Carol Sue I have the same problem with portions. I bookmarked the 2 links because I need to refresh my mind to help me stay OP. So if you need the reference I will probably have it. I know that if I will stay OP long enough that the sweet cravings will go away and hopefully the desire for the salty foods will go too. I actually threw out 3/4 bag of pretzels last night. I'm working on DH changing to this way of eating because he is hungry all the time. I like the fact that the Edify link has the DH story on there as well as hers. I hope I can get him to read what a man has to say about this way of eating.
I am so convinced by this that I am back OP today. Not counting carbs, but I don't think I will have to. The problem I always had with Atkins or most low carb plans was all the meat. I like the fact that the RN said that while we do have to have enough protein, it is the fat that we need to increase. I can do that. For me it means getting rid of the starchy carbs and replace them with butter, EVOO, and CO etc. Will search out more LCHF recipes. I also liked the fact that I read somewhere, not sure if it was her site or the other one that you can have milk, but it needs to be regular milk. That makes since to me. I think that is why as a kid when I drank a little carton of regular milk that I stayed satisfied until dinner. One thing that got me looking at this info is that my DS girlfriend text me yesterday saying that she had tried to do this on her own and she isn't getting anywhere so she needed my expertise. LOL!!! I told her I wasn't an expert, etc and then I shared the link of the RN and last night I sent her the new link as well. I feel I have to be a success for those around me who are battling this. DH feels thinks the Invokana works better for him and I am not really thrilled with the possibility of an inflammed/damaged pancreas or pancreatis etc. So I plan to get the bs under control and since we are paying over $200 for the 2 of us to have the Januvia, we decided that we could pay the $200 for the Invokana. Will have to talk to the doctor about it when we see him again. Talked to his DD last night. We had a really good phone visit with her. His DGD had called to talk to DH for him to help her with a science project she is doing on the lungs. He was a Respiratory Therapist in Neo-natal for about 20 yrs. Opened the door for us to talk to his DD and many things came out and I feel that much healing of our relationship was accomplished. Actually made me feel like she really needs us for moral/emotional support. I am so glad she felt free to finally share some things with us. Sometimes they just know that their parents are there for them emotionally. I feel so much better about things. Also her nursing job is with a clinic where she is like a Nurse Practitioner. She told DH that the more carbs you eat the higher your bs will go. Of course she lives in So. FL where low carb is popular not only to dieters but also to a lot of the doctors. In fact, she put her DH on a LC plan and he is looking pretty good. Sorry this is so long. Just sharing again. Weight is back up to 220.4 this morning and fbs is 155. So this is Day 1 of LCHF for me. Have a good day. |

Trish, I am going to try to cut back on meat. I love meat, but feel that my portions are bigger than I need. When I was trying to do 5:2 I was eating mostly just vegetables on the 500 calorie days and that really dropped my blood sugar down to normal. I don't remember why I couldn't stick with that plan.
Today we went out to eat and I just ordered a cup of chili. The restaurant we went to is going to be removing chili from their menu for the summer and I wanted to get it one more time. DH got a burger and fries and I ate 1/4 of his burger. He never eats everything on his plate. I resisted the french fries because they are not on my list of favorites. I know that I don't really need a whole meal at supper. Something small is all I really need. If I order a meal, I will eat it all. I think the meal plan we ate when we were young were good then, but now with diabetes they don't always work for us, factoring post menopause in with it. |
Carol Sue One of the things I like about this new site I read was that you don't have to eat a lot of meat. I think that is a real problem I have had in the past was eating too much and then I just got sick of eating it. Also because I thought you were supposed to eat high protein, I didn't eat enough veggies. I've even read of people who eat nothing but the protein. I don't think I could do that as it would make me sick. I remember telling my doc one time that I just couldn't do low carb any more because I just couldn't eat another bite of fish or chicken. My other problem is that I have not been eating enough fat so I'm working on that one. I got in a habit of not adding butter etc to veggies when eating lowfat diets and just don't always remember to do it.
I also believe the foods we ate when we were kids was real food not genetically modified or raised with so many additives and chemicals. Most of the foods that we eat now have chemicals that we can't even begin to pronounce or recognize the names of. I said that I am on a LCHF way of eating, but I don't think I would call it that even though I know the sites I read call it that. I drink milk and until I can learn how to use some of the sub flours, DH likes some of his meats cooked in or with sauces or gravies. I personally don't like soy flour. I've read that some low carbers use almond and coconut flours to sub for regular flour. I haven't been able to find any online recipes that use it yet, but I am looking. I may have to purchase a low carb cookbook. Shannon If you are reading, do you happen to have a recipe for anything like that in your low carb cookbooks? |
Could one of you please hit me with a good dose of reality?!:dizzy:
Why can I tell everyone else that there is no one size fits all solution, but not heed that advice myself? I know nothing is quick, but if I don't see results in a matter of days, I call whatever new fad I'm trying a total fail. I spend so much time trying to name/label the OP way of the day, I forget that the actual name is irrelevant. IE makes a lot of sense to me, but darn it if I don't want to pick that apart as well. It's one of those days, girls.:( |
Momwithdogs I can't tell you how many times I've done that even with IE. For one thing I was always looking for something to make me lose weight faster. Years ago WW taught us that we had to be on a diet for at least 2 weeks before we see any results. But I still have a tendency to want to find a quicker way. I just hope that I can stay on the plan I'm on now with out getting side tracked. I hope you can get OP easier than I have. Taking the time to come here for encouragement is a big step in the right direction.
You can do this. |
Momwithdogs, Trish and I have been doing something lately...taking the parts of the plan that work for us and calling it "Trish's Plan" or "Carol's Plan." I know very few people who follow a plan to the letter without any tweaks at all. You really do have to believe in the plan you finally choose and give it time to work. Like Trish once said, her doctor told her than any plan will work, as long as you follow it. And that's right. To me, the best plan is the one you can stick with for the rest of your life. You will not stick to a plan if you don't like the foods you are eating. There's always sacrifices to be made, such as diabetics limiting the carbs, or just limiting your portions, but as long as there's plenty of foods that satisfy, you will succeed.
There's nothing wrong with trying a plan that is working for someone else, as long as you understand that it might not be the best plan for YOU. Trish, there is a woman on another forum who has been on Atkins Induction for the past 2 months. She has followed it faithfully with no cheats and lost 30 lbs. I give her credit, and I would love to be able to lose that much, but you have to really love meat to be able to do that. She eats 10 slices of bacon per day and 14oz hamburger patties. I can't see me going that long without my veggies. I think you can lose just as well by eating mostly veggies and a small portion of protein with each meal. You do need protein, but it's the carbs that cause the problem. There's no getting around it. Momwithdogs, I know you said that you got low blood sugar when doing low carb, so I can understand how it doesn't work for you. But you could add enough non-starchy carbs to your meals to keep that from happening. Each plan has to be tweaked to work for the individual. For me, I seem to get in trouble with the least little bit of carbs. I can try to do it as others do, but my body just gets too big of a carb response. |
Thank you both for the advice!
I cannot make heads or tails of this mess, as none of it really makes sense. Here is yesterday's IE kinda plan: FBS:93 (doc wants 85, but have a very hard time getting there- seems too low) Breakfast: 2 scrambled eggs, salsa, crumpet w/butter (BS 113) Snack: cheese and crackers Lunch: brown rice and mushroom risotto, green salad (BS 110) Snack: popcorn Dinner: orange chicken and lo mein (BS 114) I take my readings one hour after eating. According to my diet, BS should be through the roof. For breakfast this morning, I ate a very small bowl of shredded wheat and 2 eggs...BS 173. Would love to say it's a side effect of yesterday, but my FBS this morning was 103. Not great, but I'll take it. The only pattern I can see, is carbs are ok for me, as long as they are in combo with HF/HP foods. I'm fine with that, in theory. :dizzy: Trish- I am not sure how many carbs you allow yourself, but my grandfater-in-law has Celiac's, so is on a gluten free diet. He thickens everything with a combo of butter and cornstarch. It does taste fine to me and his insulin-dependent wife seems to tolerate it quite well. |
Momwithdogs
To get a very clear picture, take a reading just before you eat, then every half hour afterwards for 2-3 hours. That will give you a better idea as to when you are reaching your peak reading. It can peak at very different times after eating for everyone and your 1 hour readings may be too soon for you! I know that seems like a lot of checking, but it is just for a Couple days to get a very detailed picture using a NORMAL day with normal foods. You may be a bit surprised to find that those carbs are affecting you more than you realize... OR you may confirm they are not spiking you. My nutritionist toldme you don't want to see your bs go up more than 40 pts at the peak after your meal. As for "acceptable" highs, the ADA says it should be no higher than 180 at peak after eating. Many diabetes experts say no more than 140. |
Momwithdogs I'm not counting carbs. I eat protein and fat for breakfast... eggs, bacon and sometimes cheese and or greens. For lunch I eat protein, salad, non-starchy veggies, dairy and fruit and I added more fat to my meals. I didn't use much oil before. Dinner is some kind of protein, usually fish and I make it with frozen stir-fry veggies and add fat to that meal. I am not worrying about carrot that are in my stir-fry because I'm not eating that much any way. I'm finding that the fat is starting to cause me to be satisfied. I've designed my Trish's Plan using some of the guidelines that I learned on the new links we recently shared with each other here.
Laurie Thanks for sharing the info on the insulin peaks. I never understood all of that too much although I do check it. I have learned that if I go 5 hrs between meals that my bs is usually down below 120. I did read somewhere that if you can keep your fbs below 120 that you are not damaging organs. Well, I dodged the bullet today. When we left for DH to have his endoscopy, he thought he would want to go out to eat. I didn't think he would, however, he did get out at the store with me. Not sure I was ready to face a restaurant especially fast food place. Interesting thing about DH FBS this morning. He didn't eat anything last night because of the endoscopy and he couldn't take his meds last night including the Januvia. His fbs was 95 this morning. Really strange. He is starting back on the Invokana tonight. We will find a way to get it since it works for him and the Januvia does not. Carol Sue I guess that woman you mentioned may be who I read about although I don't remember if I read how much weight she had lost. I would love to be able to do what she did, but I don't think I could be 100% on AI. It only took me about 6 months on AI to get my A1c and all my numbers of cholesterol and triglycerides normal. I didn't lose loads of weight, but that may be due to the fact that I didn't eat enough fat. As I said above, I have tweaked my plan some more with some of the things I read on the recent links. The added fat, the one fruit a day and the dairy seems to be working as far as the hunger. I am eating only 3 meals a day. I did have an incident where I started eating some dark chocolate and mixed nuts today at the end of lunch. Got carried away with the nuts and suddenly realized that I didn't want to get started with the chocolate again so I put it down the garbage disposal. The nuts are OP, but if I have another incident with them like I did today they will be disposed of as well. However I can prevent that by measuring out the serving. It comes back to learning portion control. I still count today as a good day because I handled the slip and I actually learned something which makes the day successful. I was right back OP with dinner. So I am pleased. |
HI all: end of April, I am true to ticker but no downward change. That must change. I have a stressful weekend teaching a course, and I am vowing to change my evil ways after this is done.
I also hope to visit here more. Sorry to be MIA so much. Getting ready for this is stressing me out. Its been hard to stick to WOE plan, but I mostly have been successful. Unfortunately, its not leading to weight loss, at least not quickly or easily. Lets see what the good weather brings us. Hope to see you all in MAY |
Trish, I couldn't do AI continuously either. I just try to keep my carbs to a minimum. I just have to remember to keep an eye on my overall calories. I also haven't been drinking enough water in the past few weeks. It seems that every time our temperatures go down I get out of the habit of drinking water. When it's cold, I prefer a hot drink.
I eat some dark chocolate occasionally and also some nuts. Sometimes I have walnuts and sometimes almonds, which are both healthy nuts. I am able to just eat a 2or 3 and be satisfied. Well, this is the last day of April. I started the thread for May, so I will close this thread now. See you all in the May thread! http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/diab...ml#post5159569 |
