Abnormal Bleeding...

Not sure if this is the right forum to be posting this in.. if not I'm sorry and can someone please move it.

On to my problem, I've been having some abnormal bleeding, and I'm not quite sure what it is. I don't want to go to my doctor, I feel very uncomfortable talking to her about things, and I know she'll lay into me about my weight since she did it about 3 years ago the last time I was there and weighed probabaly 75lbs less...

Anyway it started about a week ago and I noticed it the first time after having sex with my boyfriend (we've been together 6 years, we haven't been with anyone else, so I know it's not an STD) it was very light, and a pale pinkish red color, I didn't think anything of it since that happens every once in a while after sex. The next few days however it continued it was still very light at this point and I pretty much only noticed it when I wiped, it was still the pinkish red color, then about 3 days ago it started to get heavier and I started to notice it in my pee and in my underwear a little, and it started to become a darker brown color, like the color of the last day or two of your period, today it's so heavy I'm wearing a pad, it not like period flow heavy but heavy enough that I can feel it and there's alot more in my underwear then before. I've also been having lower abdominal pain since this started too. I took a pregnancy test and it was negative. It's not my period since that was almost 2 weeks ago, but I skipped it by not stopping my birth control pill for the week, I've been doing this for about 3 years now, and never had a problem, I don't do it all the time and I don't usually do it irregullary, I skip it in the summer months b/c it's so hot and I'm comfortable enough as it is, in the winter I don't usually skip it, but like I said, I've never had a problem before and I've been doing it for about 3 years. I've looked it up but I can't really find anything, I've found sites that say it could be a cyst, PCOS, cancer, miscarriage etc.

Any insight, or advice? Or anyone with a similar problem?? Thanks.

I would definitely get to a doctor ASAP, because as you said, it could be a cyst, PCOS, cancer, miscarriage etc. If it is any of things, you'd need to be under a doctor's care and the sooner you find out what's wrong, the better. Even if it just turns out to be spotting from skipping your period, getting a doctor's OK should make you feel better.

Also, if you are uncomfortable with your doctor, is there another you can switch to? In my opinion, it does no one good if you are so uncomfortable talking to you doctor that you won't even go for an office visit.

I've just seen my doctor this morning with similar symptoms only I have a progesterone implant which means I should not have periods at all. I think only a doctor can tell you what's going on but my GP thought it most likely that my hormones are out of whack for some unknown reason. She did think that an infection could also be possible. Not all uterine infections are sexually transmitted you know.

Go and get some advice from some one qualified, it may just be that a change in BC is in order.

I've been having a similiar problem on-and-off for the last two years.

I was getting what amounted to TWO periods a month: a "main" period, and a lighter one about two weeks later like what you've described. Not pleasant.

I went to my ob-gyn and got checked out, and everything was fine. I discussed everything from a possible hormone imbalance, to cysts, to early pre-menopause with him.

BUT, the doctor told me that my weight was the culprit. :o

And to be quite honest (like I was with him), the problem has pretty much gone away as I've lost weight.

I can't say if this is what the problem is for you, though. If I were you I would make an appt with your ob/gyn to get checked out and rule out anything sinister.

Find another doctor if you're not comfortable with your present one. There's no reason to go to someone you are uneasy with. You need to be able to talk comfortably with them. If you've gained a lot of weight, of course they're going to discuss this with you, but they shouldn't do it in a demeaning way.

I agree that no one can diagnose this, or tell you if it is serious or not, except a doctor. If you're not comfortable with your doctor, then find someone else. It's appropriate for a doctor to discuss your weight, but if he or she is cruel about it, it strongly indicates that the doctor doesn't understand the issues of weight loss very well, and you need a doctor who does.

The nurse in me cannot pass this thread up. There is only one kind of bleeding that is OK ... ya know ... all other bleeding is a distress signal. Go to a doctor, even if you are uncomfortable.

You know the weight is bad for you. She's not telling you anything you don't already know. You'll get over that embarassment. You can always ask to see an OB/GYN 'just in case'.

i have been having that same problem of recentley only mine is actually heavy enough to be a real period .... well my journey started 2 years ago when i started taking birth control ... i gained about 30 pounds in less than 2 months , anyhow i came off birth control and i stopped getting my period for like 6 months finally when my period came it came with a vengance almost 2 months on my period ! i finally went to my OBGYN and she went through all my blood tests that were proformed by my previous doctor , nothing was wrong there , she did a sonogram .... nothing wrong there either , the only thing she cant suggest is maybe a hormonal imbalance or perhaps the birth control may have messed with the balance of it . see your GYN i know its embarassing (belive me i was mortified) even if they tell you that your weight is the culprit at least you know your ready to take steps to help fix the problem ..... its important dont put it off

For sure you need to get to the doctor. Don't be afraid of what the doctor may say about your weight...remember YOU are the customer, and SHE is being paid to take care of you.

I had a similar thing 3 years ago, and it turned out that nothing specific could be diagnosed, however it's essential that you have the tests to rule out potential causes. All these things can be fixed these days, usually easily.

Remember, get to the doctor, don't leave it!

I also had this problem and I went to the Drs and she told me it was my weight (was 380 pounds at the time). I have since gone down to 297 and all my problems have gone. I did have tests etc., but all came back ok.

About 20 years ago when I was around 300 pounds my periods stopped altogether and then once I started to lose weight they gradually came back. Once I had lost around 80 pounds I had a "permanent period" for around 3 months. My Dr told me that it was the bodys way of not letting me get pregnant as it was in "starve" mode or something.

I´d go see your doctor just to get things clarified. Good luck.

Losing weight can make fat cells release estrogen - which can do that to you. It can happen if you lose as little as ten pounds. Even if you're on BC. Could it be that?

dgramie 07-08-2008 09:20 PM

You do need to go to the dr. There are lots of things it could be...I do it and mine happens for a day or so halfway thru my cycle and its when I am ovulating. Its not something to mess around with!! I have noticed mine is worse since i have been losing weight. let us know what the dr has to say!
