Anyone up for a step/flight challenge?

Basically, this would just be a personal challenge but with support. We would be taking on Virtual Climbs, measuring the number of steps or flights of stairs we climb (going down stairs won't count).

For this challenge, a flight of stairs is basically 15 steps.

Virtual Climbs:
Mountains:
Slieve Donard, Northern Ireland: 5,390 steps 360 flights
Scafell Pike, England: 6,180 steps 412 flights
Mount Snowdon,Wales: 7,120 steps 475 flights
Ben Nevis, Scotland: 8,810 steps 587 flights
Mont Blanc, France: 30,420 steps 2,028 flights
Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania: 38,680 steps 2,578 flights
Mount Everest, Nepal: 58,070 steps 3,871 flight

Buildings:
Seattle Space Needle, USA: 1,164 steps 78 flights
Canary Wharf Tower,England: 1,600 steps 107 flights
Petronas Twin Towers,Malaysia: 2,860 steps 190 flights
CN Tower, Toronto, Canada: 3,500 steps 233 flights

Anyone Interested?

brittlatham 12-23-2006 04:28 PM

I think I'll take on Slieve Donard in Northern Ireland: 5,390 steps 360 flights!

jules1216 12-23-2006 05:16 PM

The stepper bothers my knee (motorcycle accident) how can I convert the number of steps to a treadmil or eliptical?

stopeating 12-23-2006 08:46 PM

I'm willing to give it a shot! Okay I don't have a stair stepper so I will be running up the stairs in my home. I'm starting out small how about the Seattle Space Needle for 78 flights. Ooh, how long do I have? I'm already out of breath. :)

Louise1013 01-04-2007 08:46 AM

I am interested in doing this... especially while I am letting my shins calm down from running. Does anyone want to do the space needle with me this week? Lets say, done by Saturday. Keeping track of your time?

stopeating 01-04-2007 07:30 PM

I'll do it. :) I'll post you on Saturday, if I can still walk! :D

Louise1013 01-04-2007 09:43 PM

Great. Just a teaser. I did 38 flights tonight in 11 minutes. But I was so tired from the pace... my arms were sweating... gross.. I love it!

stopeating 01-05-2007 06:21 PM

Oh my gosh! I'm have to do all of mine on Saturday!!! :dizzy: Eleven minutes!!!! I was thinking hours!;)

Louise1013 01-06-2007 09:57 AM

I did another 30 last night a little slower. Cool down exercise.

I will do all 78 today at one time... then post the time. Good luck!

stopeating 01-06-2007 07:24 PM

I did it!!:) I'm dying though!;) It took approximately 30 minutes (really 38 if you count my breaks) I seriously can't breathe and I just drank 3 glasses of water!:dizzy: Did you do it?

Louise1013 01-06-2007 09:17 PM

I did it too!! It took me 23 minutes... but I did it on an escalator type machine at the gym... I am certain yours was a lot harder than mine. Congratulations... I know I was sweating big time.

Up for another? Where do you live? i live in St. Louis... I don't think there are any steps in the arch.. but I will google it. Maybe the Sears tower?

JigglyBits 01-07-2007 03:19 AM

I'd like to try and climb Mont Blanc, France: (30,420 steps 2,028 flights) because I've actually 'physically' been there once back in 2005 :)

stopeating 01-07-2007 07:36 AM

I'm sore today, so it obviously did me some good!:) I live in Michigan. Can't think of any stairs here.

Jiggly Bits want to join for another one? 2,028 flights?????:faint: That is a ton.

Maybe we can build up to it? I'm willing to do what you guys are willing to do.:dizzy:

PS my 8 year old step daughter did it with me and got to 130 flights!:o Made me look bad!!:)

Louise1013 01-07-2007 08:42 AM

I will look and see about the Hancock building in Chicago... its about half way between us. Maybe some of the big places we could relay it!

I will post soon.

katyp 01-07-2007 09:36 AM

ok so i am doing Slieve Donard, Northern Ireland: basically cause i live here.....

did it today, sp proud so much so i just signed up to climb the real thing in Sept of this year for charity hahahaah

wannabsexy 01-07-2007 09:39 AM

ok. I think I would like to do this but explain a little more. Are we doing it all in one day or over several days as we pick each thing?

Louise1013 01-07-2007 12:21 PM

I just looked up the Hancock Observatory. It is 94 flights. There is even a "Hustle up the Hancock" race. I won't be able to participate... but I think climbing 94 flights is still quite a challenge. Who is with me? Finished by Wednesday? My week will be hectic... but I will fit it in.

I don't know what the original intention was... I just did all of the 78 flights in one day. It took me 23 minutes. I am planning to do all 94 flights in one sessions as well. Obviously... I wouldn't ever get to 2000 flights in one session... maybe I would break that up over a week or 2. You do what you feel comfortable with... I will warn you... It burns!

stopeating 01-07-2007 02:00 PM

Okay, I'm in for the Hancock Building! I need to pace myself, my calves are sore today!!;) I did mine all in one day, but more because I procrastinated and I had a challenge to have it done on Saturday. Challenges definitely motivate me. :)

Okay who's in for 94 flights by Wednesday?:dizzy:

stopeating 01-10-2007 07:07 PM

Okay guys this is really wimpy but to be honest my calves hurt so bad the day after the first challenge that I'm not going to finish today. I got in 30 flights so far. With my schedule it will probably be Saturday again. How are you doing?

Louise1013 01-10-2007 07:39 PM

Oh... I am so happy to hear you say that... you are 30 up on me. I went back to work this week after being off for Winter Break (I'm a teacher) and I haven't been to the gym since Sunday.

But... Saturday it is. Keep it up! You are really motivating for me.

iggystar 01-11-2007 11:48 AM

Slieve Donard, Northern Ireland: 5,390 steps 360 flights

I'm climbing a virtual mountain, but it's not going to be in a day, or two. My work floor it on 12 so I'll be done by the end of the month...that's 30 trips up and that's plenty!

stopeating 01-14-2007 06:39 AM

I did it! I got 97 flights done last night. I paced it out through out the day so it would not be as painful as the last challenge. :) How are you doing Louise1013?

Iggystar - 360 flights!? Wow! The stairs I'm running our 13 so I have to convert to figure out 15 steps per flight. I wish I had more stairs, but I don't know about 12 flights!;)

How about the Petronas Twin Tower 190 flights by next Saturday?

NESunshine 01-14-2007 11:10 AM

Hi Everyone! I was hoping I could join your challenge... I just got over my fear of the Stairmill yesterday at the gym and did 40 flights in about 15 minutes....that was probably the hardest 15 minutes of exercise I've done in a while! I'm an elliptical frequenter so I thought it was time to mix it up a bit. Jigglybits I'm gonna join you for Mont Blanc too....since I was also there back in 2002. I figure if I can climb up and over and down and Alp in one day (about 9 or 10 hours straight) then if I get to the gym every day I can try to do this one in about 2 weeks.
Good luck everyone!

stopeating 01-14-2007 11:56 AM

Good Luck NeSunshine!:)

NESunshine 01-14-2007 02:09 PM

Alright...just so I can keep track since I just got home from the gym... I started with the stairs today and got 55 flights so I'm at 90 flights total. I followed up with an hour on the elliptical....man I'm pooped.. I might have to take a rainy Sunday afternoon nap!
Thanks for the luck!:D

stopeating 01-14-2007 08:47 PM

Okay I got 25 flights toward Saturday's challenge already!:carrot: Week days are always the hardest though. NeSunshine great job!!!:)

Louise where are you??:) I know you can do it!;)

NESunshine 01-15-2007 02:53 PM

Alright I did another 40 flights today which puts me at 130 flights. This means I've completed the Seattle Space Needle & The Canary Wharf Tower....long way to go before I hit Mont Blanc though!

stopeating 01-15-2007 08:46 PM

Go NeSunshine!!!:carrot: :carrot: :carrot:

Louise1013 01-16-2007 09:31 PM

Hi chicks... I have been without power for 4 days. I am just now getting it back tonight. I am up to 48 from last week. I will try and finish both by Saturday so I am not behind.

Thanks for thinking of me. And... Awesome job! That is so great that you all want to do this... it is such a workout. I just need to thaw a bit before getting back. It was 40 degrees in my house today. Brrr!

stopeating 01-17-2007 07:50 PM

Louise1013 - So sorry about the heat! We have 10 degree weather and I can imagine what would happen if we lost power!

I still only have my 25 flights toward the next challenge. It's been a busy week so I know you are catching up! :)

Try and thaw out. ;)

Louise1013 01-21-2007 09:36 AM

Well... I am a week late, but I completed the hancock tower... and did another 40 flights. My lower half hurts so bad, but I will try and stretch extra today to put in some more. I doubt I will get to 150 by the end of today... but maybe another 50. Keep it up.

stopeating 01-21-2007 07:00 PM

Jamie you are not going to believe it but I got in only 40 flights! :) I've been so busy. Let's try to finish the rest by next Saturday?

Ann

NESunshine 01-22-2007 04:08 PM

I just wanted to check in and see how my fellow climbers were doing! I've been down for the count with the flu so I haven't been to the gym in about a week. I'm going to go tonight but I'm starting small since I'm not 100% better yet. Hopefully I'll be back to climbing by the end of the week.
Glad to see everyone is climbing away!

stopeating 01-22-2007 05:36 PM

NeSunshine - Sorry to see your not feeling well. Don't push yourself too much. :)

NESunshine 01-24-2007 09:20 PM

Alright I'm back in the saddle... I got 32 flights done tonight which brings me to a total of 162

stopeating 01-25-2007 07:50 PM

Wow nesunshine!!:carrot: :carrot: I am only up to 90 flights. Redoing hardwood floors in my son's room, but I will try to get some more done tonight!

NESunshine 01-26-2007 10:16 AM

Woot woot... well I've been going to the gym pretty much every night after work so I make sure that I hop on and do about 10-20 minutes on the stairs every night to get them in :)
Last night I did 10 minutes for a total of 26 flights so I'm up to 188 total.

NESunshine 01-28-2007 02:30 PM

42 more today so I'm up to 230

stopeating 01-28-2007 09:08 PM

Nesunshine I'm embarassed because I really did not work on it this weekend. My son had a b-ball tournament and its been go, go, go. I'm way behind!:o
