PIpsicle I looked at Dr. Fung's Obesity Code book last night to see what he recommends eating and the different ways to do IF. I hear so much about LCHF and Keto etc that I wanted to know what he had to say about what we eat. I also found it interesting to read that not everyone does EF as many do the 16:8 ratio. Explaining what I learned as best as I understand it... One thing h e says that I had not seen before is to give this way of eating a month to get used to. He also says it might be a little difficult in the beginning to do it 100% so to it is good to be patient with yourself. and give yourself time to get into a routine. I think I need to read the book some more, possibly on a regular basis at least until I get used to what I am doing and why because what little I read last night has really helped me with today. So I think we are both doing pretty good at this point.

Carol Sue Congratulations on the $200 win. You really seem to do your gambling wisely.

I too am sleeping so much better lately although I don't really know why. I think it must be the fact that I don't have any real stress at this time. Figuring out the best way for me to do IF is helping even more to help with the de-stressing. I know there is always something, but hope things can stay like this for a while. I am going to enjoy it while it lasts. Enjoy being with your DGS.

mad You are doing great. I've learned a lot from your sharing and am back to reading the book. I hope I can eventually do EF as I think it would really be good for me. I think I might could do a 24 hr fast a couple of days a week, but I might have to work up to it and do it on a day that I can stay home. I like the fact that he gave different ways to do it. If your traveling is like when we travel, I always found it easy to fast because I was in a car and usually only did 2MAD with an occasional snack. However, I have to say that the last few times we made trips, I would plan on a snack and start to eat it and never have it. I think once you get used to not eating one that you aren't tempted that often.

Baby sister called DS and me today. They were having problems with that woman harassing them and had to change their phones and for now she has deactivated her FB account. I am going to go get her on the 8th to go with us for Daddy's nerve test and then I will go get her on the 9th and take her to our beautician for a perm. We are going to make it a day together and go see Daddy after she is done with her perm. Not sure if we are going to do Thanksgiving or Christmas but she said her boys could get Daddy and bring him to the house so he could be with us. I think they are just having to g et things settled. They still have to go back for dr appoints and one business deal and hopefully they won't have to go back any more. I'm just glad she called.

My breakfast this morning was similar to one of Dr. Fung's samples this morning. I had my Greek yogurt with 1/2 banana and I put chia seeds and cinnamon in it. His suggestion was berries and flaxseed. Lunch was tilapia, salad, mixed veggies and 70% Cocoa candy for dessert. The 70% Cocoa dark chocolate was one of the dessert suggestions in his book. Very satisfying a filling.

Thanks Mad. I have regular oats, but I did get some steel cut oats at Walmart the other day. Dr. Fung shows different foods for breakfast which are foods I like including the steel cut oats and 2 eggs and bacon. I just couldn't see eating them together for breakfast. He has them suggested for 2 breakfast on different day. I figure I can have the eggs & bacon on days I want and the steel cut oats on other days and have a nice variety.

Trish, now you made me hungry for Talapia. I have some in the freezer, but DH won't eat it so I can only make it for myself if there's something else I can make for him, like steak or hamburgers. I always have those things in the freezer as they are quick to defrost and cook. The first time I had Talapia was at Dennys. I liked it so I started buying bags of it frozen from Walmart. They had it on the menu at another restaurant we used to go to but they had some type of sauce on theirs and I didn't like the sauce. I just cook it on my grill pan with salt, pepper and olive oil spray.

I don't have a lot of patience with DGS like DH does. I never had children of my own and don't really know how to deal with them. I like them to sit quietly and behave and 10 year old boys don't do that. LOL His antics get the dog all riled up and then he starts barking and growling. He is going to want to stay up late and DH lets him. He won't get his jammies on or brush his teeth when I tell him. I really can't wait until this is over with. What a terrible Grandma I am. LOL

Good morning friends: had a treat last night and enjoyed a hard cider while watching a movie. I am off to the farmers market soon, and we will get some maple syrup to take to Scotland for gifts where we stay. Also a few veggies and some meat for the next few days, and maybe fish. We have a great fishmonger there and his wife who works with him is a former neighbour.
I got a big dreaded job out of the way yesterday. I have renew my professional registration every year and that means gathering all the paperwork and certifications, the certificates from courses etc and inputting everything into the computer. Takes hours, but the deadline is October 1st, and I would rather be getting ready for my trip. So finally got that done, but telling myself no supper (I was doing OMAD) and no hot tub until it was done. Ahhh bureaucracy, what a good thing to have behind you.
So now to start getting things ready to pack. Also very glad I am not working this week as it turns out with the trade because of my sore arm. Thats been good fortune in its way because now I have all week to get ready. I think the only task left besides packing is to get some British pounds at the currency exchange. Its a LOT cheaper there than at the airport or through the credit card and ATM. We will mostly use it for meals. I figure 1 meal out per day, (supper) and make our own at the B&B for breakfast or lunch. (I plan to to 2MAD most of the time, but make it while the others have breakfast, or do breakfast and supper. )
And if the pubs and restaurants don't seem to have food I can eat, I can go to the grocers and get stuff to cook since the airbnb will have a kitchen.
DD is now on the first part of her holiday, scuba diving , and will meet us after we get to Glasgow.
I guess I'm starting to get really excited.

Carol: I laugh hearing about adventures with DGS. If you are not a kiddie person, thats no biggie, and its not always easy to be patient. But just remember he is being normal, (and you seem to get that) and that it won't last forever, and he will be too old to want to spend time with Grandparents before you know it. I for one love the kid thing, looking forward to taking the littles to the pumpkin patch tomorrow. Do you have some fun things out and about in town to do? Kids get more "hyper" when bored and unable to run of their high energy. Is there a zoo, or a sport thing? rock climbing gym to take him to? Hope you get through the weekend with some happy memories.

Trish: glad you are re-reading TOC. I am finding a few more people on the support sites who are not doing crazy long fasts or KETO, or strict LCHF eating. Many of us are doing fine. I am probably closer to LCHF than you would be happy with, but still eat lots of veggies, which we both love, a little fruit and occasional grain. But a healthy diet with a smaller eating window will also lead to weight loss. If you can slip in a 22 hour fast with OMAD (and a good feasting at the OMAD) once or twice a week, once you have gotten used to IF, that will kick start a good weight loss and blood sugar drop. For the first while thats what I did, didn't go beyond IF for a bit, and I still can't fast and do EF for long. Maybe I never will. Maybe I never have to!

Sorry to be so long, just feeling chatty today.

Wannabehealthy 09-29-2018 08:24 AM

Mad, DGS spends a lot more time with his other grandparents as they have other grandchildren and know how to interact with kids. They live closer and they do camping and a lot of other things to interest DGS. He is going spelunking with the Cub Scouts today and won't be coming to our house until 4PM. Then dinner, and DH wants to take him to the car cruise so that doesn't really leave a lot of time for other activities. I know being with us is probably boring to him, but it's only because his parents are having that party that is not appropriate for him to be around.

It was chilly in our house this morning so I baked the brownies right away to allow the oven to warm up the house. Now I will shower and finish up last minute cleaning. I don't think DGS will notice if my house is clean or dirty but I will know.

pattygirl63 09-29-2018 01:20 PM

Mad Thanks for the advise. I think that I can do a longer fast once in a while and now that I've read what I have in IOC, I am more comfortable with my woe. I hope to make today just a 2MAD, however, I kind of go by how I feel later as to whether I will eat a snack or not. Your trip sounds exciting. I think you will do really good. For one thing I notice you usually have a lot of activity (exercise) when you travel and that will help you a lot.

Carol Sue I loved having children around when I was younger when I had the energy and was able to interact with them, but I don't have the energy today that I had back then. I wanted to spend a lot of time with my little great GS when I moved here but they don't have time to bring him and I don't have energy to keep him by myself. Such a shame. Kids these days want to be on some sort of game etc and I don't have those any more. I used to sit on the floor with my kids and grandkids, but can't do that any more.

Today is WI and I am down 1.6 lb this week. My FBS is still in low 150's with an occasional drop in high 140s. I'm sure that is due to not doing the bike exercise. I start out good at on Saturdays but I now need to make it more days. I only did it 2 days last week so will try to do better this week. I sleep good but just can't seem to get any more than 6 or 7 hrs at night. Another thing that would be better if I would exercise more often.

Dr. Fung says give this a month so I am doing to do my best to bike exercise 3 or 4 days a week minimum at 20 minutes and do more 16:8 IF. If I can just accomplish that for 1 month that would really be great.

Y'all have a great day.

Wannabehealthy 09-29-2018 01:53 PM

I think you are doing great, Trish, and so is Mad!

When I was in my 20s, I took my niece and nephew a lot of places with me. They were very well behaved by threat of their mother. I would never have told her if they did not behave, but she told them they had to be good, so they were afraid to be bad. My brother and his wife were very strict with them. That was back when kids were afraid to not listen. Now days the kids make the rules, it seems.

I know it won't be long until my DGS does not want to come to stay at our house, but for things like this party he has no choice. Pap Pap does like to play with him. DH has computer games that DGS does not have at home so it's something different for him. It's so funny! DH has slot machines on the computer and he lets DGS play them. He is turning him into a gambler at 10 years old. LOL DGS doesn't realize it's gambling. It's just a computer game to him.

There are places online where you can use your credit card to gamble online. If DH ever figures out how to do that I'm in big trouble. So far, all he knows how to do on the computer is YouTube. He is really into gambling. We take a certain amount of money with us and when that's gone, we come home. On Thursday I went into the Food Court with my Kindle. I didn't spend any of my money until I realized he had won some. That's when I went to that one machine and won $200. I stopped playing and took that home along with the rest of my money I hadn't spent. DH would keep playing until the money is gone if I let him. One of us has to have some common sense. LOL

pattygirl63 09-29-2018 02:56 PM

Carol Sue That is great that you can gamble with common sense. I'm not sure if I would do that or not. Maybe now hat I am older and have played lotto scratch offs, I think I would be wise. We were so excited when we got the Lotto here in TX and I used to play the scratch off tickets and most of the time when I would win I would spend my winnings on more tickets except one time when I won enough to pay a bill I needed to pay. However, I got in the habit of playing so much that one day I realized how many $1 tickets I had spent to win $5 or $10 and stopped because I suddenly understood that I was never ahead. Now the good tickets are so much more expensive that I don't play any more. I did have fun though. LOL!!!

I don't know how I ended this before I was finished.

Anyway, I started reading on Dr. Funds FB page again today and it was really informative and inspiring. They do a Facelift Friday on there and some people are taking pics of before when they started IF and how they looked on Friday. Some a week old or some more. It is amazing how these people have no flab or wrinkles. Definitely an encouragement to do IF especially at my age. I don't have a lot of wrinkles and I would definitely like to lose and still have none. Gives me the incentive to stay OP.

So I took a selfie today on my cell phone and saved it. On November 1st I will take another one and compare it. I don't do FB on my cell phone so will never put it on there, but it is for me to see the progress myself.

I also saw a discussion on Measuring Tape of Scales. Many of them don't use scales as their guideline. They use their clothes or their measuring tape with only a few using both. They said the scales lie. LOL where as the measuring tape gives you the whole picture. I've been trying to find one of my measuring tapes but can't find it yet, so will use the clothes and the selfies for now.

Wannabehealthy 09-29-2018 07:37 PM

Trish, I still use my scale and probably will, but I don't let it run my life. I can usually feel if I've lost weight.

I was never a gambler most of my life. When I met DH he played numbers with a bookie, but he only spent $3 - $4 a day. Once the lottery came to PA he started playing more and more. I feel that he spends more than he wins. When he does win, he gives the money to me to do what I want. I usually buy something we need for the house. The casino used to be just dog races and we never went there. Once they put slot machines in we started going and he got hooked. We don't spend more than we can afford, but it's more than I want to spend. So that's when I decided I would just take my Kindle and read and let him gamble. We do get a nice meal there and rarely have to pay anything for it. If they had free WIFI I could get online but I think they only have that for guests who are staying in the hotel.

My DGS is here and is playing his hand held game so he is quiet and content. Now we just have to get him to go to bed at a reasonable hour.

Wannabehealthy 09-29-2018 08:16 PM

DGS says he's tired already and it's only 8:15. He was up early this morning to go to the caverns and he is used to sleeping in on Saturdays. I will be so happy if he goes to bed early.

fatmad 09-29-2018 11:36 PM

Carol: one this I can do for or with the kids that takes no energy from me: go watch them play soccer. ( or whatever sport).
They will come over to say hi, ask me something, get a hug, and run off to play again. The big thing, they know I was there.

I don't get every week, and sometimes don't stay for the whole thing. But its just a time to be there.
Maybe even DH can go without you if he just wants to see more of him, or you if you want a little more relationship with him.
I can understand how having an active kid around is a bit much for older people. There will come a time when I feel that too, I'm sure.

Tonight I made pan fried fish. Used crushed pork rinds for the coating. Seasoned a little, and was delicious. the fresh haddock was great.
My recipe says to fully thaw and dry previously frozen fish. so dipped in egg and coated and fried. Yum

and tomorrow is the pumpkin patch!

fatmad 09-30-2018 09:24 AM

great sleep, which is lovely. I am sleeping half the night with the CPAP and half without. I am going to look up online to change pressures myself, since it won't get done at the sleep lab without a doc saying so. I guess I still have to go to the useless doc's appointment if I want a new CPAP. I don't think I am quite ready to give it up altogether. SO it comes to Scotland with me.
The scale was not upset with me for having some home made fries with my fish last night, instead of salad. I think I have been having just enough carbs through my fruit and veggies, that I do not have a rebound weight gain of water from the carbs when I do have them.

I am getting ready for the pumpkin patch this afternoon, so have a lovely Sunday. We have some light rain, but it will clear up, so should be a good autumn day

pattygirl63 09-30-2018 02:13 PM

I have 2 successful 8:16 IF days under my belt. They always say the 3rd day is tough to get through, but I really don't expect it to be. I just don't understand how eating a little more carbs works better for me as long as I stay within the 8 hrs. I think it is the healthy fiber. I'm not eating really high fiber, but I am eating more than usual. I made pizza yesterday and ate almost half of it, but I loaded my half with veggies and I always make a salad to go with it. I am trying to learn to eat more mindfully. I like wait and eat only if hungry and eat what I want (IE guideline), but eat until satisfied and then stop. That seems to be working very well.

Weight bounced up a tad from the sodium in the pizza which is normal for me, however the FBS was back down to 147 this morning. I'm not going to worry to much about the scales. For one thing I know that the scales always bounce a lot for me before I go down. I also remember being told years ago by WW you need to give a diet 2 weeks before expecting a loss. I feel very comfortable with this way of eating. I am pretty much using the GL diet along with IF with some IE guidelines. So I am sure this will work. I don't know if it will be slow loss or what, but what I do know is I'm eating healthier and any loss is good as long as my bs is getting better.

My main guidance I am taking from what is suggested on FB IDM support group is to use NSV to measure my success. They really stress the fact that the scales lie and that measuring tape is the best friend on this way of eating. I really believe the scale sabotages me and perhaps the measuring tape, loose clothes, etc will make things easier for me.

Pipsicle We are about neck in neck on our IF. I've been thinking of you as I'm tweaking what I'm doing. I hope you are having success as I think you are doing the same thing. We are going to make this.

Carol Sue and Mad I love being around my great nephews and great GS, but I just can't keep any of them any more. I'm not steady enough at this time to carry them so it is better for me to see them when their folks are around. I hope with exercise and weight loss that will change, but I would ve devastated if I ever dropped or fell with while holding one of them. We have gobs of movies for kids as we always bought them when the grands were little and I have a corner with toys for them, so entertaining them isn't a problem. My little GNephew who use to come over with his Mother loves dinosaurs. We have movies and toys about dinosaurs to keep him happy. The problem I have with some of the other even his little brother is that they meddle and you have to watch them constantly as they get into things that could harm them. So now I figure it is better for me to go see them or when they are a little older I could take them somewhere.

I got a new message from IDM about a new article Dr. Fung has that looks like it is about what to ignore about traditional diabetic recommendations. I saved it to read so I can see what he says.

Y'all have a blessed Sunday.

pattygirl63 09-30-2018 02:30 PM

Nothing new in the IDM article. It was discussing some new book or writing called Unf…. yourself. Not really sure what it says, but Dr. Fung uses it to show how the ADA and the CDA still sell the thought that we can eat white flour and sugar as diabetes which makes blood sugar worse. Then they recommend his books. It is good for people who are new to IDM and Dr. Fung.

Wannabehealthy 09-30-2018 08:17 PM

The experience with DGS was not what I expected. He has really calmed down since the last time he stayed with us and he listens so much better. I guess he's growing up.

Not much else is new with me. Still struggling with BS and weight. I'm just maintaining.
