Yet Another Set back....

Well. A few years ago when i was in high school, i tore my ACL and had to have major knee surgery, which, set me back majorly, and I gained a lot of weight because i could play any sports.. fast forward a few years... and i am used to favoring that leg... we went camping and my brother decided to go like climb up this 'mountain' which, was basically a bunch of rocks piled on top of each other... Anyways, i went to step up on this rock (with my non surgery leg...) and what happened??? My knee pretty much gave out. so there i sit. stuck up on this mountain. cant walk, cant do anything. I had to go down the mountain on my hands and butt.... so. when i got home, i went to the ER, and they took some XRAYS and told me it sounded like another tear. My heart immediately sank. I still have to follow up with my Orthopedic Surgeon. I will keep everyone updated...

but. This really puts my exercise on hold. My knee hurts so bad some nights I cant sleep. And walking, wow. Is EXTREMELY difficult.

boo on that =/

MAN, do I feel your pain right now. Had surgery for a knee condition on my right knee when I was 16, got used to favoring the knee, and BAM - left knee goes out. I am also on the "no exercise pending surgery" bandwagon, and let me tell you, it SUCKS....and I have to wait until Sept 13th to even get the operation done, then the 4 week recovery...

The only thing I've been doing is upper body lifting...it isn't my regular cardio, but it IS better than nothing. Also, when I'm on crutches, it'll make it a heck of a lot easier to get myself around if my arms are super strong. Other than that, it has been a major challenge to not do ANY kind of my regular cardio, and it is seriously depressing. Just wanted to send lots of  and tell you that I completely understand what you're going through.

I'm also in the sleepless-because-of-knee-pain club right now. Lately I've been trying to fall asleep with the knee elevated and iced. I know you're not technically supposed to leave ice on the knee that long, but its the only way that it stops hurting, and this has really helped me. Still hurts like heck in the morning, but at least I can fall asleep fairly well.

SORRY that you are both suffering so much; I also injured my right knee in a bad fall down a large flight of stairs at 24 y/o; now I have to use a cane, as I reinjured it over the years several times. Now it just collapses whenever it wants to; the cane helps keep me upright. Have to watch that left knee too; I fractured my left calf after a slip on gravel (of all things); it never did heal right. Yes, I'm a mess too; but that doesn't stop me. I do what I can when I can; and rest when I need to as well. When my leg swells, it's time for a nap with the legs up ...

Some day, when I have lost enuff weight, may need surgery; for now, I'm continuing on with healthy eating. AMANDA, you have done so well to lose all that weight; even if that last four pounds takes a while; you know that you have done tremendously well; try to at least maintain, while you wait for surgery. I do a lot of upper body stuff when my legs are too tired.

BEST WISHES and ^ PRAYERS ^ for some kind of relief very soon for both of you ~ ROSEBUD

You may not be able to exercise you legs but there are excellent exercise videos called chair aerobics for people who are confined to wheelchairs or other non-leg exercising. My husband is an amputee in a wheelchair and we have 4 of these. He does one every day. I got them from the library to try before we bought. Can you get a referral to physical theraphy for a few sessions? They will teach you a lot to do with exercise bands.
