New Here!
Hi All! I'm Kerry and I'm new here. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism 6 years ago, and gained nearly 60 lbs in two years because of it. Since then, I have had two beautiful little girls. I am at my non pregnant largest - 188. I have tried Atkins at the encouragement of both my OB and my Endocrinologist, but found it too restrictive. My husband and I have just started The Abs Diet, and so far it's wonderful.
Has anyone else tried this POE? I'm pretty excited about it - it seems like it takes the best parts of all the most popular "diets" and incorporates them into a plan that allows a wide variety of foods. THe book comes complete with menus, recipes, workout regimens so that you don't have to do much thinking on your own. Okay, I have rambled now. Just wanted to say hello, and that I look forward to the comeraderie that I hope to find here! kerry |
Kerry again welcome!!
My endocrinologist has recommended the south beach diet to me, I think that it is important for people with thyroid disorders to definately watch the carbs that meaning, eating Good carbs vs. bad carbs. I don't count my carbs but I eat whole grain bread and very little sugar and juice I do however eat whole fruit and tons of vegetables and I've switched from meat products to vegetarian meat substitutes which are suprisingly good but may be easier for me to stomach since I grew up a vegan lol. As you probably know that it is also very important for those of us with thyroid disorders to exercise as weight loss can be painfully slow!! I'm sure you will love it here and find the support that you need :) I know I have!! I look forward to talking with you!! Michelle |
Guess I didn't tell much :)
I said that I was hypo, but I forgot to tell anything else!
I was diagnosed as hypothyroid 6 years ago after having 2 miscarriages and trying to commit ssuicide (hypo can cause some serious problems....). Going back over blood work from years past, it was found that I had been hypo for a number of years already, and no one cared to diagnose it. I was diagnosed by a wonderful OB/GYN who started me on synthroid and then sent me to an internist. We did the synthroid with blood work every few weeks, noticing that I just wasn't responding to it.I had one miscarriage after starting Synthroid, and the weight continued to increase. I was 110 when I met my husband, right before all of this started, and by the time our 1 year anniversary of dating rolled around, I had gained 50 pounds. So, I was switched to Levoxyl, and things started to level out. I couldn't lose the weight, though, no matter what I did. Diet, exercise, it didn't matter. Then I got pregnant with my first daughter, Aliceon. When I delivered her on March 25, 2001, I was 200 lbs - the highest I had ever been. After I delivered, I breastfed, hoping that would help me lose weight. I got down to 165, but that was as low as it got. My TSH was off again, and it took me awhile to get it straight. We started ttc our second, and I had another m/c. After 6 months of Clomid and Progesterone and another 20lbs of weight gain, I got pg with Heather. I only gained 10lbs with her, but she was small - 5lb 15oz. I delievered her weighing 200, too. Since then, I got down to 178, but that's the lowest I can get, it seems. I'm on 137mcg levoxyl right now, and have done Atkins and LA Weightloss (big rip off!) and am now starting the Abs Diet. Maybe with a great support group, I can finally begin to lose. I'm tired of crying when I get dressed or look in the mirror.... k |
