May Thyroid Thread

Okay, I'm new here  and may be overstepping the bounds, but I really learned a lot from the previous month's Thyroid Threads and May is conspicuously missing, so I'm adding it.

I could use a buddy with similar issues to my own. I'm 40, Hypothyroid and need to loose 45 lbs. I joined 3FC yesterday with the hope that I will find the support to make this weight loss happen. If you're like me, you know how hard it is to maintain, let alone loose, with Thyroid issues.

I followed Atkins for about 6 months. I didn't loose anything, but didn't gain either...I guess that's a victory. I've switched to Sugar Busters, 'cause I really missed fruits and whole grains.

Anyway, anybody out there...come be my buddy, we can switch threads if that's appropriate...but I could really use some support. I'm ready to get a handle on this thing. :grouphug:

Hi, Fel. I'm with you on this trip. (Just don't check regularly, hence long delay in getting a reply off.) Also hypo. Have lost 40 over the past year (only diagnosed in Sept 2002. Lots left to go but I'm concentrating on exercising (two artificial knees), water and generally eating as healthy as I can. That does not preclude things like sweets occasionally because the occasional treat keeps me on track. When I tried with stringency, I didn't stay on track too long.

Anyway, DH was tested for thyroid earlier this week and right now he's in having another test done as it came back "somewhat abnormal". Hmm. Togetherness isn't always a good thing.

Keep up the good fight and I'll try to check back in a bit sooner next time. I've learned a lot from previous thyroid threads as well. SHOULD go back sometime and read all of them. Will put that on my list of SHOULDS.

Hi there.....I am not hypothyroid....but had cancer of the thyroid. 8 years ago I had the thyroid gland removed....once a year I go for the THS blood test & am on Synthroid for life.

I have struggled with my weight for a long time....still hanging in there.

Diagnosed with Hypothryoidism

I was told for many years that my thyroid was normal. I knew that was not the case! I did my research a few months ago and found a list of symptoms because deep down I felt something was not right , losing weight was a struggle, insomnia, hair loss etc. So i did my research on the internet and found a list of the best Thyroid Dr's listed by state. I made an appointment and had the necessary tests and guess what? I WAS RIGHT!! MY THRYOID WAS VERY LOW, IN FACT THE DR. MADE A JOKE AND SAID "IT WAS ASLEEP"..HEHEHE..Never give up and always get a second or even a third opinion if you know something isn't right. The Drug my Dr. chose for me is Armour. I have been taking it for 2 months with gradual increases so far Im up to only 30mg's I think he may up the dose again. NO weight loss here!..But with WW I KNOW I will accomplish my goals

:^:

What are your T3 and T4 numbers. 30 mcg of Armour doesn't seem very much. My thyroid is practically nonexistent and I was started on 75...now up to the max. 300. You will still have slow weight loss, but you can lose. It takes awhile for the symptoms to abate. Hope you are feeling better soon! Sounds like you know WW is a good program. You might ask the doctor about a referral to a dietician. There 50% of the hypothyroids are also insulin resistant and have to limit carbs and increase protein and there are foods to be avoided. www.thyroid.about.com is a great site for info.

My doctor is taking it slow in starting me out with low doses, each time i go to see him he increases it little by little. I go through a physical and blood test everytime i visit him. I think its just precautionary.

Wow I'm relly glad I found this site. I was just tested last week for my thyroid. I will get my results tom. It started w/ unexplained weight gain .(40 pounds in just a few months)I've never considered my self an overly emotional person, but lately I can cry at the drop of a hat over the silliest things. I have tried every thing to lose weight taebo ,eating healthy, ect. I've even went w/o eating for a few days and can't lose an ounce. I've been gaining weekly . Sorry for going on & on, but I'm at my wits end. Thanks for listening. Any ideas?

Don't stop eating - it makes thyroid problems worse if you don't eat enough and keep exercising. Unfortunately for most people they weight doesn't fall off once they get on meds so you'll have to be patient and deal with slow weight loss, but you can lose. Ask your doctor for a referral to a registered dietician. Doctors aren't very knowledgeable about food. About half the people with thyroid problems have insulin resistence - hence should eat few good carbs, avoid the bad, and increase protein and eat 5-6 small meals a day.

Good luck!

thanks susan
I got my results back thankfully my thyroid is normal :).They did find a cyst on my left ovary the size of a small grapefruit. It has lots of particles inside of it so I will probably have to have surgery. I wont know until I go to th obgyn Oct. 9th:crossed: . I just had more blood work done yesterday. now they're checking my hormone levels said it could possibly be pcos. thanks again for listening :balloons:

I'm doing a paper for my med terminology class on Hypo, since that's what I am. I found a site that has a list of foods to stay away from. Mostly all the free veggies that we can have on W.W. , but it also says to stay away from soy and processed meat. Does anyone have a clue where I can get a list of processed meat? Is'nt all our meat processed?

happy2bme 10-16-2003 01:15 AM

I think processed meat the stuff that winds up looking nothing like the meat it started out as - stuff like hot dogs, Spam, that deviled ham in a can stuff...
