I have been lurking on this whole site for a while now but for some reason only recently found the dieting with obstacles link. I decided to sign up and start posting as you have all inspired me with your challenges.
I was born with several challenges, one being having Central Core Disease. This is a degenerative muscles disease that belongs somewhere in the muscular dystrophy family. I have the challenge that if I over use my muscles I will damage them but of course if I don't use them they will just atrophy. A few weeks ago I went to my doctor because of my knee, I've had knee problems on and off all my life. I really need surgury on it but the recovery time will lead to more muscles loss in the rest of my leg. So my surgeon said that he wants a second opinion. Oh, I also have osetoarthritis in the knee. I know exercise and dieting is needed to lose weight but I am really scared to do more damage. I am really at a loss what to do because I know losing weight will also help my body. Anyone else have a simular quandry? |
Hi Silver star and welcome
I don't know much about that disease but you have found a good place to vent and get insperation. Can you do water exercise? it's very easy on the muscles and joints but you still get a good workout. We all have problems too but l am doing real good lossing weight by doing the sugar busters diet, we took all white flour and sugar out of our diets and l am lossing weight. I have lost 25lbs in 5 weeks. Were abouts in Alberta are you? I am in Calgary, just moved here from the Toronto area. Feel free to ask any questions you have. |
Have a great week ...
HI LADIES ~ Hope you all had a HAPPY EASTER WEEK!
We had a huge snow storm here all last week; but the snow finally ended this morning, and we have a little sunshine this afternoon! Had a wee accident; crushed my finger taking my turkey out of the freezer; hoping it's not broken; we'll see if the swelling goes down by tomorrow or it's off to the hospital. Ya, I'm a real CALAMITY JANE ~ alright! :welcome: ~ SILVERSTAR ~ glad you found us; please come back again as we'd luv to get to know you. We all have some challenges and have to work around them on a daily basis. I really like MO's water aquatics idea; and the chair aerobics we listed on page one, message #7 are good too. Eating healthy and losing weight will help us all feel better ~ that's why we're here; but, we just have to be more careful about our physical limitations! MO ~ Thanx so much for your encouragement; I just recently found out I have lost more than I thought. A friend told me the max on the scale I was first weighed on; I was over, so I had to guess. Have lost more than 73 lbs. Yes, I'm so close to the twonieland numbers ~ can't wait. I am ordering a hydraulic scale so I can weigh myself at home; and I'll have an update then; sure hope I've lost some. Anyways, hope you all have a great week; take care and keep on, keepin' on ~ your fellow encourager ... ROSEBUD. |
WOW Rosebud thats great news about a bigger loss than you thought, that must of made you happy.
Yeah the weather out here is terriable right now but soppose to warm up by this weekend. Sorry to hear about your finger l hope it's not broke. Just remember to take it easy and don't over do it. We had a quiet Easter, just the 3 of us, the easter bunny brought Eric a singing dancing bunny and some new jammies, no candy cause he don't eat it and we (DH and I ) don't need it. :) I have been working on toilet traning Eric today so every 30 minutes l have been taking him into the bathroom, so far nothing but he loves washing his hands afterwards so thats a bonus. Hope you have a good night and a better day tomorrow. All the other special ladies I hope your doing good and that your doing the best you can on the exercise front. |
Hi all:
Thanks for the warm welcome. I was so amazed to find this thread, it feels good knowing that others have the same struggles. I live in Ponoka, which is a small town. Classes for water aerobics happen while I am at work. I may go one day during lane swim and see if I can get an empty lane. Water does make exercising easier, almost too easy. I have to learn how to pace myself so I don't overdo it in the pool. I am intersted in the chair aerobics, I downloaded a chair yoga routine the other day, I have yet to try it. |
Hi Silver since you said small town l guess your not in Calgary :) We just moved here from Ontario. Yes water is easy but it is easy to over do it. Just start off will small steps till your body lets you know it's ready to accept more.
All the other friends I hope your doing good and enjoying spring like weather finally. Today is the nicest day we have had so far out here. Rosebud, you haven't posted in awhile l hope your not over doing it and that your feeling ok? I am thinking of you and hope all is well. I am hoping to lose these 6 more pounds before we fly home to Ontario in 9 days wish me luck. |
Checkin' in Ladies ...
Hi MO ~ I'm hangin' in there MO. I posted last Monday; Tuesday went out shopping twice; maybe did overdo it, cuz Wednesday, I was sick all day with a flu bug again (my immune was down with this hand thing). Spent most of the afternoon in bed.
My pc was on the fritz Wednesday night ~ finally got it all fixed up today (had to reboot and all). My sis in Manitoba made a suggestion that I'm gonna try to get this 'ole pc to work a little better for me. That was funny about the candy, MO. Canadians do have a great sense of humor. I hope you make your goal, before you go on your trip home. You are doing so well, I think that you will certainly come very close. HI SILVERSTAR ~ glad you found the chair yoga program; I've also added Ladies low-impact sit-ups and leg-lifts (do them on a bed or couch) to give me more minutes each day. I use my imagination to create new moves; anything counts that burns energy for any length of time. One trainer said that it's the total minutes that you are engaged in any kind of movement that really counts. I'm going for 20-30 minutes a day of walking and miscellaneous exercises. I find listening to music and/or TV really makes the time pass by more quickly. As for the swimming, put a time limit on it, say 20-30 minutes, and increase it in little increments (ie 10 minutes), depending on how you feel afterwards. For me, how I feel the next day is always the best measure of whether I overdid it or not. I did with ski-walking ~ had to knock it down to 10-20 minutes at a time ~ LOL!!! Had snow all day today, so stayed inside and watched all my lovely birdies. This year, we've had more different kinds of birds than ever before ~ like Woodpeckers, Starlings, Finches, Grossbeaks, Snowbirds, Junkos, Doves or Partidges (not sure), Chickadees, yellow/mint green like grossbeaks, two kinds of blackbirds, Winter Wrens, and Squirrels. It's kind of like ~ build it and they will come; only it's put out food, and they will come; BUT, it's so nice of GOD to bring them our way; they lift our spirits with their funny antics. HI TO ALL OUR OTHER FRIENDS ~ like ERIN, KATHY, JOANNE, and JENNYLEE. Hope you are all well; God Bless, and keep on, keepin' on ~ your fellow encourager ... ROSEBUD. |
Have a great trip ...
Hey MO ~ ~ you must be getting really excited about your trip home this weekend; only five days to go. I bet you are busy packing and getting last-minute things ready. I know that you are going to have a fab time; and for two whole weeks!!!
Just wanted to pop in and say HI to everyone; we had a lovely weekend and a beautiful sunny day today. Just did laundry and small chores today. My hand is getting better; still black, but not as swollen and starting to fade; and it doesn't hurt like before either. DH was a sweety and did the dishes for me all week. Hope all our other past visitors are doing OK. I take it from your extended absence, that you are all well; and I'm happy for that! Have a great week and take care; and keep on, keepin' on ~ your fellow encourager ... ROSEBUD. |
Hello ladies-I was not born with anything but I have had fibro for about 25 years. I have a grandaughter-17-and she has spinal bifida and is confined to a wheelchair and the floor for getting around, She has had a bit of a weight problem but she has a hand driven wheelchair and she goes to the gym for strengthening, She is so strong!! She can swim, play the piano and she wants to be a drama teacher, One of the nicest young ladies I have ever met-of course I am not prejudiced. So I wish you all the best and I guess you can thank God for what you are able to do-Mima

 HI EVERYONE ~ what a beautiful weekend we had; went to a nearby lake and even managed to walk a little too. It was lovely, even if all the ice wasn't melted yet. I was raised near water, so I am drawn to it all the time. We have lakes in and around our town, so we make many visits to them regularly from early spring until late fall.
HI MIMA ~ glad to hear your grand-daughter is doing so well; and she sounds like she has a wonderful attitude; really that is what it's all about! Accepting our limitations, but not letting them stop us from enjoying our lives and trying new things. We are all very grateful for our blessings and to be able to do what we can ~ that's just one of the reasons why I am trying so hard to get healthier. Pain is a big issue for many SPINA patients (as with FIBRO). We suffer terribly at times, but with GOD's GRACE, we can push through and even overcome! Growing up, I had two friends with spina bifida ~ both confined to wheelchairs. Some people are able to rise above the chair, but sadly some aren't. I'm so glad your grand-daughter has! DEAR MO ~ don't know if you can check in while in Ontario, but I so extend my best wishes for you, Eric, and your DH during your visit home. Hope you have a fabulous time with your family and friends. Miss your lovely spirit; will be so glad when I hear from you again! TO ALL OUR OTHER FRIENDS ~ we sure hope you all are happy and well; and that everything in your lives are improving, esp with your health. You are all in my prayers ~ your fellow encourager ... ROSEBUD. |
Sounds like you are a Christian-so am I-please pray for Alison. Thanks Mima

We had another beautiful week!
HELLO MIMA ~ ~ no problem; actually, I already have prayed for your grand-daughter, Alison. I asked GOD if He would help her dreams to come true; I know He hears, so now we just have to wait for the preparation and opportunities to come to fruition for her at the right time.
Yes, I'm sure it's always obvious that I am a Christian; my faith in GOD and His beautiful Son (JESUS) is what has carried me thru my whole life. My DH is reading over my shoulder and sends his best wishes for your grand-daughter as well. We think "the skies the limit" for her; and that she just has to "go-for-it" that's all! To all our other friends, and MO ~ hope you are all well and MAY GOD BLESS YOU RICHLY TODAY! Your fellow encourager ... ROSEBUD. |
Hello ladies - can I play?:^:
I just found this thread and it looks pretty cool! :carrot: I have a few "issues" - osteoarthritis in lower back, sacro-iliac joint, maybe hips and knees too. Sciatica on both sides at different times (if they ever gang up on me I;m staying in bed that day!!). Slipped disk that showed itself a month or two ago. Sore feet for 6+ years and NOTHING has helped (custom orthotics, homoepathy, physiotherapy). Possible fibromyalgia or some other musculo-skeletal thing - haven't gotten a definite dx from a "real" medical doc but naturopath suggested it. CHRONIC PAIN and fatigue from all of the above... :( And guess what? I'm an emotional eater. Which is why I find myself on a board called 3fatchicks. But I love the name. ALL the docs tell me to lose weight but all of the above and genetics are against me. I try to exercise but end up in pain again. Haven't had much real help in avoiding injury etc whilst exercising... hope to try again next month though. I had surgery in April (unrelated to all the above) and am waiting for the doc to clear me for exercise. I'm interested in some of the videos etc mentioned... must look for them in the library when I finally get there. When I am well I do go to the gym (and do very basic stuff), swimming once a week, and I like walking... |
