  • The possible dawn phenomena is why I have been eating a hard boiled egg in the morning. I figure with the protein and fat it should keep me on an even keel until I "break the fast" at 11 am.

The best tip for me is fat and protein every time I eat (including 2 tbls CO and probably 3 TBL olive oil in evening salad) and 15 minute cardio in the morning and the evening. Keeps me much more even. And I am losing more weight! We'll see how that works this week.

I made an herb garden in my kitchen last month. I love snipping different kinds of basil, oregano, thyme and rosemary, especially for my salad. The smells are scrumptious!
  • I've had two very off plan evenings last night and tonight.....I feel gross! LOL! It has been a crazy weekend. My husband traded in two of our three cars for a new truck this weekend. It is huge, like a boat. A really large boat. My daughter has been very sad. She LOVED Daddy's Jeep, Mr. Jeepers and we always told her it would be hers one day but we decided to go down to two vehicles and we got a really nice trade in value for him. She likes the truck but is still not over losing Mr. Jeepers. Hopefully time will heal her little broken heart.
  • Where is everyone? Lol! I'm usually last to post in the morning.

My off plan weekend eating is making my Monday weigh ins not as nice....but that is why I picked Monday (so that my sneak peeks during the week would encourage me by being less) so I guess I shouldn't complain. Lost one pound this week based on weekly weigh in but during the week I had a low that showed almost a two pound loss. Oh well, it's a marathon not a sprint right?

    FBS was 105 today.
  • Shannon, I woke up early this morning, but then fell back to sleep and just got up at 9:30. That's really late for me, but I think my body needed the extra sleep.

I don't think Monday is a good day for weigh-in, LOL, unless you have yourself braced for the worst. I don't have an official weigh-in day, but if I did, I would like Friday...before the weekend! I make sure I get on the scale at least once a week, but I am reluctant to do it when I think I have gained. I have to force myself to face facts.

DH wanted to trade in 2 cars once, but I love our Monte Carlo so much and want to keep it a while longer. It has 100,000 miles on it, but he takes very good care of it. I don't drive a lot, but when I drive it, it feels like it was made for me. So we just found a buyer for the other car and now we have the Monte, and his hot rod Camaro, which he only drives to car cruises. 71 years old and he's hot rodding around like a teenager!

We went to the casino yesterday, and even though I did not eat any carbs, I ate a LOT. Lots of veggie and meat...chicken, steak and grilled sausage. It was buffet so these were smaller pieces of meat, but still I filled my plate twice and ate beyond the point of satiety. We ate around 5 and got home around 11. My blood sugar was 124, but when I got up this morning it was 116. It is rarely lower in the morning. I feel that I have my eating under control as far as carbs are concerned...most times I pass on them...so now I need to work on my portions and IE. I think that as long as I am not eating carbs I can overeat, and that's why my weight is stalled. I am not actually hungry for breakfast this morning, so I will probably be eating more of a brunch today and I'm cooking a turkey breast for dinner.

I would be very happy with a 1 lb a week loss. I lose a couple, gain a few, lose a few, gain a couple.

Kris, tell me more about how you did your herb garden. I would like to do that.
  • Just coming back to report on the Bulletproof Coffee. I tried it today since I was able to get some grass fed butter over the weekend. So, I made my coffee and added 1 tsp of the butter and 1 tsp of coconut oil. The key is blending it really well to thoroughly mix the oils in (in a blender or with an immersion blender, don't think you'll get same results with spoon). I then added my sugar sub as usual. I did not add my usual half and half. The coffee turned a light brown shade and was very frothy from the blender. My first sip was a little oily feeling but after that I didn't really notice other than that my lips stayed nicely moisturized. The flavor was surprisingly rich. It was a very different taste from my usual coffee but not in a bad way, just different. I really can't imagine advancing to a tbsp of both oils but could drink it again at this amount. The coconut flavor, to me, is strong in this, which I don't love but it's not bad, just strong. I do feel like I will need to go potty but my regular coffee does that too.

Editing to add after talking with folks online, they say "refined" coconut oil tastes less coconutty and they recommend adding a little heavy whipping cream.
  • love bulletproof coffee! I had mine after noon today and it was soooo good! I'm going to have a fat stripping frappe this afternoon. Low cal and tastes like a Wendy's frosty.

    1/2 cup water
    1/2 cup almond milk
1/2 cup 1% or non fat cottage cheese (blend it all together and while the blender is going)

add 1/2 tsp of gluccoman or xanthum gum
    2 TBS of cocoa
sweetener of choice (Truvia for me)
    20 ice cubes
blend until the consistancy of a milkshake. (I sometimes add a piece of my skinny chocolate to get little choco bits in my frappe)

the original recipe includes a scoop of protein powder, but I sub in the cottage cheese)
  • Nothing much to report. I over slept this morning had to drive two of the kids to school. Came back still tired, laid down for a 3 hour nap. Weight good, fbs 121 today.

I will try that! I have protein powder that I never know what to do with.
  • I have a ? I went to the dr yesterday and my glucose was 123. I was on a fast. She said that is prediabetic. I went and ate then checked my glucose 2 hrs later and it was 104. My A1c is. 5.9.
I eat dinner before 6 always and never eat a bite of anything till about 7 am. Could I be going to long between eating? I know my hubby goes thru spells of needing a healthy snack before bed.
  • dgramie, Hi, and welcome to our Diabetes Chat! If I had an A1c of 5.9 and a two hour postprandial of 104 I would be jumping for joy! I don't know what to tell you about the fasting of 123. It does signify prediabetes. Could it have been a fluke? How often do you test your fasting glucose? Do you regularly get readings in the 120s? I would start testing FBG regularly and keeping a record. If it remains on the high side, you could try eating an evening snack for a week or so and see if that makes a difference. But I think that not eating after dinner is a good thing, and if you get into the habit of having an evening snack it could be a hard habit to break somewhere down the line. For me, no snacking after dinner is best. Anytime I eat in the evening, I can count on my FBG being higher than when I went to bed. Everyone is different, so you will need to know what works for you. Depending on what your diet is normally, I would cut back on starchy carbs like sweets, bread, rice, pasta, and get some exercise every day. This should help lower your FBG. Losing some weight would help too, but if that was easy, I'd be doing it! LOL

If you are prediabetic, you are in the early stages and you should be able to nip it in the bud, but it will probably be something to be concerned about the rest of your life.

Please come back and let us know how things are going. The more people we add to our little group, the more information we can learn from each other.
  • My turkey breast turned out delicious yesterday. It wasn't warm enough to have the air condition running but I didn't want to heat up the house using the oven for a long time so I cooked it on the gas grill. I heated the right side to medium and put the turkey breast on the left side with the lid closed. All I did was butter the skin a bit for browning. It took about 3 hours, a little longer than it would take in the oven, but I heard that low and slow is good for turkey. I usually don't like white meat because it's dry, but this was very moist and tender. This is my new way to cook turkey breast. I also put a couple potatoes in with it. I rarely make baked potatoes because they take so long to cook, but since the grill was on anyway...... They were on the small side and turned out great, with a nice crispy skin. Yum. I ate mine, and my blood sugar went up a bit, but not a major spike like I get with bread. It was tasty, but I know not to make a habit of it.

I just finished reading a book called "The Big Fat Surprise." It was about low fat vs low carb/high fat. It quoted studies showing that sat fat is NOT the problem with heart disease but rather high carb is. It was not in reference to weight loss but heart disease instead. After years of being told to eat low fat it's very hard to change my thinking. But they make sense when they say that although many people have turned to low fat, the cases of heart disease have increased. I keep thinking of that woman I know who follows the Dean Ornish low fat diet but has had 5 heart attacks. Apparently low fat isn't working for her.

Now I am reading Don't Go Hungry for Life. I just started it so I can't really say where it's going. It seems to be related to the Set Point Diet and also Intuitive Eating. I'll let you know if I learn anything from it.

Both of these books were recommended somewhere on 3FC. I will have to try to find the threads again to give my input.
  • Lotsakids, when you say you are subbing the cottage cheese for the protein powder do you mean if I use protein powder I don't need the cottage cheese?

And what does the gluccoman or xanthum gum do? I don't usually buy those things. Do you make this in a blender? Otherwise, where would 20 ice cubes fit? Does this make 1 serving?
  • Thanks carol sue!! I have been a daily poster in the 300lb thread for many yrs. my hubby is diabetic and we watch carbs. My highest weight was 308. I last 90 lbs and gained 60 back over the course of 6 yrs. I have 18 back off and walking or gardening daily.
My fbs was 133 this morning. My dinner was at 6 and I ate 20 grams of carbs total. I will continue working on it this wk and test it a few times a day. If it stays up I will try a light snack.
I found out my potassium is low and I start a pill today for that.

Not directed at me but I can answer. Yes, if you use the powder you do not need the cottage cheese. The xanthum gum is a thickening agent and can be found in a tiny pkg at Walmart for around 50 cent. This is made in the blender. I have made something fairly identical to this (I remembered later), here is the recipe I followed. It did not taste quite like a frosty to me but it was not bad either.

  • Thanks Shannon. The 210 calories doesn't make me happy, though. I can't think of anything I would get rid of to fit this in.

dgrmie, the fasting glucose has me stumped, especially with the A1c. My fasting used to run in the 120s all the time but my doctor wasn't concerned because my A1c was in the 6's. We totally missed my pre-diabetic period and I was diagnosed Type 2 while in the hospital recouperating from cardiac bypass surgery.

When do you do your exercise? Sometimes a 15 min walk in the evening after dinner will help with fasting glucose.
