My blood sugar spiked at bedtime last night. I don't really know why. I hope it wasn't the carbs in the veggies, but it could have been some onion rings I ate with DH. I didn't think they would do that, really. I didn't eat any bread, sweets or other starchy carbs. Anyway, I feel fat and bloated this morning but forced myself to get on the scale. Down another pound. 201 Yay! Yay! I am assuming the fat bloated feeling is from the fiber. So I had to take extra Glimiperide for the spike. I know if I continue to do that I will run out of meds.

I only slept for a few hours again last night. I woke up worrying about this blood pressure thing. I feel that my only option is to keep my eating in line and get back to exercising. I know.....the broken record, over and over. But these are things that will make positive improvements without adding more meds. If I don't do it, shame on me, I will have to face the consequences and it will be my own fault. So I think I just gave myself that smack I need.

Yesterday, when talking with my friend, she asked me why I don't want to exercise. This discussion made me realize that I do want to exercise. I want to want to. I know I feel so much better and my numbers are so much better. It's all right there. All I have to do is walk down the cellar steps. It's just getting myself to take the first step. If I set a good example, maybe DH will make some changes too.

I read over the info about the Mediterranean Diet. I even came across a post I made about it a long time ago. In it I said that it is not a weight loss diet as we know them, but a WOE followed by a geographical region, but you CAN lose weight on it if you try. It tells you the types of food to eat that are considered to be healthy, but not amounts. It contains some foods I like, but not all. I have found that eating foods that I like has a lot to do with my satiety and how much I eat. If I'm satisfied with what I ate, I am less likely to look for other things to eat. So this is my opinion on it, for what it's worth. We all have to choose what works for us.

[B]HI ALL; I got my final diagnosis and it was confirmed that I have diabetes. I was put on Metformin and Glyperide to bring down my sugars. At the time of my test(non fasting) my sugar was 408. It is not hovering in the mid to high 200's. At first I was scared but now all I am is motivated, because I know I can control if not beat this thing
I do feel very overwhelmed with all the new information and what I need to learn about diet and medicine and exercise and how all that works together.
Any good tips about diet would be welcomed. Also does anyone take natural supplements to help control your sugars,(cinnamon, apple cider vinegar)?
Wannabeheathy and Pattygirl63 . I live in Wimberley TX which is only about 15 miles from Kyle TX and about 2 hours from Waco.

Just a quick flyby. My pc is down. Learning a lot from Mediterranean book.

Carol Sue I agree it is not a diet. It is a WOE. I think it is a perfect way to Intuitively Eat. Similar in rule of eat when hungry and stop when satisfied.

Typing on kindle not my thing. Will be back when pc is working again.

Sorry to hear you are having pc problems, Trish. Hope you get it worked out soon. It's hard to get on the smaller electronics, especially when you are not used to it.

I finally got some exercise in today and hope I can keep it up on a regular basis. I stayed on plan with my food but did get a few temptations that I avoided. Upped my water a bit. One day at a time. I'm a little hungry now at bedtime but will abstain and hope I don't get hungry in the middle of the night. I really want a bite of something sweet, candy, but I'm hoping the longer I don't give in the better it will get. I have been entering my food on MFP and it transfers the information over to my Fitbit. I like that, but the way I have my Fitbit set up it doesn't allow me as many calories, so it shows that I went over each day, but as long as I continue to lose weight I will just continue as I am. I do not want to get to such a deficit that I have hunger. I am around 1400 calories and I feel that what I ate was healthy food.

Hi Nikkitx73! Sorry to hear of your diagnosis, but it's important to know so you can take care of it. I was overwhelmed too, because I had no idea and was in the hospital for heart surgery when they found out. So I got a double whammy. I knew nothing about diabetes and most of what I learned I read in books or online.

For me, the best thing is limiting starchy carbs. It is recommended that you test 2 hours after each meal to see how the food you ate affected your blood sugar. If you get a spike, then you eliminate or limit that particular food. I make a lot of mistakes. I think I'll eat a little bit of something, then a little bit becomes a lot, and then I'm in trouble. It's not easy to make dietary changes, but I believe it's the best way. Exercise is helpful too, even if it's just taking a walk after meals. I can try to answer any questions you have, but each person is different and you do need to find what works for you. I try to remember that I do not want to lose my toes or my eyesight to keep eating in line. And, of course, weight loss is very helpful, but also difficult. Maybe your doctor will send you to a diabetes educator or nutritionist for training. They didn't do that for me, but I was recovering from heart surgery so they felt that was more important.

Here is a good place to start. Go to this website http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/ and read all the sections. Bookmark the site so you can refer back to it. It will give you a wealth of information.

Good luck to you.

I am using my old computer until DH gets my regular one fixed. It is a lot slower than my newer one. This will be quick because I have to get up early to go by the doctor's office for lab before I go to the beauty shop. Not sure what anyone plans to do tomorrow after beauty shop. I know Daddy will want to get out but he told me to be careful eating out at restaurants because of the flue epidemic so I'm not sure what he and DS will decide.

I am not using MFP right now as I am going to use the Mediterranean guidelines along with IE. I've done that today. My FBS was 148 and weight was the same. I decided to only check FBS today because I decided I wanted the banana with peanut butter and cinnamon with a cup of coffee. I really planned to eat breakfast later, but I got busy and by the time I realized I had forgotten to eat I just decided to wait until lunch because DH wanted chili dogs today. I made us a salad and then ate the chili hot dogs like I wanted. The rest of the day was just snacking trying to eat wisely.

Carol Sue I buy HEB's pkg of Veggie Medley which has lettuce, and what looks like some kind of greens with radishes, snow peas and carrots in it. I take some of that and add tomato, cucumber and celery then whatever dressing I want with it that day. I usually use Light Ranch dressing but once in a while I use Olive Garden bottled dressing. I have this salad everyday. Sometimes I add red, yellow or orange bell peppers. I haven't been using that but the Mediterranean says to eat color foods (other diets have used the phrase rainbow colors) along with the health benefits. I will share that later when I have time.

I plan to use those guidelines of the foods that I want to start eating.

Nikki Right now I can't remember where Kimberly is, but I will check it out. The name if familiar, but for some reason it slips my mind. Sorry you were diagnosed with diabetes. We will try to help you. You can take care of it and keep it under control.

I better get to bed. Catch you tomorrow.

Trish, I am glad you have another computer to fall back on. I sometimes read the forum when I'm out somewhere with my tablet, but I find it very hard to post on it. I know some people are used to it but I am not.

Your salad sounds good, even though I struggle to eat salad. I prefer to have hot/warm cooked veggies rather than raw. I have to be in the mood for a salad and prefer them out rather than home made. I rarely have a nice variety of salad veggies on hand. My friend Carol eats a salad like yours every day.

I am down another lb today, right at 200. I have been staying on plan for several days now with an emphasis on eating less and nothing between meals. I think my calories are running around 1400 and under 1500 usually allows me to lose, but I expect that number to go down in time. Right now I'm getting that whoosh you get when you first start out. Yesterday I finally did a good overnight fast. No food at all after dinner except a cup of tea. We ate around 4:30 and I ate a full meal. Grilled pork chops, corn and Rice-a-Roni side. I had a small portion of that and put the leftovers in the fridge. I really wanted to try going to bed on a completely empty stomach with no bedtime snack to see what it would do to FBS. I forgot to test when I first got up, but after 2 cups of coffee it's at 175. I'm not happy with that. I don't know if I'm right or not, but with DP the liver dumps glucose, and with less stored glucose, the release should be lower. Maybe the idea is to eat so as to use the glucose rather than store it so there's not a lot there to release in the AM hours. I don't know. Trish, do you remember back when I was eating 1 egg at bedtime? That was the only time my blood sugar would be the same in the morning as it was at bedtime. So maybe that's the solution for me. Last night when I went to bed I was a little hungry and I wanted to eat either an artichoke heart or a pickled egg. I stayed in bed, and this morning my hunger was gone. I also didn't wake up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, although I did drink a bottle of water in the evening. I never used to pay attention to these things like I'm doing now. I can have my pickled egg and artichoke heart this morning because DH has sweet rolls and will not be cooking breakfast for us.

I hope to do some exercise again today, but weekends are a little tricky. DH usually likes to do a lot of running around and the weather is going to warm up for the weekend. We will probably be around 60 by Monday. It has been too cold to melt the snow, and our back yard takes a while to melt because it's in the shade. The yard across the street will be clear and we will still have some piles of snow.

So far neither of us have any signs of the flu. I rarely get the flu, but do get colds. None so far this year. In the past, I used to get sick in Feb or March rather than over the winter. I hope it passes us by this year. We really spend a lot less time in the public than we used to.

How are you doing, Nikki? And I wonder how Fatmad is doing. I hope she's adjusting better to her new home. She was struggling with it the last time she posted.

Yesterday, President Trump was in Pittsburgh to campaign for someone who is running for office. He gave a speech at a manufacturing company about an hour from me. Also, a young woman came to buy an item DH had advertised on Craigslist, and when she called, that was the area she said she would be coming from. I wonder if she had been out there to see him speak. I don't know if outsiders were permitted into the building or if it was just company employees, but they did say there were supporters and protesters outside the building. I didn't see or talk to the woman when she came. I was cooking dinner and DH took care of the transaction. Never thought about it yesterday but today I googled the company name and realized where it was. I guess it could have been a coincidence. Her cell phone number showed she was from much further east of us, in a different area code.

NikkiTX73 I googled Wimberley and Kyle, TX and now I remember seeing the signs when we traveled to San Antonio one time when DH and I came to TX to visit when we lived in SC. Do you ever get up this way?

Rennie Good to see you. I have taken Januvia in the past but it didn't seem to do anything for me. I've never heard of tradjzenta. Is it a new medicine? I will look it up though as I'm looking for something to switch to help me get my bs lower depending on what my A1c is this time as I'll be surprised if it is still a 5 range since I was on Trulicity back then but my insurance isn't covering it any more.

Carol Sue Yes, I do remember the 1 egg helping your with a lower FBS the next day. I'm so glad you are down to 200 lbs. You have been there so many times and I pray you are able to go under this time. It would be so encouraging to you and help you feel like you can keep going down. I know because I get down so close to going under 210 and then I gain it back. I'm hoping to change that.

I took the Low-Carb dieting for dummies book with me to read in the lab waiting room. I had plenty of time to read what I wanted to know. The last time I went to get blood drawn I was the only one in the lab waiting room. This time there was hardly any room to sit. Any way, I have the way I'm going to eat. This plan isn't much different than the WW Freestyle. In fact, it is so similar that I have to wonder if they got a lot of there ideas from this book.

Here is what I learned about the foods of color and the benefits of each from the Mediterranean Diet book.

Blue & Purple foods lower risk of some cancers, improves memory and healthy aging. Examples... blueberries, eggplants, purple grapes and plums.

Green foods lower risk of some cancers, helps with healthy vision, strong bones and teeth. Examples... broccoli, green peppers, honeydew melon, kiwi, salad greens and spinach.

Red lowers risk of heart disease and some cancers and improves memory function. Examples...pink watermelon, red bell peppers and strawberries.

White lowers risk of heart disease and some cancers. Examples... bananas, garlic and onions

Yellow\orange lowers risk of heart disease and some cancers, good for healthy vision and a stronger immune system. Example... carrots, oranges, yellow and orange peppers and yellow watermelon.

I am taking the examples from this list and the info from the Low-Carb Diet and going to use it with IE\IF. The Low carb book says eat 3 to 5 starchy carbs each day which is 45 to 75 g. She says the carbs from the veggies and fruit that are low glycemic are free foods. In fact, she gives a list of free foods on her list which I am going to use to make up my menus for DH and me. I went to the store today and bought some of the fruits and veggies and will start it today as best as I can.

I can use MFP to do this to watch my calories because even though I can have these foods as freebies, I still have to watch calories intake.

Hi Rennie. I'm so very glad to see you here, but I'm sorry to hear the reason why. An A1c of 11 IS pretty high and you do need to lower it. My main suggestion is low carb eating and exercise, but I know your schedule doesn't allow for much time to exercise, and I believe you are doing shift work, which is hard on the body. I take Metformin and Glimiperide. You need to be careful with the Glimiperide because it can cause a rapid drop in blood sugar. One night when I first started taking it I woke up not feeling well and my blood sugar was 44. I took a piece of hard candy then checked in 15 minutes and it was in the 70s, so I was OK. But it was scary. I would advise you to make sure someone in your family who still lives with you knows how to check your blood sugar and what to do about it if it is too low or too high in case of emergency.

I know that you know a lot about healthy eating and I trust that you will get this under control. You know you can always come here and ask questions, but also listen to your doctor. They might also send you to a nutritionist or diabetes educator.

Trish, I really like the lab I go to but I heard recently that if I go to a different one I don't have a copay. I like the idea of no copay, but the lab I go to I'm right in and out all the time. I'm not so sure how this other one will be.

I think 45 to 75 carb grams is reasonable, but I just go according to the carb number that shows up when I track, and that includes all carbs, including the small amount from veggies. I think you will do very well if you stay in that range.

We went to the casino today and ate the buffet, but you know I mostly stick with meat and veggies. I did have my small portion of delicious mac and cheese and a small portion of sweet potato casserole, which I'm sure had sugar in it. I did a lot of walking around the casino. When I wanted a beverage, I made it a point to go to the stand farthest away to get the extra walking in. I no longer eat the pretzels and crackers in the car on the way home. I realized that I was not eating from hunger but from habit, so I stopped. When we got home my blood sugar was 104. That's very good for me! Now I'm having my scrambled egg and going off to bed, so we will see what the meter says in the morning.

Tomorrow I'm going to a seminar at our local medical center for hernia screening. It was advertised in the paper so I signed up. I have that bulge in my abdomen that developed after my surgery. It does not hurt, but I heard that not all hernias hurt. I showed it to my PCP and he said he thinks it's just a weakness in the abdominal wall. The surgeon who did my surgery is no longer in PA, but this seminar is being held by the same surgical group, so I will explain to them what happened and see what they think. I just want to make sure that it's not something I have to worry about. If it's not going to cause me trouble, I will just live with it. No big problem.

Rennie I looked up Tradjenta and it must be a new medicine. I doubt my insurance will cover it and it is probably expensive if they would. I think the ingredient is the same as what is in Victoza. I've decided not to take the Victoza because of some of the side effects, but then my A1c usually is in the 6's.

I'm up late since I washed clothes and have to wait until my hang up clothes are dry. I can put the fold up clothes in and go to bed since I won't fold them until tomorrow.

I didn't track my food on MFP because I'm not worrying about the carbs in the free foods (Low-Carb Diet for Dummies calls it the green light foods). I have a worksheet DH set up for me years ago that I can use to track my food by type of food like fruit, veggies, meat, dairy and starches. I will look for it tomorrow and make some copies and I will write down all that I eat, but only count the starchy carbs.

We did go out to eat for breakfast and I got my regular Bacon/Cheese/egg taquito. Our lunch was very carby (I didn't start new plan 100% today) because I didn't have time to take anything out for lunch before I left for lab. So we had some of the fish sticks DH bought and air-fried fries and onion rings. I finished off the onion rings so those are gone. We had our regular salad and I had a serving of Normandy frozen veggies. DH had left over green peas instead of the Normandy veggies.

Tonight instead of cooking anything, I made DH and me a fruit bowl each of strawberries, blueberries and blackberries. I put Lie cool whip on his and I added plain Greek yogurt with Splenda, cinnamon and some of the Lite cool whip for flavor since I really don't like Greek yogurt. It tasted pretty good. I read that I need to be eating it so that I can keep my immune system healthy to ward off yeast/candida problems. I think it was WebMD that had something about that or I could have read it in the Mediterranean Diet book. I don't remember. I got hungry for something again later, but I stopped eating about 7:15 pm which meant I had stayed within the 8 hr IF eating so I didn't want to mess that up.

So while I didn't stay within the 75 g starchy carbs today, I am pleased that I walked a good hour at the store and I did IF. 2 out of 3 isn't too bad. I am happy with the way the day went.

Carol Sue When DH and I were in the other hospital system when we first moved here, we could go in to have our lab work done any time we wanted to on a certain day they assigned us. I liked that because we could just go in, sign in and had very little wait. This one system we have an appointment when we have to be there. I'm not sure but I think Daddy's system goes by appointments to.

I too have been thinking about fatmad. I hope she is doing okay. She was not as happy with her move as she had hoped. I hope she will check in soon.

I think the dryer has stopped so I'm going to hang them up and go to bed. It is 12:29. I'm going to try to get to bed by 1 am.

Hi ladies and gents,

I had forgotten there was this forum. I'm Lisa and 3 months ago, I was diagnosed with type 2. My nurse practitioner put me on metformin and a low carb eating plan.

I'm doing really well. I've lost 26 lbs, so far. The metformin works like magic. Took me a while time get used to it though.

I'll post again tomorrow. It's really early here. Sweet dreams.

Lisa Welcome. Glad to have you with us. Please do come back and share with us. You are doing great. Congratulations for the 26 lbs lost. You are on the right track. You can get this under control. I've done it in the past and then stopped doing what I was doing. I am working to get back there myself.

I wasn't going to use MFP, but I changed my mind. For one thing my weight is 219.4 and FBS 155. I'm not happy with the weight gain. However, when I went to put my weight into MFP, I was thrilled to learn that I had lost .7 lbs since the last time I was there. I was glad to see my FBS was better today as well.

I decided to use MFP because it helps me to exercise and it helps me to keep up with the carb count. All I have to do when I get the total is add up the starchy carbs to stay between 45 - 75 g.

I like to go on MFP and make my plan for the day. I have my plan today. Today I will have a total of 119 g carbs, but 53 (4.4 servings) are from starchy carbs. I am not a high fat eating person, however, I am trying to eat more good fats (omega 3). Today I had a fourth of an avocado with my eggs. I will add .5 oz of nuts to my yogurt and fruit this evening. My calories are 1433 and fiber 14 g. I will probably add more fiber but I will do it a little at a time. I'm thinking maybe that is why I had potty issues in the past because I ate too much too fast.

And I've done 20 minutes on the bike. I know my doctor wants me walking, but I need the recumbent bike for my back, knees and strengthening my legs. I figure my walking will be at the store on the days I meet Daddy and DS for breakfast because I spend almost if not more than an hour walking around the store and I don't walk slow because I have my list and know what I want and walk quickly. I remember reading in the 2nd South Beach diet book that fast, slow, fast is better exercise and I figure that I certainly do that when shopping.

I'm still trying to get my computer working. I am not sure what has happened to this keyboard on this old computer because some of the symbol keys are something else. LOL Sure makes typing interesting. Don't know if I will have to take the newer one in to see if it can be fixed or if DH can wipe it clean and reload everything.

It is a pretty day here but we don't have any plans. Hope everybody has a great day.
