2D3 yesterday and it was so, so much easier for me, too. I think I'll try to go on with week 3, though, because while the 90 sec. are still pretty challenging I started to get a little bored with the 2 min. rest period. On the other hand - I don't know if I can really run 3 min. already... guess I'll find out Monday... :)

Andi18 03-15-2008 10:13 AM

Diva, congrats on making it to Onederland!!! :bravo:

I am feeling better today. I broke my fever last night and woke up in a major sweat. I don't know which was worse, the breaking the fever or doing W2D1!!! I did it!! Woo-Hoo!! I almost had to stop during the last jogging interval though as I started to feel light headed, thankfully it was the last interval so I made it ok and was able to do a 30 minute cool down on the dreadmill ;) Yep, a full hour on the http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/7/7_5_141.gif

Anyone have a good recommendation for a Heart Rate Monitor? One that does not require the chest strap.

mothermavis 03-15-2008 01:49 PM

Andi, feel better soon. I know how you feel, I had it last weekend, then we got a major ice storm, no power for most of the weekend, altogether, not one of my best, but back on track this week except for food, not good with food....lots of food issues...

Heffalump, I actually found the outside running very enjoyable (for exercise) lots more to look at, our treadmill is in the garage so view is limited...but it snowed again last night, so today I did the last workout of week 5, a 20 minutes run with no walking on the dreadmill..boring!! But I did it. I think I need an Ipod.

Diva, woohoo on Onederland!!!!!!!!!

Amarie2pt0 03-16-2008 09:55 PM

W2D4 for me today. I'm sticking with week 2 for a while, I guess. Its getting better, but I feel like I barely catch my breath during the rest periods. So on I go. How's everyone else doing?

BernerDoc 03-17-2008 11:44 AM

W2 D1 for me today. It wasn't as horrible as I thought. :D

I think the biggest difference was that I got new shoes yesterday...ahhhhh...my feet don't hurt! Whoohoo!

Diva 03-17-2008 01:16 PM

W2D1 of the C25k on the TM + 10 more minutes
10 minutes Weight lifting-Chest & legs
5 minutes Stretching

I actually liked it. I thought I'd be dying, but it wasn't as bad as I thought. I just got a good stride going and lost myself in the music. :D

mayness 03-17-2008 04:35 PM

 I'm new to 3FC... I've been thinking about doing C25K for a while now, and now that I found these forums, it seems like a good time to start!

A quick introduction: I used to run a couple of years ago. I once ran 5 miles! I was registered for a half marathon! But I inevitably do too much too soon and hurt myself. :( My lungs and heart are ok with it, but my legs protest (loudly). I seem to think I should be able to do what I see other (thin, athletic) 23-year-olds doing, ignoring the fact that I am overweight and didn't exercise for the first 19 years of my life. But now that the snow is over and we're getting some beautiful sunny days, I'm getting the urge again.

So tonight is W1D1 for me! I'm heading out in about an hour. Which puts me only a little behind the March 1 starters. I'll definitely be checking in, and reading about your progress for inspiration!

Amarie2pt0 03-17-2008 05:37 PM

Hi Mayness - :welcome:

Please don't sweat the starting later thing - most of us are at slightly different stages, and we're glad to have you here. Good luck tonight!

Diva and Berner - wtg on week 2! I really like the music this week, makes repeating less frustrating!

mothermavis 03-18-2008 06:05 AM

I did Week 6 Day 1 yesterday. I was able to run outside, that is such a nice change when it's possible.

Heffalump 03-18-2008 07:56 AM

Welcome, mayness!

Yesterday, I took my W3D1 to the track - inspired by the sunshine and your outdoor experiences, I guess ;) - it was still pretty chilly, but a great change from the treadmill. Afterwards I took a lovely 15 minute walk in the surrounding hills.

I had no problem getting through the program, although I'm sure I ran a lot more slowly. But that's fine with me - tomorrow I'll be back on the treadmill, then I'll see about speed...

Oh, and I loved the music on the podcast this week!

Diva 03-18-2008 08:40 AM

Where is this podcast every keeps talking about?

mayness 03-18-2008 10:36 AM

I did W1D1 last night! :running:

I resisted the urge to add "just one more" running segment, which is a huge success for me. I was a terrible judge of how far I would end up going, so I ended the run/walk very far from my house! It was cold (I was a little under-dressed), so I walked it REALLY fast, which was a nice addition to my workout.

Heffalump 03-18-2008 11:08 AM

@Diva: In the ITunes store it's called "podcasts for running" - I think. You can subscribe to it for free. Here's the website, - you can download it from there too. This has really helped me a lot, and even though that kind of music is usually not my cup of tea it sure keeps me running! :)

@mayness: hey, congrats on starting and sticking to the program :D - I'm also one who is tempted to do too much, too soon!

Amarie2pt0 03-18-2008 02:53 PM

Diva - the podcast has been crucial for me! I really love the assisted prompts, which allow me to just focus on breathing and form. I bought a shuffle at Walmart (they're below $50 now!!!) that I run with!

Mayness - kudos on not doing too much on your firt day! I can't seem to figure out how to dress "right" for my runs - I'm always either too cold or too hot! Ugh.

I've got a run scheduled for this evening... My morning runs have evaporated with the time change :( I really need to get back on the clock! I'll do Week 2 one more time (mostly 'cause I haven't loaded the Wk 3 podcast yet), but may move on next time.

delurks

Hi there! Just found this thread, and I hope you don't mind me joining? This is my first week doing the C-2-5k (although I'm planning on repeating this week, I think, as a really gentle introduction) and so far I'm really pleasantly surprised by how not hellish it is!

I'm running indoors on the treadmill, because it's easier to measure time that way - and also because (1) I'm not remotely confident to be jogging my fat *** around outside right now, and (2) it is VERY BLOODY HOT INDEED right now, where I live.

However, I'm looking forward to being able to go jogging around Lumpini Park (10 min's walk from my flat) in the mornings, when it's cooler, within the next 3 months.

Diva 03-19-2008 01:22 PM

W2D2 of c25k. It was a struggle today, but I'm glad I did it.

Heffalump 03-19-2008 02:05 PM

W3D2 on the treadmill. The last 3-minute-run kicked my butt, but I made it through at 6mph for the last minute. :running:

Welcome, broadabroad - yours has got to be one of my favorite user names on 3FC! :)

BernerDoc 03-20-2008 12:57 AM

W2 D2 today...not horrible. Doing a 20 minute "warmup" on the elliptical is definitely working well for me, much, much less lactic acid issues than when I tried to just do the 5 minute warmup thing. Still loving my new shoes, too :woops:

Bless you! Good to be here! Now, the question is...will I manage to fit in my 3rd session for the week this evening, or will it end up being tomorrow? Hmm...

mothermavis 03-20-2008 06:18 AM

Tonight is going to be day 2, week 6. 2 10 minutes runs with a 3 minute walk in between. I was really nervous about running 20 minutes in a row at the end of last week, but I did it, although, I'm pretty slow.

Diva 03-20-2008 01:05 PM

WTG Mothermavis! That's awesome! I don't think speed maters at this point. I think it's about endurance. great job!!!

Today I did:

W2D3 c25k -30 min's on the TM
10 minute abs on the ball
20 minutes Arms, back, inner & outer legs w/Weights.

Total=60 minutes. :)

mayness 03-20-2008 05:59 PM

Thank you all for the warm welcome.

broadabroad, Diva, Heffalump, BernerDoc, mothermavis, anyone I missed: great job on the workouts!

I just got done with W1D2 (I ran in here to post right after I got done stretching!).

Run #6 I was heading into a strong wind... that was rough... but other than that, it didn't feel too bad, and I got to splash through puddles like a little kid. :D

I was quite sore last time, so I did a longer warm-up and cool-down and spent more time stretching today, I hope that helps.

caitbeans 03-20-2008 08:39 PM

I am back from vacation, and I started right back at week 2. I was pretty worried about it since I haven't exercised in a week, but it felt so great. I will count today as day1week2! woohoo!

It is amazing, I felt so crappy becuase I hadn't worked out while at the inlaws--today I feel SO much better!

mothermavis 03-21-2008 06:01 AM

Welcome back Caitbeans!
Welcome Mayness and Broadabroad, (I agree, makes me smile just to type the name ;))

Sounds likes everyone is doing well!

Diva-glad your foot is better and you are getting it done!

Heffalump (love than name too) Makes me Dr Seuss it all the way! You are doing awesome!

Bernerdoc, what kind of shoes did you get? I always swear I'll try something new and always end up w Nike.

I did Day 2 week 6 last night!! Next up is 25 minutes of running with no stopping!:tread:

Andi18 03-21-2008 08:10 AM

I did W2D3 last night... I am planning on repeating that today though and also plan on doing a spin class at noon.

Amarie2pt0 03-21-2008 02:25 PM

Hi all - well, I've been sick (cough!) so I have been postponing my runs a bit... I hope to do W2D5 tomorrow, although my shuffle died and cannot be resurrected (kinda irritating since I've only had it 3 weeks) so I will have to do it without the podcast.

Congrats everyone on your progress! WTG!

Andi18 03-21-2008 09:53 PM

I did W2D4 today! I also got in an hour spin class. I'm definitely in pain tonight so I can only imagine how I will be feeling tomorrow and Sunday. It always seems to feel worse 2 days later :stress: I'm excited that I was able to make it through this class, this is the first class I have taken at 24 Hour since I joined back in January. (obviously not counting the boot camps as those are not at the Y and are a lot different!)

Heffalump 03-22-2008 08:42 AM

Finished W3D3 yesterday - hard in the beginning, but got better and better! Upped the tempo to 6.5mph for the last minute of running.

Way to go, everybody! :carrot:

BernerDoc 03-22-2008 11:43 AM

W2D3 today. Whoohoo!! I must say, I am kicking my own *** ;) Lovin' the runners high...

Question for those who use FitDay, Daily Plate, etc - how do you log C25K? Thus far I've been calorie counting just using a notebook and looking stuff up but I thought I might try one of those sites.

Thanks!

mayness 03-22-2008 04:03 PM

W1D3 done! :carrot: I'm excited to move on to week 2.

BernerDoc, I've used CalorieKing (back when it was free/cheap) and SparkPeople, and those sites have multiple entries for running and walking, based on speed. They'll calculate the calories burned based on your age/weight. I'm guessing the ones you mentioned are the same. If you don't know your speed, you'll need to measure or estimate that.

I just log the running and walking as two separate entries. Alternating them might actually burn more calories (by keeping your heart rate up for a while during the walking sections) but underestimating the calories you burn is generally better than overestimating :) (within reason). So for example, week 2 workouts have 6 running segments, 90 seconds each, so that's 9 minutes of running to log. And that means that with warm-up and cool-down, you'll do at least 21 minutes of walking.

I've done it with separate entries like mayness and also just the average speed. I do my intervals right now on the treadmill so it is easy to just divide the time by the distance to figure out the average speed. It has come out about the same (within 10 calories) both ways for me on Spark.

If you are outside you can use a site like mapmywalk or mapmyrun to figure out how far you went and the time it took.

Andi18 03-23-2008 12:11 PM

Did W3D1 today! It wasn't as horrible as I thought it would be, was still bad, but was able to push through it.

broadabroad 03-24-2008 05:10 AM

Wow, you guys are thoroughly inspirational!

So I've completed week one, and now I'm starting to repeat week one - one session down, two more to go. I may even do it for a 3rd week - we'll see.

On Sunday, though, I managed to be a Total Klutz: while jogging, I knocked my (60g Video)iPod off the wee ledge on which it was sitting, and it landed on the track and went flying off behind me! And I sort of slammed the stop button reflexively, and then flung myself off the treadmill very dramatically, landing to one side of it. The lady doing weights behind me was UTTERLY bemused.

...and five minutes later, I did it again. (Although this time I just let the damn thing fall, and kept on running.)

D'oh!

So I concluded that although this iPod had been just fine for the treadmill when I was just walking briskly, I evidently needed to invest in a wee iPod shuffle for jogging purposes, and I've duly gone out and bought myself one.

Meanwhile, does anyone have good suggestions for how I can be toning up my horrifyingly flabby underarms and/or tightening my tummy? What other exercises do you good people do?
