Prolactin back up...
I know I have previously asked this but not sure if everyone saw it, has anyone had their prolactin go high again, after years of being controlled on Cabergoline? Nothing has changed (as far as other health issues) I guess my tumor got tired of responding to the medicaiton.
What doses are you all taking of cabergoline? Right now I am taking .5mg 3 times a week. For years .25mg controlled it at 2 times a week. I am still back up to 25lbs pre tumor weight. I go back to the endocrinologist on the 4th so hopefully I can get some answers. |
Hi all. Just thought I'd post an update. Well, with the aid of Dostinex and Nutrisystem I finally shed most of the weight I'd gained after 2 years of trying. Healthy eating and/dieting alone did not do it. Something about Nutrisystem, maybe the blood sugar control, was the key for me. The Dostinex twice a week also seemed to help once I added it in to the mix.
However, 2 months after I started the Dostinex, my periods returned and I decided to try for baby #2. I just did a pregnancy test today and it was POSITIVE so I shed the weight just in time to gain it back. LOL. At least I know I can lose it again later. This is the seconds time Dostinex has worked and I have become pregnant so it is definitely possible to have a baby if you use this medication to lower your prolactin and start cycling again. Hi,
Im new here after looking for imformation on the medication I have been prescribed 'Bromocriptine'. To be honest I almost cried reading the comments. In the past 4-5 years I have gone from a uk size 12 to a 20 (I think that would be a US 8 to a US 16) Weight mainly on my stomach hips and bust. I was never big on exorsize but I wasn't unhealthy and never ate to an extreme. When I first started gaining weight and got to a 16 I began to diet, attended a gym etc, but didn't lose and kept gaining. My periods stopped a year and a half ago and the weight really piled since then I have gained almost 40lb. Dieting and almost starving myself would barely shift anything which made me depressed and binge (which didnt help). I was too scared to go to the doctors as I was terrified of them telling me I was infertile. But under duress from my boyfriend I went and the results came back as high prolactin, my gp blamed this on my anti-deprassants and took me of them. After 3 months I returned and was tested again where they found my prolactin was even higher. I waited another two months for an appointment with an endocrine specialist where she explained about the tumour and the tests I would go through she also told me my prolactin was 3600 and something. I mentioned my weight gain but she blamed it on eating and lack of exercize (which I feel is unfair and does not explain the rate I gain weight) 4 months later I have just got the results from my mri and blood test and it is confirmed I have a secretring pituatary (also my levels are now over 3700). Even though the specialist had said weight gain was not linked forums online had confirmed my suspisions. I was excited to get the medication, for the return of my periods (as I am getting married in two years) and, finally, to lose weight. I thought I was unlucky it wasn't noticed earlier, as because it was so high I assumed it had been affecting me for years. But from reading on here this doesn't seem the case and it seems I may gain even more weight. I honestly just feel so sick of it I am 25 and have spent my 20's so far embarrassed and ashamed of my body. I really hoped getting this sorted would help. Sorry for the long post. |
I also have a question is prolactin measured differently in US to UK, from reading posts on here most people have a high of 200. But mine is currently over 3700! Has anyone else got one as high?

Hello Ladies,
I finally went to see the endo and she put me on Bromocriptine 2.5mg. I have to take one tab daily. Uugh!! I do hope that it bring my level down enough so that we can become pregnant. I did ask questions but the answers were similiar to the one's above so...nothing new of course!! But hopefully things will get better and this tumor will dissolve! Hope all of you are doing well and getting thinner!! That's it for now, hopefully my new news will be good news next time ladies, Good Luck All!! @ Clang (Crystal), Hope that i can get the same results one day =) Good Luck 2 U and ur little one!! @ Shellebelle85, Not sure about the numbers, but you should ask your endo and hopefully she can give u a good explanation, Good Luck!! |
Well I have been taking bromocriptine for two weeks and doubled from 1mg to 2mg today, then next week I go to 2.5. Im having pretty bad headaches and am tired all the time but I cant be sure how much that is the tablets and how much is the fact that I started my teaching practice at the same time (I'm a trainee teacher).
Hopefuly it doesnt get much worse, the thing I hate most is the sinus pain I know that is the tablet as it always comes on about an hour after I have taken it. I dont understand why it happens though. |
I could not be happier to find this thread. I was diagnosed with pituitary adenoma in 1998. I had a baby in 2009 and I have been a mess since. My weight has skyrocketed and I can't lose a single pound. Breastfeeding did not work for me, yet I am still leaking. I finally went back to my endo 2 weeks ago and she is waiting to put me back on my meds until she get my bloodwork back and my MRI results.
I am tired of the lack of energy, the bloating, the moodswings, and I have been so depressed. I have not had my menses for about 8 mos. Never thought I would be so happy to say it , but I can't wait to get my period!!!!! I am hoping that I don't have too much side affects from the medicine. I hoping it helps me with my weight issues, but that is really was has me soooooo upset. I have stopped doing stuff I love because I am so ashamed with how I look, I just don't do anything anymore. So happy to know I am not the only one. Anyone so bloated that they can't get their rings on? I have never had it this bad. |
UPDATE:
I went to my first endo appointment and i was put on 2.5mg bromocriptine. I was having so much sinus problems that i couldn't hardly breath and sleep at night because i had so much nasal congestion, so she changed me to cabergoline .5mg and i take a 1/2 tab 2x a week. I am doing pretty good with that med because i have no side effects but it seems as if im eating more. For some odd reason, i have always had my periods every month but since i been taking the meds, my period is late this month, i took a pt but it was neg., so i don't know what to expect, but if it don't come, i will be calling my endo and take the next step! But n e way hope everyone is doing well and look forward to reading new post, i will keep you posted, later! |
My prolactin finally is down to 22 which is great! So I am supposed to stay on the .5 Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. My Endocrinologist doesn't care that I am 30lbs heavier than the year before even though I am calorie counting and running 4 times a week. So I asked my regular doctor and suggested I try Phentermine for 2 months I started 2.5 weeks ago and have been able to lose 6lbs! So I don't feel so helpless about the weight now.
I had my MRI last week and will find out when I see the neurosurgeon next week if it has grown. My Goldman's field of vision test showed that my blind spot has not enlarged so that is good news too. Just curious still what the highest dose of Dostinex people have been on, and if your Endo's tell you that you may need to stay on it for the rest of your life. |
Hey everyone, I forgot I posted on here a while ago...my mind has been somewhere else obviously. Well, I still don't have insurance and I've still been without medication(s) for my prolactinoma for a year and a half and it is really taking it's toll on me. I am a full time student w/ good grades and can not see a doctor! I went to my local health clinic and the financial lady had to see my papers from school (ok??) about my student loans/financial aid. She said I got too much money back from student loans last year (about 4 grand for the WHOLE year and not all at once) and I would have to pay an outrageous amount to be seen there. I've been denied medicaid about 3 times. I'm sooo frustrated!! Any advice?? :( :( :(
|
Natalie- My dr had me on Phentermine too. I loved it, of course. I had so much energy and it made me so thirsty I was drinking water like crazy- which is a good thing. I was on it for 3 months and lost 15lbs. Unfortunately the last time I seen the doctor she said she had to take me off of it because one of the side effects is a possible "leaky heart valve" which is also one of the possible side effects with Dostinex. We both decided it wasnt worth dieing over... My endo said most of her patients with small tumors are on the medication for 1-3 years, but from what I read on here and another site, some people are on it for alot longer. Theres another support group on a page called "daily strength" you might want to check it out.

Kbrooke, I may be able to help you. Which med. and what dosage do you need?

You have my empathy
 I'm reading the experiences here, and it's all so sad... And I can relate to having hormone based weight issues AND how bad it stings when people look at you and just assume it's because you're lazy and eat like crap... and how heartbreaking it can be to work so hard only to NOT lose, or seem to gain it all back just by EXHALING *lol* OR to lose in ALL the WRONG places like me... I would work my *** off in the gym, only to lose weight in my FACE, arms and BOOBS, making me look like an emaciated, flat chested crackhead from the WAIST UP... From the waist down I looked exactly the same. There was a point where I got fed up with my body's lack of cooperation (which is REALLY the problem here, NOT diet or exercise) so I decided to resort to chemical warfare. Really dirty chemical warfare. I WANTED to take HCG, but the real thing is very UNaffordable and the "oral homeopathic" is (what I found out the hard way) a ton of B.S. Homeopathic is just a really fancy way of saying "watered down" and if you don't believe me, look it up. Imagine paying 20+ bucks for A DROP of real hormone suspended in 3 oz of water...especially in the name of a CHEAPER ALTERNATIVE (20$ per drop in a vial vs. 20+$ a dose of the real stuff?). Insanity. I tried it and found out that not only was it NOT working (even after taking MORE than the recommended dose a day...which is what the person whom I bought it from suggested I do if I wasn't experiencing results. I took as much as 4x the recommended dose multiple times a day everyday, and nada), but that my body was going through the same changes and symptoms that I would have if I were experiencing starvation...because, DUH, I WAS!!!. So I looked for another option that would produce results at a similar rate. I found it, and oh believe me it works...but it's VERY dangerous. And it's not for everybody. And it requires savvy to find, as I'm guessing it might not be legal considering what it took for me to find a place to get it *lol*. It's called Dinitrophenol.

My questions for are: -When you get pregnant, do you have to go off of the medication? -How often are they monitoring your levels if they do? -Did your physician require MRIs before getting pregnant or during? -After Pregnancy did your tumor change at all? |

Thank you all!
First just wanted to say this forum is great. I've learned a lot. Second just wanted to say you all are beautiful no matter how much weight you've gained. Plus, you all are special. Weight doesn't make the person, your personality, character and integrity does. My boyfriend has macroprolactinoma and he didn't have increased weight until beginning his medication (Bromocriptine). I can honestly say that all I see is the wonderful person that he is and I wouldn't trade him for a Brad Pitt, Ryan Reynolds, or any other actor/model/singer, etc that superficial vain people categorize as beautiful. Beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder and I KNOW my guy is one in a million. Just know that all of you are also ONE in a million.

Thank you (sjms71).....and i will!

There is hope!
Hello,
I was diagnosed with prolactinoma in August of 2010. The adenoma is small but boy did it wreak havoc with my body. I gained upwards of 30 pounds and appeared to be 6-8 months pregnant at times with cravings and all. For those of you just diagnosed, I just want to say there is hope for your weight gain. I was just told with my last round of blood work (about 2 weeks ago) that my prolactin level is normal. The doctor stepped my cabergoline dosage up gradually and is now beginning to work on stepping it back down. I have lost about 16 pounds in the last 2-3 months and am getting my nicer figure back. I don't know if the medicine helps to shrink the tumor or not. I am scheduled for another MRI in August which, will make it around the anniversary of my diagnosis, and will find out then. I hope this helps you and all the rest who read it! |
New member..Pituitary Tumor!
I am thrilled to have found this site. I was diagnosed with a pituitary tumor in may of 2010 at the age of 20. After lactation I went for a check up and I had prolactin levels of just 53 which my doctor was not to interested in, so I was told to get an MRI. After my MRI I was told my tumor was just 3mm. I was put on Cabergoline and have been on it for about 6 months and have a few side effects. Random times of nausea, and some mild head aches. I have not suffered from weight gain that much but am concerned about that. I was also told that I would have a hard time starting a family, which was very hard to take in. I have been a relationship for about 6 years, and plan to get married and start a family in about 3-4 years. Has anybody had trouble getting pregnant? and my doctor informed me that i will have to swith to the other med Bro something? I heard those side effects are horrible and am not looking forward to switching when trying to start a family? is there any known reason as to why you have to switch? My doctor is not to good about keeping me informed! I went back to get my blood tested a week ago and my levels were down to 7.11!! I was so excited until my doctor told me I would have to be on this medicine for the rest of my life. Any idea why? I go for an MRI July 1 and am curious to see how the tumor looks! My main concern is having children, my dream! I am so glad that I found others that I can try and get answers from and reach out too!

Hello! I have a microadenoma also. I have been going back and forth to my Fertility Dr. and my Endo trying to get my levels down and get pregnant. They told me that my prolactin malfunction can cause infertility, so now i am taking cabergoline and i just started on clomid to. Hopefully i will become pregnant soon. My prolactin level is down to normal so hopefully this clomid will help me do the trick, but its kinda scary to me taking both meds, but i guess the doc's know what they are doing. Bromocriptine is definitely a NO for me!! It cause me to not sleep at night because i couldn't hardly breathe through my nose, so yes, the side effects are horrible. But I hope everything work out for you and me both so we can have a BFP!!! =) Good Luck and I will keep you ladies posted! SN: Endo apptmnt 3-11, wish me luck!! |
I was diagnosed in 1998 and tried bromocriptine but decided that breast leakage was better than the side effects so I quit. I decided to get pregant in 2001 and the doctor put me on cabergoline. We had to do IVF to get pregnant since my husband was sterile from chemo but I got pregnant the first try at IVF. A bonus of this condition is I had no trouble breastfeeding!!! However, after failing to lose weight after much trying and a bout with mastitis 2 years after stopping breastfeeding, I decided to try cabergoline again. I immediately started losing weight. The endo who prescribed the cabergoline had also mentioned if I decided to get pregnant, I should switch to bromocriptine but I didn't ask about this as I wasn't intending to have another child anytime soon. But life changes and I decided to get pregnant again 8 months after starting. Since I had my first child on cabergoline with no ill effects, I decided to ignore the endo's advice. I also asked the fertility clinic if I needed to switch and they didn't think so, so I didn't check into the reasons why it was recommended to switch. Anyway, I kept using cabergoline and after first try with frozen embryos I am pregnant on twins!!! As long as your prolactin is low enough to allow you to ovulate, you should be able to get pregnant (if you or your partner have no other underlying conditions). Hope this info helps some of you. Don't give up hope of having a family if that is what you want.

Thank you so much for the encouraging words! I do have faith that it will happen soon, my level is down to normal 11.4, so hopefully we will become preggo soon! We both got good lab work back with no other conditions other than my tumor so hopefully things will work out fine. I did start and finish my first round of clomid, apptmnt with OB 3-15, for midcycle ultrasound, wish me luck. I will keep you ladies posted and i hope you all levels are coming down to normal also. Good luck!! |
When I was diagnosed, my endo told me that I would probably have to be on Cabergoline for 1 year to 18 months. She said given her past experience with former patients, the dopamine would eventually destroy the tumor. I have been following this link and a few others for a couple of months. More and more I am reading that people have these tumors for years and years. Is this something I'm stuck with? Has anyone heard of instances were someone was eventually "cured" (besides having surgery).

Hi S1Shine, I was diagnosed at 20 I started on Bromocriptine, but do to the constant sick feeling and vomiting I switched to dostinex (cabergoline). Which was a blessing! I am now 29, the tumor is still going strong, if I miss a dose my prolactin goes up. So some of the tumors are very persistent, hopefully yours will shrink! My neuro surgeon said that sometimes they just burn out. Mine actually last year started defeating the medicine and I had to up the dose from .25 twice a week to .5 three times a week.
|
Update on my prolactin level:
Had a blood test 2 weeks ago. My prolactin is now at 3. The endo has cut my dose in 1/2. Will get retested in another month. So far I have lost 21 lbs since I started taking Cabergoline. Since I am only taking 1/2 pill once a week, I noticed 3 days after my last dose I started getting headaches again. I took my 1/2 pill last night and today no headache yet but I do have some sinus pressure. |
Its been a while since I have been on here, I was diagnosed with a Prolactinoma 5 years ago, and thanks to the change in healthcare costs my insurance at the company I worked for changed drastically, where my treatment was no longer covered. Now I have moved to a different company where the healthcare is even worse, so I have looked into some homeopathic remedies. I have decided to use a vitamin B compound multivitamin, and try Chasteberry. Due to the costs related with treament, I guess the only way I will know if anything is working, is if the lactation decreases, or ceases to exist, and if my mentrual cycle returns. This is a big step for me, as I havent menstruated in 10 years, and got used to it, if it does return I am not sure how to handle that. :) but hopes are my husband and myself will be able to conceive and have a child together, I am not getting any younger here, and would love to have children of my own. I have 4 step children, I would like have one of my own

Hair Loss and Bromocriptine
Hello everyone, I am brand new here and actually stumbled across this site by doing a search regarding hair loss and bromocriptine. I will tell you briefly about my story and I feel I can offer some positive encourgement and maybe someone can do the same for me. I was diagnosed with a prolactinoma in 2007. We (several doctors and myself) tried dostinex and then switched to bromocriptine to shrink my tumor with no success. I had surgery to remove my tumor in 2008 due to it invading my eyesight. My surgery was terrible and I had several complications. Within two months of my surgery my prolacin levels were on the rise again which meant either the surgeon did not get it all or it was already growing back. Which, either one of these scenarios is not all that uncommon. So on to the bromopriptine we go. I have been on this medication every day since 2008. During all of this I gained 50 pounds. I must tell you that this was out of my control. I never weighed more than 140 pounds my entire life and this was so not me!!! I also had and still have thyroid issues due to all of the complications. I am on replacement hormones for that also. It took approximately one year for me to lose all of my weight and then some. I am actually smaller now then before my tumor. Please just know that you cannot control what your body is going through. And it WILL come off. I am living proof. Stay strong. Yes you have been dealt a bad hand but you will get through it!!!
Now........ I have been having signigicant hair loss for quite some time and its really starting to show. Anyone out there have hair loss due to bromocriptine use??? I would appreciate any response and would be happy to answer any questions you may have. Good Luck!! |
Frustrating weight gain!
I was diagnosed with a microadenoma in 2010 but I've been showing symptoms since 2008. I am 1.56m (5"1) short and I have gained 35 kilograms (roughly 80 pounds) in the last three years even though my lifestyle and eating habits haven't changed. In fact, I eat healthier now than ever before with smaller portions and more veggies. I do not drink cold drinks(sodas), only water. My biggest transgressions are a beer or three at night and minimal exercise but it's not as if I used to be the most active woman around. I am now 26 and grossly overweight and it's fueling my existing (yet managed) depression.
My GP told me about bromocriptine but the neurosurgeon recommended I stay off the meds until such a time comes that I want to fall pregnant. In the meantime, I look pregnant!! If anyone has any tips or advice, please feel free to tell me! |
Hi there, I'm also new here! Although I have had no hair loss due to this, my nails have gone all wonky. My toenails are growing in at an alarming rate (I've never had ingrown toenails before) and my fingernails are more brittle than they used to be.
I'm trying to figure out whether I should go on Bromocriptine or not. All I know is that if I gain even one more ounce of weight I am going to go insane. I've never been this size in my life! |
Hello,
you just gave me a hope I could actually lose weight after my pregnancy. I went through a similar situation as you did. I have alwas had a bit higher prolactin levels but nobody actually advised me to do anything with it so I let it be. Anyway, when I met my current husband we were trying for a baby and nothing happened. So I went my colleague-gynecologist and he found out that my husbandś sperms are wrong. So we went through IVF as well. It was pretty hard. Immediately after stimulation I started gaining weight like crazy. Then I got pregnant (at our first try, thanks god ). During my pregnancy my weight kept on rising. But eveyone was telling me that after I give a birth the weight situation will be ok within 6months. Unfortunately, no way! I was not lactating as to our family depression anamnesis so the doctors stopped it right away. And now, after 7 month since the delivery I sussenly started lactating, lost my period, etc...I just did not know what to do with this so I talked to my husband (doctor MRI) and we made a check of my hypophysis by MR. Everything seemed ok. Unfortunately, my blood tests showed prolactin abou 309!! Very very high. So I went to my endo and was told that it is a microprolactinoma with a very high probability even thougt nothing was seen on MR. Also, just cannot lose weight. I gained about 79 punds, lost 33 after the birth and then it stopped. I tried everything but nothing works. Sometimes I think I am able to gain weight even if I do not eat and run all day. My endo has told me (also) that hyperprolactinemia has nothing to do with the weight. So I am extremely happy to hear that also other women have such problems. I almost lost the rest of my self-confidence. I used to be a pretty thin girl and now my size is 16/18 UK. Started with 10! Yesterday was my first cabergolin/Dostinex day. So I really hope the hormone level is the main cause. I will keep in touch. Hold on everybody. As you can see, even in the rest of Europe most doctors do not know anything about the relation weight gain/prolactinoma. Quote:

Hello all,
what a great forum! I went through all the threads and I am in the same situation as most of you. Only I feel with you regarding medical insurance. It is pretty sad that because of bad insurance you cannot be prescribed with cabergolin/dostinex which is the best (no doubt). In our country it is pretty cheap in comparison. 8 tablets of dostinex cost about 50 USD. Which is much better than 160. So I offer as we are a medical family. If anyone has problems with the insurance do not hesitate to contact me. If the price is ok for you I could send cabergolin/dostinex by post. I only believe it could help. Thanks god our insurance companies are still pretty ok with the medicaments. I wish you all the luck and strong mind with weight and hormone fighting! |
Prolactinoma & weight loss surgery
I am happy my husband found this site; it makes me feel better to know I'm not crazy. For at least 2 years I have been fighting weight gain, mood swings, foot edema, no periods, no libido, & acne. I am on Cabergoline, I am a strict vegetarian that enjoys outdoor activities, but no matter what I do, the weight won't go down, but in fact keeps climbing up instead. Needless to say this is very discouraging & depressing. I have done everything from yoga to extreme programs like P90X-during that time I gained 12 pounds. I am now considering weight loss surgery as an option. I was wondering if anyone here has considered it or is going to have it done.
|
Why wait to start the meds? It makes no sense to me. Unless you can't handle the side effects but you won't know until you try. I went on and off of them through the years since diagnosis. And my endo said if I was to stay on cabergoline for about 3 years, he thought maybe that the problem would reverse itself and my prolactin level could go back to normal and stay there without drugs. I ended up getting pregnant so I'll have to try again later once I stop breastfeeding but it will be worth the try. Plus the weight loss was easier on the cabergoline. Not sure about bromocriptine though since I was never on that one for long.

Weight loss is a big trouble as it has so many varieties which can make you confused while dieting but from my side instead of dieting one should concentrate on balanced diet so that you could make big progress in loosing weight without affecting your health.
