Is there a reason why stats are not available for these blogs (i.e. number of visitors per day, etc.) They are available on other wordpress blogs - hence my inquiry.

That's not something in Wordpress by default, it would require a plugin.

Looks like a stats plugin would be way too resource intensive to implement. If each individual blog had it's own database, it would work really well. But they all share one very large database, and the experts advise against it.
