Default Not Quite Hypothyroid

Hi all,

I read the Hypothyroid posts and want to know whether you have to take medication or if the diet changes were enough.

I have been using the GI Plan for 6 months.. I go to the gym and have only lost 15 pounds. I introduced other friends to the plan and they have lost over 30 pounds, average about 10 a month. I was so down. M GP says I am borderline and that there was nothing I could do, he would monitor it in a year's time.

So I did the Search thing and consulted my vitamin books. LO and behold! a B100 regime, 1000mg of Vitamin C, and iodine rich foods and enough zinc should help.

It also explain the depressive behavious I have had lately along with the difficulty with my weight.

Has these things helped anyone else?

You have to be on medication for life. Once your thyroid goes, it does not get better. What you eat can have a direct effect. Exercise is the best thing you can do for it. Just what are you numbers? The definition of hypothyroid changed last year and many more are being diagnosed. It's difficult to tell you what might help without more info.

I was diagnosed in 1999. I will be on medication the rest of my life. I take synthroid, I also take Paxil for depression, I have high blood pressure and high cholestorol. I "try" to stay on W.W as much as possible. I do slip sometimes. I never loose more than a pound per week (that's cutting my points wayyyyyy down) I also walk at least a mile every day. I climb stairs 3 times a week at school for 20-30 min. I also do my cardioglide. I'm 55 and quit smoking 5 years ago. I know I'm very overweight but, I feel pretty good. So it balances out. I'm determined to loose 60lbs but, no time limit.

Hi

My name is ceejay and I also have a hypothroid condition. My doctor has increased my Synthroid to .15 mg. He's going to monitor it for 2 months to see how I do.

Susan--I'm impressed with the amount of weight you have lossed. Any suggestions?
The doctor say's that I can start the South beach diet but to limit starches to just 1 per day.

Petunia--I'm 53 and have 50-60 pounds to lose.

I suffer from hypothryroidism also but hope to be getting off my medications very soon. I have heard of many people who suffered from hypothyroid, were on medication, and after changing to a raw food diet, were able to get off of the medication because their thyroid had begun functioning properly again. I also take herbal bitters and there is a mineral called L-Tyrosine which aids thyroid function. I am currently only about 60% raw but am working to be at least 75% raw food only. It is amazing that this has also almost completely eliminated my Fibroymalgia. Best wishes on getting it under control before it is too late!!!

HI to CeeJay and all who have posted to me.

I was following the GI Diet plan, which matches protein and carbs together...4oz protein and 1/2 cup of cooked rice or pasta or 1 slice multigrain bread. and as much green light veggies and fruit as you like {there is a website: www.gidiet.com that lists the program} I found that I was doing better while I was going to the gym. When I caught a cold, my weight loss stopping too....

It must be the low metobolism that they say is caused by the hypothyroidism.

My Boyfriend had poo-pooed the idea that Hypothroid was a culprit until I got sick....most people lose weight, I usually gain!

Apparently stress and tension aggravates the hypothyroidism too, so I am looking at meditation to see if that helps.

I have asked my doctor abot thyrosine...I can get it OTC here at the health food store... but he hasn't gotten back to me...of course this is the same man that said that I didn't have to do anything about it until I do in for my annual checkup next year...as if I would let something this important sllide!

You should have your thyroid checked more than once a year!

I lost all that weight on the original WW program which was 3 fruit and 2 bread, 10 protein, 2 milk and 1 limited (high carb) vegetable and unlimited other veggies. There was no cereal, potatoes, noodles or pasta allowed. There weren't any diet products to speak of in the early 70's. I still follow a modified version of this. My nutritionist told me to stay with lower carbs for my thyroid. It does work for me. When I eat a lot of carbs I bloat up like a helium ballon and feel terrible.

I talked to my doctor today about using thyrosense, with tyrosine in an otc dose, and he basically said that there was scientific basis for taking this supplement, or upping my vitamins to include 1000mg of C and a Bcomplex100, along with eating more shellfish/seagoing fish for extra iodine.

I am beginning to think that I am the only one who is concerned.

I will cut further back on my carbs.... I do notice that I bloat up badly, especially if they are white, rather than multi-grain... but, man, I LOVE my carbs...that has been the hardest part.....

Here I can book in for testing at any time, but, I am going to monitor my carbs more closely, I eat a toast, or cereal, then a carb for lunch and another one or two for supper, before I go to the gym...

I take .125 mcg of Levoxyl for my hypothyroid. Diet changes werenot enough in my case. I was worried that I wouldn't lose pregnancy weight after recently but it all came off. Now I have to see about getting to a healthier weight since I was overweight to start with. I get my thyroid checked every 3 mos.
