L-tyrosine

  • L-tyrosine is an amino acid that's supposed to make the metabolism faster. The thyroid hormones triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) in the colloid of the thyroid are derived from tyrosine. So if I took tyrosine pills, do you think it would help my slow metabolism to get faster? Has anyone tried it?
  • It's hard to know what supplements will help which individual. No medicines/supplements help 100% of the people 100% of the time. It might help and it might not. I would say if you want to try it though......do it under the supervision of a Naturopath. They may think it's a great thing for you to try or they may be aware of a contraindication to using it that you aren't. Supplements can be as dangerous as medications - please consult someone.

  • Do you have a thyroid problem? Have you had your T3, T4 levles and a TSH checked?
I have a suspicion that if this did work for speeding up metabolism, then you would hear about it in the news and alot of people would be taking it.
As Laura NS said, some supplements can be dangerous. Proceed with caution.

  • I think I may have a thyroid problem. But I don't really know what doctor I shoulf go to to get it checked.

Really important not to try and self diagnose. You could ask your GP to do a few general tests then refer you to a specialist if you need one. I've always been a fan of vitamins and supplements but I'm leery of some amino acids and enzymes simply because if you try taking them on your own you could end up masking symptoms of a medical problem and end up doing more harm than good.

Something I've recently learned is that deriving as many of your vitamins and nutrients as possible from good, clean foods and getting in some exercise is sooo much better for your metabolism than any supplement on the market (and cheaper too ).
  • Well said, yoyo
  • You really don't want to be messing around with your thyroid levels without a proper diagnosis. Too much thyroxine will make you ill as will too little.

If you have symptoms of an underactive thryroid, see your primary care physician in the first instance. A simple blood test can check your levels.

  • I would be very careful in taking new supplements if you think that you may have a thyroid disorder. You can go to your primary physician and get your blood work done to check and see what your levels are. If you have normal levels I'd start on a thermogenic to help speed up your metabolic rate. However, if your counts are high I would ask him/her to refer you to an endocronologist in your area so that you can get the best help possible. Hope this helps!
  • I don't really have a primary physician. I never go to the doctor.. I have no idea what doctor to go to or who to call.
  • Do you have health insurance?
  • have it checked before you start. i take 4 pills a day but i am hypo T.
  • I have researched this stuff a LOT and feel confident in what I'm about to say.
I think two things that are safe to take that will help speed up the metabolism slightly are: green tea (be very careful not to take in too much sugar) and cinnamon. You can get the cinnamon in capsules as well as the green tea...but you could also just make a decion to make yourself one green tea per day and put a little cinnamon in your cereal or coffee. Another one (might want to double check with your doc) is Chromium Piccolate...200mg. is probably a low and safe dosage for almost everyone. This helps with blood sugar regularity and is also said to be safe. A really good pharmacist might also be able to give advice and this would be free of charge. If you have ANY suspicions that your thyroid is out of whack...get to a doctor and pronto 'cause this will mess you up. But small amounts of the supplements I mentioned above should be fine for everyone (and helpful).
  • An endocrinogist is the doctor who deals with the metabolism and glands. They treat diabetics.
Re : tyrosine. May help, may not, don't expect miracles even if it did help a bit.
Be careful when playing around with your glands.
    Be well.
