What Exercises Can I do with Knee Immobility?

Hello Everyone!

My knees are shot from arthritis and of course being 100 pounds overweight has not helped.

My right knee is completely immobile and the ortho guy says I have no cartilage left in either knee.

I HAVE to get this weight off - what exercises could anyone recommend??

Thanks!

You can do all sorts of weight training while seated. You can use resistance bands or light weights to start with.

For cardiovascular exercise, you could try swimming if you have access to a pool. If you belong to a ymca or other health club with a pool, there are often classes specifically for people with arthritis.

Some gyms have "hand bicycles" that you pedal with your arms to raise your heartrate.

There are "chair aerobics" classes in some places. Here's an article about one I found on the net for you. Maybe you could find something similar near where you live. http://www.thevillager.com/vil_93/getonyourbutt.html

If you are interested in a video, check the "Sit and be Fit" series, there is one specifically designed for arthritis. http://www.collagevideo.com/cart/default.aspx

THANKS, MEL!!! :thanks:

I wouldn't have thought of any of this! My knees just became worse the last few months and I had no clue what to do!

I appreciate your help!

Have a GREAT day!

hey mom2fivesweeties- I too have been in a rut this summer due to a knee injury that will not be getting better any time soon, but there are plenty of exercises you can do like pilates and yoga and I have been duing the exercise bike (my gym has the lower ones so there is less impact on the knees) I've also found that 20 mins on the eliptical doesn't hurt the knee too bad and still works up a sweat ;) good luck!
