Thyroid Thread

I just got my thyroid evaluated yesterday (our family history on thryoid problems is immense), and it turns out that my thyroid is underactive.

I want to start losing a few pounds again (this time with thyroid medication), and hopefully it won't be this pointless battle where i eat veggies and exercise a lot and still gain.

Does anyone want to join me in this? Willing to post a wee bit every week or so? I'm a student, so I won't be making long posts.

:-)

andrea

QuilterInVA 11-14-2001 11:36 AM

I'll join you ... I also have hypothyrodism and also have asthma and have to take oral steroids...a double whammy but I am still able to lose. I have had 2 appointments with the dietician in my doctor's office and she has helped me immensely. You need to cut back (not out) on carbs, especially refined, and increase protein. Also, eat at the top of your range. We are particularly susceptable to going into starvation mode. Also, exercise to keep your thyroid working. Drink plenty of water and be sure to eat a variety of foods and get 25-30 grams of fiber per day. I wish you success, and lets post occasionally and keep in touch!:p

trixiepup 11-19-2001 12:57 AM

I've finally gotten my medication; pharmacies are such a pain to deal with at times.

I also gotten a 12 week journal at weight watchers, and I've started using that to write down what I eat. My goal right now is to just write stuff down, not necessarily stay in my points range, but i'm not gonna go out of my to eat crappily.

I'm in the midst of a paper writing ****, cuz all the teachers have decided that Thanksgiving break should be used for writing papers and reading textbooks. :-)

How are things going for you?

QuilterInVA 11-19-2001 09:53 AM

Down another half pound---2.5 to go to goal. It's really slow but I don't care how long it takes. My goal for the holidays is to maintain. If I lose, great but this time of year is hard.

I hope your reading and paper writing goes well...I remember those days. I went back to college at 39, while working fulltime, and got my Computer Science Degree.

You'll start feeling better now that you have your meds.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Im in!

i spent the last month doing research& monitoring my body and it seems i have what is known as WTS(wilsons thyroid syndrome) the only way to detect is by monitoring body temp. mine generally falls betwen 96-97. treatment is T3. im gonna call my doc mon for an appt.

kd580 11-24-2001 12:06 PM

hi guys,
im very bummed. its taken me 8 days to lose 1/2 pound and thats after counting every last calorie. the good news is i think i finally found the reason i cant lose. it looks like ive got wts. ive been taking my temp for almost a month& it is typically 96. ive got alot of the symptoms of hypothyroid too. i thought i had that last year.

im tired of feeling lousy from it. im calling my doc on mon. for an appt so i can try to convince her ive got wts cuz the 1 doc that treats wts near me doesnt take my ins.

trixiepup 11-25-2001 09:26 PM

our insurance is the same way kd. they don't do anything unless you are practically dead. i went to my thyroid doctor and paid the $300 for the consultation and tests and stuff, and i got the medicine i need, and i feel so much better.

i figure, if my car were broken down, or my dog or cat were sick, i would pay whatever it took to get them back to normal. and since i would do that for my pets or my car, i should feel the same way about myself, because i am worth more than a car or a dog or a cat.

technically, my thyroid is in the normal range (cuz it is a huge range), but i had a lot of symptoms of hypothyroid. my insurance doctor wouldn't do anything because it is in the 'normal' range, even though i had all these issues and things.

good luck talking with your dr. don't leave without getting what you want. :-)

how are things going with you quilter?

kd580 11-25-2001 11:06 PM

thanks trixie. if you are normal, how did you get meds?

also, does anyone have natural alternatives?

trixiepup 11-25-2001 11:29 PM

my doctor diagnosed me based upon my symptoms and my blood test. for some people, my level would be normal, but for me, it was not. she put me on armour, and is seeing how i react to it. if it helps me, i will continue, if i am too wired, etc, i will not.

that is how thyroid problems were diagnosed in previous years; if you had symptoms, you got the hormones. now they use blood tests to determine if you have thyroid problems, and your personal feelings are invalidated.

kd580 11-25-2001 11:32 PM

thanks:)

QuilterInVA 11-26-2001 01:23 PM

How right you all are. Fortunately for me, when I was diagnosed my TSH level was through the roof so there was no problem. I got to a normal level rather quickly, but then it went out of wack again. It seems every 6 months or so, I have to have it tweaked again. Right now I'm feeling great. I do have one symptom that is infrequently seem...when my TSH is high, I get hoarse and sound like I have a sore throat. Weird, huh?:dizzy:

trixiepup 11-26-2001 01:45 PM

that is odd. i never knew that was a symptom. heh. i hope your tsh stuff doesn't go too wacky.

i've missed one day of food writing down, which i think is good, considering thanksgiving and all. last night, after coming back to school, i was hungry, so i heated up a tv dinner. i took a few bites, and realized how horrible it tasted, and i threw it out. i'm proud of that. heh.

i'm gonna go and work on my **** workload now. 2 10 page essays due this week. blech.

kd580 11-26-2001 01:52 PM

trixie,

sounds like you did great! yay!!!

QuilterInVA 11-26-2001 02:00 PM

Good for you, Trixie. You're a real winner. Isn't it funny how our tastes change and some of the stuff we though was so good is not so awful. Good luck on your reports.:D

Thyroid

Well mybe some of you can throw some suggestions my way. About 3-4 years ago, I was diagnosed with Hyperthyroid (Graves Diseas), after losing 50 pounds quickly. I was given a dose of Radioactive Iodine to kill most or all of the thyroid, and put on Levoxyl. Earlier this year, the dosage I was on was found not to be working the way it should be, so the level was increased. I have also since been trying to lose some weight, have over 100 to lose, don't feel healthy, and am not very happy. I have lost 20 pounds in the span of a year, but still... Any ideas? Thanks.

trixiepup 11-27-2001 02:10 AM

hey annette.

my cousin-in-law has graves disease. i think she still has her thyroid, but it may get zapped later on, if pregnancy tweaks it again.

i have no idea what to suggest, other than eating healthy and exercising. maybe get a second opinion? my sister likes the book living well with hypothyroidism, but i don't know if it would help you.

oh, and kd, my sister's friend tried a natural thyroid thing; some thing she found at the health store, but it hasn't been helping her at all. some gland extract, i think. i dunno.

QuilterInVA 11-27-2001 11:26 AM

Just a couple of suggestions. If you aren't eating higher protein lower carb you may find that it will help. Also, don't cut down too much since we are much more susceptible to going into starvation mode. Exercise is a must. If you can, talk with a dietician. It has helped me immensely in getting my weight off. If you haven't been to www.thyroid.about.com they have a great site loaded with info.

kd580 11-27-2001 01:00 PM

trixie,

thanks for the advice. im starting on kelp today to see if that helps. has anyone had any luck with that?

susan- CONGRATS!!!!!!!! that is sooo awesome!

here is my profile.... yuk!!

highest weight: 188

current weight:173.2

goal:120-125

kd580 11-28-2001 03:04 PM

hi guys,

am going to the endo on 12-20. cant take this anymore. somethin not adding up here.

highest: 188

lowest:125

current:174

QuilterInVA 11-28-2001 03:39 PM

I'm glad you're going to the doctor and you'll be feeling better after you do as well. Please keep posting in the meantime and don't forget to let us know what happens at the doctor's. We're here for you!

kd580 11-28-2001 04:04 PM

thank you quilter:) i will:) im already at 174,&will most likely be at least 175 by tomorrow morning, b/c todays gain got me in to a binge:( not to far my higest 188.

trixiepup 11-28-2001 07:12 PM

and kd, just cuz you had a binge doesn't mean that is what you are for the rest of time. it was yesterday, and today is a new day.

have you tried writing things down? not even trying to eat better or anything...just writing it down? i've found it really helps me.

it's funny, but no matter what i eat during the day, i tend to gravitate around 30 points.. it probably explains why i'd be starving trying to stay in my point range with the new program.

i got one paper done this morning, and i have another one due on friday. i'm going to my bf christmas party...i dunno what to wear. i have a ton of formals (really good sale at an outlet), but it'll be cold (and i am always freezing in formals, it seems). the only warm one i have has some odd dye problem, so it dyes any part of my skin touching the fabric this odd gray/black color

is a formal too formal for a jacket and tie dress code suggestion? should i just wear a skirt and sweater or sweater set? i have this long fuschia shimmery skirt that i love, but i think it might be too bright....

okay, enough obsessing. back to work.

take care y'all!

andrea

oh, and since you shared kd...

highest weight 168ish i think?
present weight 164 (evil gym scale) or 158 (happy home scale)
ww goal from a few years ago was 152
i really would like to weigh 145 or 140, but i have massive doubts about that ever happening, since i'm 5'8 and relatively athletic. i'd settle for a size 8-10. yeah, that'd be cool. i'd fit into plus size vintage clothing!!

kd580 11-28-2001 09:16 PM

lol andrea. have fun at your parties:) im sorry for being unclear. i didnt binge yesterday, i binged today. i am in a weird cycle.... i binge BECAUSE i gain, not the other way around. oh well, i hope to get to the bottom of it in 3 weeks.

housewife 12-07-2001 04:05 PM

hello

Hi every one.

Well I'm a newbee here. My Thyroid turned off sometime during or after my third child. Of course it took me 3 years to figure out I may be ill. A friend said she would drive to ontario and kick me all the way to the Dr if I didn't get there. My TSH was 203.5 I'm now in the "normal" range. I'm also having hip problems they never went back after having kids. I have joined a health recovery group and do a stretching work out twice a week. Any way it is now time to wake up. Eating right and losing weight may help. I'm really glad I found this group because it is so nice to talk to people who understand thyriod problems. :)

kd580 12-07-2001 04:08 PM

welcome!!

QuilterInVA 12-10-2001 08:18 AM

Glad to have you join us...keep posting and we'll help each other.

housewife 12-29-2001 05:23 PM

thanks for the welcome everyone. I guess I will really start after new years. My hubbies home on holidays and is baking up a storm. Have to test everything and make sure it is ok for the kids to eat.

trixiepup 01-03-2002 05:01 PM

wow. the thread is hot for views. cool. i haven't gotten the emails saying more posts were added.

new years was fun. i made cheese and chocolate fondue. the latter was very good. the former was okay.

my party was fun. the dress i wore was second hand, and through the night it started to disintegrate. very sad. when i hugged my bf goodnight, it ripped up the back. i think the previous owner was too heavy for the dress and stretched the seams out. luckily, all the falling apart was hidden by a opaque overlay.

i am feeling better now. i am actually warm at night w/o my down comforter and 5 blankets. i just have the blankets now. easier to make the bed too. i never thought that would happen.

i gained the 5lbs i lost in november...finals and holiday foods did me in. but it was really yummy.

i jogged this morning in the mountain trails behind my apt. if any of you are technologically inclined and have extra money, a heart rate monitor is very nice. it is very motivating and keeps beeping until you are working out in your target heart zone.

well, i need to go buy books now and head off to class. any updates from you all?

andrea

kd580 01-04-2002 12:40 AM

andrea,

dont worry about the 5! sorry bout the dress:)

QuilterInVA 01-04-2002 10:57 AM

Andrea, it was great to hear from you. Did you check the box at the bottom to get notification when someone replies here?

Sorry about your dress...good it didn't show. It sounds like something that would happen to me.

I am sure you will get the 5 pounds under control soon.

I remember the long lines we used to have to buy college textbooks. I'm sure glad those days are behind me.

Keep in touch and good luck with your new semester.

trixiepup 01-04-2002 11:14 AM

yeah, i have the check box checked, but i think the notifications got lost in my junkmail box, and got deleted.

i am sooo thrilled. i found a $110 text for $47 on amazon used. even with shipping, it's cheaper. whoo-hoo!

i went walking again this morning...beautiful, but really cold. i want to see if i can start a walking club for people in my apt complex area, but i have no idea if that would work...i don't think many students want to go walking at 7:30am...

we'll see.

so did any of you guys make resolutions or anything?

andrea
