Food and dealing with pain and stress.

  • I have been dealing with a foot that needs surgery and two health related delays in that surgery. That I injured my other foot (formerly known as the 'good foot'). I started Physical Therapy of the other foot so I can finally have this surgery and have a good leg/foot to stand on.

Doctor gave me a new brace for this other foot. I felt 'new pain' from it and freaked out and overate. I think I'll have to ease into it adding a few hours a day.

Do you have any ideas for the best way to cope with pain and alot of stress of dealing with it all - without overeating. I don't want this to continue. Eating is such a 'gut reaction' for me in relating to pain.

  • BEVERLY ~ my gut reaction to your post is to suggest you keep off your bad foot as much as possible, so that it can heal. Have you ever tried a cane to get some of the pressure off your sore foot? I find using canes really help my legs & back a lot. Also, when my feet start to hurt, I put them up right away now for about 1 hour and that helps a lot too. What I mean is short rests every few hours or so; which is what my doctor suggested.

Do you have any low dose pain meds that might help when it's really bad? I would ask your doctor why your new brace is causing more pain, rather than less. Maybe once the pain is lessened, you won't need to eat. Try drinking some hot tea and taking a nap -- that also might help you too (can't eat while sleeping and sleep is so healing).

Am sending up prayers for you too ...
  • Thanks for your reply justwants2bhealthy. Yes....I am staying off my feet as much as possible and have started some PT. Physical Therapist said that this pain was due to my foot needing to get 'used' to the new brace. I have been doing alot of icing and it has calmed down.

I like your idea of tea. I am doing some deep breathing and meditations.

Thanks so much for your support.
