EA Sports Active for Wii

Is anyone else getting this program? I have preordered it and am so excited to get going. I've been working out sometimes with a trainer now for a few months but need more structure at more time at home. Anyone have any thoughts on this product?

Misora 05-14-2009 03:08 PM

I am but I don't have a wii fit so I hope that I still get some good use out of it. It says compatable not required. :P

canadianangel 05-14-2009 03:41 PM

i was looking at a ad for it, but not completely sure what its about

Looks like fun. I did see Allyson Sweeny on Ellen and she loves it. Not cheap but might be worth it....will wait though since I start boot camp soon, might not need it.

Hlthgrl 05-15-2009 10:01 AM

I was doing a boot camp (might join one starting in a week to get a bit more of a boost). I have most recently been working out with a trainer but realize I can't afford that forever. I need something I can do at home. I found the price of the EA Sports Active to be not too bad. It was $69.99 (I'm in Canada). I do have a Wii fit but I know you can use it without it as well. In fact I might not even bother using the board with it. Compared to what I have been spending on a trainer I thought it was a steal :) I'll keep you posted on how it goes. Next Tuesday can't come quick enough!

Lissus 05-20-2009 03:37 AM

I had this posted in a different thread, so here's my review again :) Hope it helps

Well, I just finished my workout on the EA Active.

Here's my review

First.. the "extra" equipment that comes with it.
The band feels pretty flimsy, but the handles are removable, so I may use my own exercise bands with it.
The strap that holds the nunchuk seems like a pretty ingenious idea, but with all the moving around (especially the running) I had the stupid thing fall down my leg probably 5-6 times during the work out, finally ended up ripping the thing off and holding the 'chuck in my hand to finish my laps.
When I tightened it enough to keep it in place I almost felt like I was cutting off circulation a bit. Just not very comfortable. I'll have to play around with it a bit and see if maybe I just didn't have it in the right spot.

Now, onto the good stuff.

I did like the workout. It's definitely not as much fun as the WiiFit. There's no cutesy little voice "ohhhh"ing at you, or fun little games that I've found. This is pretty cut and dried try to repilcatate a personal trainer in your house approach.

I like the menu's. Lot's of options for setting your own goals, programming your own personal workouts (for solo or with a partner), changing music styles, and adding additional exercise (including housework).

A few of the exercises didn't seem to mimic my movements as well as others, but as it was my first time trying it I'm not going to blame it entirely on the software until I've given it a few go's.

My favorite again... the boxing. I'm debating between My Fitnesss Coach and the Gold's Gym for my next purchase. I may have to rent them both first though. I'd like more boxing, but also more yoga since I didn't see anything of that variety in the menus for EA sports active.

Oh well, that's a decision for a different day. I'm off to the showers

I really recommend Gold's Gym!! It is a killer workout! My Fitness Coach is good for the yoga & what not, but if you want a killer workout that will have you sweating, I'd get Gold's Gym.

I'll probably get Gold's Gym then, since I do have a bunch of yoga/pilates/bellydance videos that I need to break back out when I can't get my Wii time in (roomates are starting to get into the WiiFit too now. LOL)

Ohhhh, can you fight two player in Gold's Gym? :boxing:

momof5k 05-22-2009 01:32 AM

I preordered the EA Sports Active too but it hasn't arrived yet. I would love to hear more reviews and will post mine when it comes.

Lissus 05-22-2009 06:30 PM

I'm working the 30 day program on EA Sports Active, though I took today off for TOM reasons and just did some yoga stretches instead. Will definitely be posting on new activites as I open them up.

Also.. Got the leg band to stay put yesterday without a problem. I definitely was wearing it too low.

Anyone on day 4 already? Wondering what's in store for me tomorrow.

Now.. anyone got a spare Midol? :headache:

Hlthgrl 05-24-2009 07:17 AM

The first time I used it I had problems iwth the leg strap. I moved it up quite high on my thigh and haven't had any issues with it since then. And I do strap it on tightly.

My workout started with a walk/ run which really did get me warmed up. then I was doing upper body exericses. While doing them I was thinking "Oh no, more money wasted. This is not working. It feels too easy then the lower body exercises started and I felt the burn!

The only real complaint I have is that the resistance band is flimsy but as previously mentioned I'll just use a stronger band that I already have. I had trouble getting the remote to pick up when I had lowered my arms back to the sides in one exercise but come to find out it was my fault since I wasn't pointing the remote down to signal I was done that movement. It pays to watch the videos for each exercise I guess :)

What I do like...it's a real workout. I have Wii Fit and I like it but my complaint has always been doing an exercise and stopped to select another. I will still use the Wii Fit for yoga and balance games (which i love) but as far as my main workouts...EA Sports Active wil be it. I also like that it tells you if yopu are not squatting far enough or holding a movement long enough.

I have only been doing random workouts so far to try it out but will be starting my 30 day challenge tomorrow. I was going to sign up for another boot camp at the gym but I dont' think I have to now.

Oh another thing that was fun to do was the workout with a friend feature. My husband and I and my sister-in-law and I tried it and it's so much fun with someone else.

Lissus 05-25-2009 12:54 AM

Just in case anyone's interested, vertigoskyy posted a video game challenge in another thread in case anyone wants in ;)

Hlthgrl 05-25-2009 05:47 AM

Just what I was looking for. Thanks for posting that Lissus.

Momofsteel 05-25-2009 07:58 AM

I am doing the 30 day challenge. I liked the fact that it moved my off day when I was too tired from yard work to complete the exercises.

I also had issue with the leg band - I had it too high and would have to sit on the floor for my squats! I hurt all over as well.

I took a tumble off my bike yesterday but will push on and do the challenge later after some tylenol. I need to get back some of my coordination!

You're very welcome

dkneec19 05-25-2009 05:25 PM

I just got this today!! It totally kicked my butt... I set the level to intermediate, and decided to just leave the 30day goal thing how it was set ( next month I'll up it!!) I agree with most of the pros and cons so far. I realized too, that I had to wear the leg band high up on my thigh. Also, the type of material in my workout pants mattered a HUGE deal. Started with windpant material, ended with shorts and the strap on my skin.

The rollerblading was brutal for me, as was the running. Overall I like it!! I like the goals, I like the trophies. The sports drills are pretty cool.

Best part: Don't need the expensive balance board!! :) I will definitely be joining the challenge!!

Hlthgrl 05-25-2009 09:08 PM

I struggle with the rollerblading too. The first time I tried it I did 2 tricks (not sure how) and now I can't get any. And my quads are killing me from squatting to get the speed up then jumping. but, I like a challenge so I amdetermined to figure the tricks out! My pants are a kind of slippery material for the band as well. I'll try shorts tomorrow.

melwolfe 05-25-2009 11:02 PM

I love this game! I started the 30 day challenge but have been gone since Friday night so not sure what will happen tomorrow when I try to use it again...........

I love that exercise is now a game. That's really the push I needed to get off my butt and get moving again. I'm a videogame-a-holic. I get so excited opening up new items and getting little pixel trophies, and when I finally win this game, it's going to be a lot more rewarding than beating Zelda or Mario!

momof5k 05-26-2009 01:24 AM

Mine just arrived and I will be pulling it out tomorrow (it is after midnight now and I am worried that starting now will not let me sleep tonight!)

I can't wait to see how it works for me! I have been using Wii Fit for some time (you know...off and on :dizzy:) and hope to add this to the mix (I don't think I want to completely give up the yoga!)

Hlthgrl 05-26-2009 05:06 PM

Does anyone know if the rest days on the 30 Day Challenge are firm or can I change them to better work with my schedule?

Lissus 05-26-2009 07:40 PM

Your question got me curious, so I just went to play with the menu's a bit. It doesn't look like there's a way to change it manually. But it seems to adjust if you create your own rest day (by not "playing"). I just missed two days due to pain, and it marked those down as rest, put me on the day 4 workout, and set up rest days for the remainder of the challenge.

I didn't pay a lot of attention to what the rest days were originally though. I'll keep my eyes out for it now though, and maybe even read the manual :^:

Hlthgrl 05-27-2009 10:20 AM

That's good to know. I'm a stickler for a schedule but there's one day coming up that is goig to be crazy busy. I will likely find time to do it but in case I don't at least now I know what the game will do. I am bad for not reading manuals or doing tutorials. I really should read through it too I suppose.

momof5k 05-27-2009 02:15 PM

Oy my aching legs! Those squats and lunges and calf squat were killers yesterday. I didn't feel it too much while I was doing it but this morning...OY!

Not sure about what will happen today :)

Lissus 05-27-2009 03:44 PM

I hear ya there. My thighs are definitely feeling it. Those lunges with kick ups were rough.. UGH.. and I'm only on easy. I really am out of shape :(

momof5k 06-02-2009 01:14 AM

Anyone doing the 30 day challenge?

Lissus 06-02-2009 02:04 PM

Momof5k... there's a few of us doing the challenge in another thread

http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=172469

hope you can join us over there :D

gigglegirl 06-07-2009 09:58 AM

eeek I am ready to kill the person who invented lunge jumps and squat jumps (lol not really) but those are killer and make my legs turn to jelly!!

i love this game though, down 5lbs in two weeks!

momof5k 06-07-2009 10:40 AM

Oh yeah...those were rough. I did those yesterday too.

I love this game too!

I know how you feel. I did a lot of leg work yesterday and I'm still feeling it today.

KforKitty 07-23-2009 06:57 AM

Just sneaking into this exercise thread if I may. I've had EA Sports Active for 3 days now. It definitely kicks butt compared to Wii Fit and the squat holds are a killer (managed full 30 seconds day 2 but yesterday I was so sore I had to stop 3 or 4 times).

Anyhow, whilst I'm liking the format I'm having difficulty with some, but not all, of the band exercises. I played and played the video but can't see where I'm going wrong. I've tried repositioning the nunchuck and wiimote, standing closer to the TV, further away, moved the sensor bar but I still can't get the thing to pick up my movements. Anyone else have this and solved the problem or am I just going to have to skip certain exercises?

Took me about a week to really get the right way to hold the 'mote, I was so frustrated I wanted to throw the foolish thing. What I started doing (and seems to be working) is puttng the "face" of the wiimote right against my palm (so the buttons are in the crook of your hand) just rotate it a bit from the way it feels comfortable (with your thumb on the button) and rotate it in more.

I know this sounds confusing, I should just post a picture, but as soon as I shifted the wiimote and nunchuck "in" more, all the exercises started registering normally.

Hope this helps.

Minya 07-25-2009 07:07 AM

there was a new piece released in gamestop stores that you can attach to the remote to help with sensing. It is called the Wii Motion Plus, please see article for more :) or type wii motion plus in google if the address doesn't work.

http://www.nintendo.com/whatsnew/det...JAKWhEO9zBvyPH

It came out with the Tiger Woods game this month and now it's sold separately.

LeslieB 07-28-2009 08:34 PM

Just an FYI - the motionplus is not compatible with Wii Active. Hopefully that will change as the response time is the only thing about the game that is a pain in the butt. Well, some of the exercises are too but not in the same way.

Lissus 07-29-2009 12:20 AM

I have 2 of the motion plus's, since we just picked up the Wii Sports Resort.

I hope they make an upgrade so it's compatible with Active, thats the only thing that still irks me about it, it's lack of motion sensitivity.

KforKitty 07-29-2009 04:55 AM

Thanks Lissus. I'm still not getting it on some of the exercises with the band. Seems to be those when you start off with your hands lower down - the bent over rows, alternate bicept curls etc. are just not happening. Normal rows and shoulder presses I can do fine. Its odd.

If you haven't already bought the Gold's Gym or the Fitness Coach, the Gold's Gym Cardio Workout focuses mainly on boxing. It does offer abdominal, leg, and back workouts also. I think the Cardio Workout is a lot more fun than the Personal Trainer. I just can't seem to get past all of the talking on the Personal Trainer. Hope this is useful.

hcl777 09-02-2009 09:43 AM

Strange...I actually haven't had any problems with the MotionPlus and EA Sports Active. The game doesn't recognize the enhanced sensitivity, of course, but the workouts all seem fine to me...

BTW, this site gives a rundown of different games that can be used for exercising on the Wii (it's got some good information on Nutrisystem too).

http://www.nutwiisystem.com/best-wii...ise-games.html

There's always debate of whether to go with EA Sports Active or Wii Fit or Gold's Gym Cardio or whatnot. To be honest, I started out with Wii Fit and got bored with it, moved on to Gold's Gym Cardio and got bored of that...today, I have all of them and mix them up :) EA Sports Active is best for a good old-fashioned cardio full-body workout, Wii Fit is good for those days when you want to unwind, and Gold's Gym Cardio is the best for upper body workout.
