Well, weather wise it was a nasty Easter. I think we got around a foot of rain in two days. I still had a great birthday though. (Batman vs Superman was horrid) The hibachi place we went to was delicious and very nice. I over indulged both days, but that's okay. My stomach hates me right now, but back on plan. I did manage to see 198 on Saturday before I went nuts LOL. Popcorn, ice cream, fried rice, cake, sweet potato casserole..... I'm just happy I put on 1 lb and not 10!!!

My fasting blood sugar on Saturday was 77 (which I think is actually really too low). I've been too chicken to test it since my birthday sugar fiasco LOL. Probably not so great anymore. :| I go back to the Dr. on Thursday to see my blood test results that I took on Friday. I'm crossing fingers they are good, but good or not, I think I'm going to ask to stay on met a while longer as I believe it's helping with other issues.

My focus today is getting back on my WOE and getting rid of this bloat. Blah. I'm going to finish off the shake mix this week as I hate wasting money. It'll help me get back on track with my calories at least.

Fickle I don't know if I wished you a Happy Birthday or not, so Happy Belated Birthday. Congratulations on seeing 198 lbs Saturday. You got that girl. You will see it again.

I hope everyone had a nice Easter weekend. Ours was rather quiet. We went to early service, went out for breakfast and home and I slept off and on throughout the day. These mornings of getting up to get DGS off to school tires me out since I don't get sleepy to go to bed until my regular bedtie and have to make myself go to bed then. But if it he graduates from college with his degree that is what matters. We have come too far to let him throw it away if we can. It is just the timing of staying up with DH when he comes alive so we can talk about the new house.

We emailed a copy of the changes to the house plan that we want to the builders realtor and now waiting for her to send us how much the price will be with those changes or if we will have back off on some of the things we want done. If we come to an agreement then we will send her a check this weekend to get things started. My sister and her husband went to see a house for sale with the floor plan we are using, but making changes. She sent me a picture taken from the street. She said she loved the openness of it and I love the looks of the outside. We will go sometime the end of next week to pick things out so they will know exactly what we want in the house.

Well, my carby weekend added 1 lb to my weight loss for this week and I too am glad it was just 1 lb.

Today is a busy day, but I am back to low carb eating again today. Not going Atkins low carb, but I am going to keep carbs between 60 to 70 a day and except for my toast in the morning, the carbs will mostly come from veggies and a small amount of fruit. I also lowered my calories on MFP by 100 pts down to 1400 calorie limit. I mostly stay around 1200 calories any way.

After reading a book about a diabetic preacher and how he really explains his diabetic journey this weekend and how he low carbs and some of his reasoning on some issues that many disagree on, I have decided that 70 grams of carbs is a range I can live with. He basically just comes right out bluntly and says that you have to decided how long you want to live on this earth and then decided what changes you would have to make to expect to live that long. Then the big decision boils down to "is if the changes you have to make is worth doing". He seems to feel low carb is the only real way to eat for a diabetic if they want to live long healthy life. So to him it comes down to 2 choices a to make if you are a diabetic. You have to either decide to live and eat low carb or continue eating the way you did to be a diabetic and well we know how that one goes. I don't know why, but I think I had to hear that. So I choose to do what it takes to live as healthy as I possibly can. So I am back OP today.

DH has eye exam for glasses today so we are going out to eat at Golden Corral. It is faster and we can work in eating before his appointment. You know, you really can eat low carb and stay OP at Golden Corral or any buffet. I did it for years when I ate low carb before I went back to my old habits. Now that I have set my mind to this I'll eat a salad, steamed veggies and raw. I think the roast beef is the only thing they have that isn't breaded so I'll eat that. They do have baked chicken which is coated with sweet bbq sauce so that is out and their baked fish isn't all that tasty to me and if it has been sitting for a while it gets tough on one side. And of course I will stay clear of the desserts and other high carb foods. I have my mind set to determined to do this, psyched myself up for it so to speak, so I am good to go.

I've been thinking about our upcoming trip to TX. DH told me the other day he was thinking Cracker Barrel, Cracker Barrel, Cracker Barrel while on the road. That will be great. We will eat 2 breakfasts and 2 dinners going and coming back making 4 meals on the road. So staying OP will be easy. And I will take my lc snacks with me as well.

Y'all have a great day.

Ooh Cracker Barrel. I love those. It's a traveling tradition with my family too. Supposedly we're getting one built this year sometime nearby. Of course I said I'd eat at IHOP all the time too if we ever got one and then we did, and I've eaten there 5 times in 8 years LOL!

Our Golden Corral does steak and grilled meats as well as the normal fare. I don't like the fish there either (it's too soggy). It is easy to LC there, but for some reason my hubby just never wants to go anymore. Used to be his favorite place, but after his parents passed, I think it just dredges up too many memories.

Thanks for the birthday wishes. Good luck with the house changes. Your low carb plan sounds about what I plan on transitioning too in another 10 lbs. I do better around 50-70 carbs myself as I can easily over do it on veggies (curse you brussel sprouts).

Well, last post today I promise, but.....

Just got off the phone with my doc. His first question was, "Have you lost weight?" I was like, yep, 30 lbs in 2 months. He then goes, "well your blood work says that is obvious. You've gone from extremely high blood sugar to normal, possibly even a little too low." He lowered my met dose from 2000mg to 500 twice a day.

I am beyond ecstatic. All my hard work and I've just gotten an amazing pay off. He stressed this wasn't the end, I had to continue to eat right and I still have a good 48 lbs to lose, but it's a good start. I'm so happy with myself.

Fickle YAY!!! Great news!!! And great job!!!

I did great at Golden Corral. We go so early that there isn't too any protein options for me, but I just hit the veggies raw and steamed. Walked right past the starchy foods and the desserts and it didn't even phase me at all. No desire for them whatsoever.

I am reading the book Carol Sue told us about by Dr. Fuhrman. After reading the other book and then reading this one and how some doctors treatment diabetes is really scary. I am reading this to my DH and hoping I can get him to work at this more so he can get off some of the meds that he is taking. According to this doctor, one of DH medicines will only make him gain weight and make the diabetes worse. I am absolutely convinced this is the only way to get my fasting blood sugar under control.

DH has cataracts. The optometrist said new glasses would help him to see some better, but he suggested that he go to an Ophthalmologist to get it taken care of. Now we are thinking about when we will go on our trip. Not sure if we will put off going until after the surgeries or go first and have it done after we return. Optometrist said he could go a little longer but not to wait too long. We decided to not get the glasses as the girl said that he might not need anything but reading glasses after the surgeries and DH had me cancel my appointment because he things we both should see the ophthalmologist. So one more thing on the agenda to do before moving.

Fickle, that is so great, your work is paying off.

You should be really pleased with yourself. And you feel the effects of overdoing it and going off plan, so that will help you to get back on plan, when you realize you feel better.
I am definitely there. Had a few little easter eggs last night. There were a few left today, I didn't eat any, and took them over to a friends' children who hadn't had any candy all weekend. (with mama's permission of course). That was along with the easter toys and games I had for them. SO a little NSV, that I wasn't even tempted by them.
Stayed on plan for points today, so pretty pleased for myself.

Our weather on Easter couldn't have been better. It was definitely not typical March weather for PA. The day before and after were cold, and it's still too cold to be sitting outside unless it's bright sun. We had a good day.

p.a. I am wondering if I would get back to exercising like I should be if I could get back to the way my BS was when I was first diagnosed. I talk a good talk, but am not following through like I should be.

Fickle
, I am so happy for you with your weight loss and great results at the doctor. And Happy Birthday to you, a little late. 30 lbs is nothing to sneeze at.

Mad, you are doing so well, too, staying OP.

Trish, I need to make an appointment with the opthomologist, too. As diabetics, we should be doing that every year. I have been putting it off for years since I developed the hole in my macula, but it's not going to go away, so I need to go and get the care I need. I hope it's not too late for me. At that time, I was told I had a cararact starting in the left eye and don't know how much farther it has progressed, or if it started in the other eye as well.

I have not been on the scale since Easter because I know I did a lot of damage, including yesterday. I am feeling it. I hope to get back OP today.

I'm glad you're enjoying the books I recommended. I think Dr Fuhrman's plan can be done even with a bit more animal protein than he recommends. I don't plan on giving up meat altogether. I believe that getting a wide variety of vegetables is key to better health overall.

My friend who is in denial with her diabetes is starting to have some kidney problems that are causing some edema. She still doesn't see it as a diabetes side effect and is taking a natural diuretic given to her by a chiropractor. I am keeping my mouth shut so as not to alienate her. I feel that I should show her what good diet and exercise can do instead of just telling her.

The only buffet we go to is at the casino. They have roast beef, roasted chicken, grilled steak, chicken and pork chops, along with baked fish and peel and eat shrimp. It is very easy for me to eat very low carb there and I love it, but I still eat too much, and too much of a good thing can still spike blood sugar. I have to kept telling myself that.

I'm off to the store and DH wants to get a haircut. I will be back later.

Well, I will try this again. Had a long message typed out and lost it. May not be as long this time.

Fatmad I agree about realizing the foods I think I just had to have Easter not only didn't make me feel good, but it also didn't taste as good as I thought it would either. Great on taking the extra to the little one who didn't have any. Good NSV under your belt.

Carol Sue Yes you need to get your eyes checked. Optometrist told DH that the longer you let it go the harder it is to remove them.

I am amazed at the things I've learned from the 2 books. I realize why I should be glad that my doctor doesn't give me anything but Metformin. I now agree with him, but I'm also very concerned about the meds he has DH on. I cannot and will not follow Dr. Fuhrman's plan because I have no desire to be a vegetarian. For one thing, I don't like soy products so I need the protein from meat. I do like the other book and I like the way he got his bs under control. He doesn't cut some things out, but he does seem to be sure to eat foods with good fiber. He is good about explaining some of the trade offs he made. I like that because the bread I use has 5 g of fiber. I am trying to keep fiber fruits in my diet as well as long as it doesn't keep me from getting the bs down. I believe this is something I can turn into a lifestyle of eating.

I did have a problem with Metformin last week and almost decided not to take it until I talked to Daddy and he said that he cannot drink milk any more and has to drink the lactose free milk. I realized that just maybe it was the milk that I've been drinking so I've stopped drinking milk and will keep taking the Metformin.

Having a good day so far. Food tracked on MFP for today and main exercise is done for the day... 30 minutes of recumbent bike done.

Oh, I meant to share the results of my eating OP even at Golden Corral yesterday. When I eat there, my weight is always 1 or 2 lbs up. According to MFP, that is probably because they use a lot of salt. Even though I wasn't eating any sugar or starchy foods, MFP showed that I was getting a lot of salt when I ate the roast beef.

I didn't gain any weight. I still weighed this morning exactly what I weighed yesterday. This is a great accomplishment for me.

Carol Sue I also wanted to comment on your statement that
Quote:
It is very easy for me to eat very low carb there and I love it, but I still eat too much, and too much of a good thing can still spike blood sugar.
Your statement made me remember that I read in Overcoming Runaway Blood Sugar that he said that if you overeat that you will get a blood sugar spike. That is a good point for us to know because I've always had the problem of people saying I had to eat more than I wanted and when I wasn't hungry that I had to eat. (Remember you and I didn't eat 3 meals a day growing up?) I always said when I was made to think that I had to eat 3 meals and/or snacks is when I started gaining weight. Then it became a habit and now I'm learning that eating only when I'm hungry is the right way to eat. It bugs me to know that if everyone had left me alone, I would not be overweight today battling to get back to normal eating.

I don't always eat 1200 calories in a day and I've decided that I'm not going to just because someone thinks I should eat that much.

Have a good day.

Trish, when I was growing up I did eat 3 meals a day, but nothing else. There was no snack food, not even fruit. My mother could only afford to buy the food for our meals, and we ate it all because we knew there would be no food until the next meal. It was when I lived alone that I started only eating breakfast and lunch, and that worked better for me then. I was probably eating a big lunch which kept me from being hungry in the evening.

I too cannot follow Dr Fuhrman's plan, but what did you think of how he explained the different vegetables and what each one does for your body. I always thought of "vegetables" as 1 healthy group, but knowing the effect the different ones has made me start eating a wider variety. I thought the book was worth it just for that information.

From what you have told me about your A1c, I never thought it was high enough to need more than just Metformin. You probably don't have any high post prandial blood sugars. I am still not taking as much Glimiperide as is prescribed. I would have to eat more carbs to keep it from giving me a hypo, and I don't intend to do that. When I check my blood sugar before meals and it's good, it makes me more aware of not eating carbs at that meal so I won't need the glimiperide.

Yesterday we got a Subway Sandwich to split for lunch. I threw away the bun and put the filling in a bowl of salad. It was so good, like a chef's salad.

I'm still afraid to get on the scale. I don't feel that I'm down and I really hate to see the up!! LOL

Hello, was diagnosed a couple of years ago with type 2 diabtetes, but have not had great success with controlling it. Havent had a consistent doctor so my medicine keeps changing. Does anyone have any advice about doctors and the right ones for diabetes?

Hi ShopAnyWhere. Welcome to the Diabetes thread. Why not join in our discussions and tell us more about yourself?

My PCP handles my diabetes treatment, but if your insurance covers it, you might want to consult an Endocrinologist who specializes in Diabetes.

Hi ShopAnyWhere! My PCP also handles my diabetes, but some people see an Endocrinologist. (My mom has been trying to get me to go to hers, but I think I'm managing just fine on my with my current Dr.)

Trish - I don't eat when I'm not hungry either. I've always skipped breakfast, every since I was a kid, and usually didn't eat until after school. Some days I get 1200, some days, like today 1000 or less. If you factor in my walking fitbit calories, I usually net 800 or less a day. MFP likes to fuss about me eating too little, but I know sometimes I don't log the best in the world and I see no point in stuffing myself because of some arbitrary 1200 calorie number either.

CarolSue - my optometrist stressed I had to get checked every year for sure now, but I'm already blind as a bat so I have to go anyways to get contacts. That won't be a problem. Step on the scale! You might be surprised!!!

Fatmad - hope you are doing well. Grats for the NSV on Easter!

Going to the Dr. tomorrow to get a more in depth reading on my blood work. I'm pretty stoked. I'm hoping his scale matches my scale at home so he can see the true weight loss. Going to wear super light clothes! Ladies up here at work threw me a Taco Tuesday belated b-day party yesterday. Went over a smidge on calories (like 60 LOL) but walking and everything I was still in the green. Carbs didn't go over 30. So happy I'm getting back in the groove of things.

Again this morning I wrote a long message and poof it was gone. Just wasn't up to writing it again.

ShopAnyWhere Welcome!!! The only time I went to a nutritionist I never went back because she told me to eat 9 to 11 bread exchanges a day. I knew enough about what high carb would do to me so I never went back. The first doctor who diagnosed me with diabetes handed me the standard American Diabetic Associations diet and said "I am told to give you this, but you will find your own way to control this". He did tell me that at that time they had decided that we need to eat less fat. I asked him how low you could go and he didn't know because they didn't know yet. So I got busy eating as healthy as I knew how using lowfat and I exercised like crazy. Within a week, I had the blood sugar under control and off medicine. Later I switched to low carb. So when the dietician told me to eat all those starches, I knew enough by then that that would be a death sentence for me. I stayed on low carb lost about 75 lbs and I was healthy and diabetes gone.

Years later because I went back to old habits the diabetes returned. The doctor I have now just likes for me to be doing something to improve it. I went on Atkins back then and got myself totally healthy and FBS normal, but I did keep taking the Metformin. As soon as I reached my goal, I stupidly went back to my old habits and now I'm doing low carb again. The difference this time is that I know this is the way I have to eat the rest of my life.

Many of us have learned by reading some really good books by doctors as well as people have successfully got their diabetes under control. I hope you can find a good doctor or nutrition that can guide you to get yours under control. However, you can do like many of us have. You can google a lot of info and Carol Sue has found good books at her local library and at Goodwill.

Feel free to ask questions as everyone here is good at sharing what works for them too. The support here is great. We are learning to do this together.

Today was my 3 day OP. I've always heard the 3rd day is the hardest to get through, but I decided before I got out of bed that I didn't think that had to be true. I made up my mind it was going to be a really great OP day and it has been. I had my eggs, bacon, toast and coffee with 1/2 and 1/2 for breakfast. Lunch was pork tenderloin and salad. Dinner is when I just don't want to cook so I just made 2 eggs, Canadian bacon and 2% American cheese and I'm through for the day. I am absolutely thrilled with how good I feel except for my itchy eyes. A lot of pollen so I must be allergic to something in the air.
