Hi everyone! :) I am new here and was just diagnosed with diabetes less than a month ago. I'm still getting used to following the exchange meal plan that my doctor put me on although I guess it's working because my blood sugar is usually around 90-120 when I test it now and I've lost 16 lbs.

How often do you usually test your blood sugar? I've gotten into the habit of doing it several times each day. I have a doctor's appt coming up next weekend so I will follow up with him on what he thinks I should do, but I'm just wondering what's normal for everyone else. :D

akrosey49 05-14-2009 10:46 PM

Hi Mapleleaf :wel3fc: im rosey and live in alaska,im a type 2 and have been for ions..i test only in the am as over the yrs my sl stay about the same,if im feeling off then i test to see where i am..follow what your dr tells you as although we are all diabetic we are all diff and what works for me might not for you and congrats on the wt loss it all helps..hope you come back and get to know us all here..we are fun and helpful bunch..ttfn rosey

Ruthxxx 05-15-2009 07:06 AM

Great HA1C, Rosetta. Rosey, I know how scary attacks can be - used to have asthma. Peony, the rain WILL stop - eventually! Jeanne, I didn't know it ever turned dry and brown on the Wet Coast nut now I see you are in East WA.

Maple Leaf, :welcome: and great work on the weightloss. I test just first thing in the a.m. and seldom test any other time except if I have a very low FBGL and want to see if it's gone back up after breakfast.

Today is a Baking Marathon Day as we have a sale at my Church tomorrow morning. I WILL BE STRONG and not have even a single chocolate chip as I know a little taste can head me toward Sugar Binge Town! A big glass of water while I bake is most helpful.

Have a healthy Friday.

akrosey49 05-15-2009 02:34 PM

Morning everyone..its raining this am,but we need it to make the flowers bloom..my sl was 169 this am :( the prednisone they have me on for the asthma said that could happen..i have to take it 4 more days..ruth a bake sale :D my favorite with a pot of coffee ..hope u all have agreat weekend and meowee we miss you hope u are getting better  rosey

Renacer 05-15-2009 02:51 PM

Nice day here at least. My FBGL was 75 today, I'm amaze. My baby has been sick and he has been home with me for the last three days...I think I just focus on him and if there's some room on myself, at least I've been behaving.;)

Ruth, enjoy your bake sale.

Have a great weekend everyone.:)

meowee 05-15-2009 04:21 PM

Basically, I'm still MIA . . .

The two weeks in Ontario where extremely hectic and stressful. I probably should not have gone -- but, we don't always get to make the 'best for us' choices when family matters intervene.

The trip certainly did nothing to ease my ongoing medical situation which was finally diagnosed as Pneumonia. Since returning, I've had two rounds of two different antibiotics and still no relief in sight. I'm getting weaker and more pain ridden as each day goes by. Afraid I don't spend much time sitting upright let alone on the computer.

Back to the doctor on Tuesday, the 19th and will see what he thinks he'll try next. Personally, I think this must be a viral rather than a bacterial pneumonia so there may not be much to do for it except wait it out and keep the :crossed:

Amazingly enough, the BGL has been doing fairly well, all things considered.

Hope to check in again soon. :grouphug:

Renacer 05-15-2009 05:01 PM

Hope you feel better.

Ruthxxx 05-16-2009 05:47 AM

Quick post before I pack up my car with the bake sale stuff. I managed to bake all day and did not taste even one little bit! My BGL is great this a.m. and I even dropped another pound. The further I get from that darned 200 wall, the better I feel.

Now to survive the sale. Luckily I will be selling the plants and that is far from the bake table. My own stuff won't tempt me but i must stay far away from Kay Dean's famous butter tarts! Pray for me!

Happy Saturday.

akrosey49 05-16-2009 04:35 PM

Just Diagnosed With Type II

Hello,
I have been just diagnosed with Type II diabetes and just started with Metformin twice daily,my FBS is 143.

I have 60lbs to loose and am wondering if anyone is on Weight Watchers and how are you doing with the diabetes and loosing weight? I joined Weight Watchers last Tuesday.

I go to my diabetes class on June 9th, which is the first date they had open. Overall I feel good, but have had terrible sleeping problems and night sweats, probably because I am 56 years young. The doctor thinks my diabetes is a combination of age onset and being overweight. Who knows? All I know is I want to be very diligent to work with this the best way I can. It has been a great shock and I have had no symptoms at all. I also have not gotton my glucose monitor yet as my doctor said to wait until I take the class to get all the info and insurance requirements too.

Please advise with any help for a real newbie at this.

Thanks,
Melanie in Colorado:)

Renacer 05-17-2009 09:27 PM

Hi Melsie and welcome! As you I'm a type II and I'm doing WW. Although their program is not specifically for diabetics for me the portion control and discipline has worked just fine. I now have an idea on how to play with the carbohydrates and keep those numbers low (unless I cheat :o). Also including exercise in my lifestyle has helped me get even better numbers, I've been able to loose 10 pounds. I think the only difference is that I'm not taking any medication so I'm not sure if that would affect your weight loss, but don't worry you have come to the right place...The ladies in here are really knowledgeable and kind, I'm sure they would help you.

Chat with you later!:)

TappingPeony 05-17-2009 10:40 PM

Welcome Melanie! :welcome3:We are quite a diverse bunch, that is true, everyone has something that works for them eventually, and we are all always learning. I think that it is a great place to share, so I really like to hear what the new ones find out in class.

Ahhhhh, all is quiet now. No more drama and chaos, the Dance Recital weekend is over. It was wonderful. The 3 and 4 y/o groups are always the hit, but the big girls are always amazing to watch. They keep hinting that they want our tap class to do something at the next recital, but I don't think it will be me up there any time soon. Next will be piano recital sometime in August.

It actually didn't rain today:carrot:

I can't believe my daughter has only 7 school days left, only because we had 2 snow days. Where did the year go?

Well, I'd best get to the things I have neglected all weekend before I go to bed. Everyone have a great Monday. Check up on you later!
Kathy:df:

Ruthxxx 05-18-2009 10:11 AM

Melanie, I removed your duplicate posts. Metformin is one of the few drugs for diabetes that does not cause weight gain - it's actually supposed to help with loss but so far not for me! :( Like you, I had no symptoms so getting the diagnosis was a great shock. I am keeping my levels well now by watching my diet and focusing on better foods. Your class will tell you more but please stick around here to ask questions.

I know stress can put up FBGL but wonder if bad dreams so the same. I had a doozy between 3 and 5 and woke to a 7.5/135 FBGL reading which is high for me. I had a nearly no carb breakfast. Sometime this is a real roller coaster ride and I must stop trying to figure out the reasons.

Hope we all tap through Monday with good feelings.

Melsie52 05-18-2009 05:31 PM

Thanks for the Welcome

I just started Weight Watchers and hoping this is going to be good for me. I don't eat any refined sugars and am trying just with the knowledge that I have picking low glycemic veges and fruit. I picked bulgar and a very low fat bread today for a little higher carb choice. I also exercised for about a 1/2 hour today as a beginner on the treadmil. I actually used 130 calories.

Time will tell me how to do all this with counting points and then carbs. Lots for overwhelming.

Thank you all,
Melanie in Colorado :carrot:

I've been suffering from nightmares since I was a child, when I was pregnant those nightmares were more intense and when I was diagnosed with "gestetional" diabetes and started monitoring my levels exactly the same happened to me: high levels after a nightmare. I asked my doctor and diabetes educator but their answer was no, but honestly I still have the same question. I'll make some research about it, if I find something on that I'll let you know. I hope your nightmares stay away.

Poeny, one of the things that I learned at the nutrition classes was to limit the carbs intake between 55-60 grams per meal and 15-30 grams per snacks. I found that really interesting, when I was diagnosed everyone told me "cut all the sugar" "no sugar" and I did exactly that but high levels would stay around. I've been following what I learned in the nutrition class and it is working perfectly, I'm even enjoying fruits again and sugar in my oatmeal! The educator said that 60 grams of carbs per meal is a good number to start knowing what your body can handle since everyone is different.

Melsie, you have a great attitude and that helps a lot! Wish you the best.:)

TappingPeony 05-20-2009 12:02 AM

Funny, I had nightmares when I was pregnant with my 2nd, but had gestational diabetes with my 1st. I was really terrified about the nightmares because I have had dreams and nightmares periodically through my life that are premonitions. Needless to say, I slept little. Fortunately, the only one that came true was that the 2nd baby was also a boy. I can still predict some things, but fortunately it has been awhile since I've had a nightmare. I must say though, with the stress hormones that are released in a nightmare, it can't be any different than the stress related to illness or surgery, and both of those make blood sugars go up, sometimes dramatically. That is a normal physiological response we can do little about except accept and move on.

Glad the classes are helping you, and thanks for the info, Renacer. It is hard for me to keep at the 45 carbs for meals the dietician put me on sometimes, like pizza night! I'm glad there has been no drastic change. I was shocked as to what had changed in the years since I was a gestational diabetic. There is a lot of diabetes in my grandfather's family, but I still wasn't prepared, or even really cared about it.

It was a gorgeous day here, and again no rain. Hope it stays this way for the next 2 days' school events that are outside. Get to play school nurse once again for the field day, which is always fun--especially giving out hugs to cure the little ones. Hoping to be without any broken bones again this year--the 2 years before that we had several.

Have a great Wednesday all. Kathy:df:

Ruthxxx 05-20-2009 06:07 AM

Kathy, I took the liberty of changing your text colour to blue as I just could not read the lime - old eyeballs, I guess.

Renacer, it makes sense that stress from a dream could put up the BGL. I seldom have really bad dreams but this one was a doozy - I lost a friend's child! I hope it wasn't a premonition.

Melanie, when chosing carbs, make them count by selecting whole grain. I love ww bulgar, especially in tabbouleh!

Today is not going to be fun as I am doing the yicky prep for a colonoscopy tomorrow - nothing is wrong, just routine because of my family history. Right now I am enjoying a coffee with sf Irish Cream syrup in it. The rest of the day is clear liquids, Jello and broth. I am allowed beaten egg white and am wondering if I can do something with egg whites and Jello - maybe a mousse? Anyhow I will be monitoring the BGL during the day to be sure it doesn't drop too low because I am allowed hard candies! Woo-hoo!

I'll stop whining now. Have a great Hump Day!

sapphire9 05-20-2009 03:17 PM

Hi, all. It's sunny here, but not too hot, thank goodness. My bgl was 193 yesterday. Probably because I forgot to take my glucophage at lunch and also have been on an ice cream binge. It's almost gone now, thank goodness. A little bummed out about Gilles not winning DWTS last night. We'll probably see more of him though. Ooh la la!
Also, fell at work on Monday and banged up my knee and twisted my back. Hopefully, no permanent damage has been done. I think I should have crawled into a cave and stayed there, the way this year is going.
Ruth - That doesn't sound too appetizing - egg white and jello. The worst thing about a colonoscopy is the prep. I hope it goes okay.
A shoutout to all the newbies.
Rosey, jeanne, where are you, chickies? And what is going on with Meowee? I hope she's okay.

Melsie52 05-22-2009 08:27 AM

FBS 123 Down from 143
Good morning all, I am elated that my FBS is finally going down. I am the one who found out from last week I had type II diabetes. Things are going well. I decided not to do Weight Watchers, but to start Nutrisystem D for diabetics. My shipment is on its way. This took a lot of researching, reading everything I could. My sister was on it an has maintained for over a year. She is not diabetic, but has had some health issues and is doing great now.
I go to my diabetic class on the June 9th. I talked to my cousin who is a nutritionist and is excited about what I am doing. I have to get this weight off. I have already lost 4lbs, by just watching my carbs and doing some exercising. I will let you know how I progress.

Thanks for listening,
Melanie in Colorado

Renacer 05-22-2009 09:32 AM

^^^YEY Melsie!!! Congratulations, you'll see how with balancing your alimentation and exercise and weight loss those numbers are going to get even better.:)

Ruthxxx 05-25-2009 07:26 AM

Sure is quiet in here! I guess the long weekend in the USA is keeping folks busy with family and friends.

I have been remiss in popping in here - the colonoscopy plus a busy weekend sort of screwed me up. The colonoscopy results were great so I can stop worrying about that! The Colyte for the prep worked really well but I gained rather than lost! I couldn't believe it until I read the very high salt content on the stuff. Anyhow the water weight dropped off overnight - where did it go? I know I didn't get up for potty.

I've been doing lots of gardening, both in the village planters and the Fair Grounds and my knees have been behaving pretty well. Yesterday I was up and down the deck stairs too many times as I worked on the patio so they are a bit wonky this morning. That'll go away as I get moving around.

So how are we all surviving the weekend? Saturday was bad for me foodwise but the BGL has been in range so I must be doing something right.

meowee 05-25-2009 09:50 AM

Just a quick little  to let you know I'm still with you in Spirit, gang . . . :grouphug:

sapphire9 05-26-2009 02:47 PM

Hi, all. BGL a little high this a.m. Probably because I took the wrong pill last night and didn't take the glucohage/glucotrol. I have them all counted out and separated into little boxes, but i opened the wrong box last night. Senility visits. lol. I've been bad food wise. My weight is creeping up. Must get myself together.
Meowee - It's good to hear from you. We miss you.
Rosey - It's nice and springy here too, but a little on the cool side. I hope you get good lab results.

TappingPeony 05-27-2009 12:12 AM

Evening all!
Emily and I were pretty lazy over the holiday-DH was on call all w/e and the holiday, and it was rainy on and off. Beautiful rainbow on Monday evening during a sun shower.
Tomorrow is the last day of school for Emily. Mixed feelings on that one every year. Thursday she is going spelunking with the Girl Scouts, so her summer break starts off with some fun. The boys will be home at the same time for break at the end of June, just when Emily gets back from Camp! Can you spell CHAOS? Good kind of chaos-the boys haven't seen eachother since Christmas.
We are waiting to hear from the bank so we can close on this little temporary house. We can then move, get the repairs done on the big house and get it on the market. I hope we can get it sold without taking a big loss, and get started on the new house. Ooooohh, maybe I can put the boys to work while they are home! Sounds reasonable. We'll see what happens.
Have a great evening and Wednesday. Kathy

Renacer 05-28-2009 09:54 AM

Hi Meowee!!!

Not much to report, still keeping my food/GL journal and still behaving.

I think I should see a family doctor so I can get a prescription for my supplies, I've been paying for everything and is really expensive.

MapleLeaf 05-30-2009 09:19 PM

Hi Everyone!! :D I hope your weekend is going well.

I am getting very frustrated with my fasting blood sugar levels. Last night I went to bed and my BS was a pretty normal 110 but I woke up and it was 125. Why!?! I have heard of the "dawn effect" but I am not sure what to do about it. :?: All of this monitoring does my head in sometimes. I am doing my best, losing weight, exercising, following my meal plan... but high BS readings still make me feel like I got a bad report card or something!

I was diagnosed about 6 weeks ago and I just got my A1C back and it is 8.6. :( The past few weeks, my BS has been mostly 100-130, with occasional times where it will go up to 150-160. So, the A1C has got to come down eventually, right?

Luckily, they found that my cholesterol levels are (surprisingly!) good. My cholesterol was at 147 and my triglycerides were at 127, which my doctor said was good. So, I guess at least there's that.

akrosey49 05-31-2009 02:00 PM

Hi everyone..it sure is quiet in here..its raining here today..i have been hobbling around,i pulled my thigh muscle and really is sore..hard to get around with my walker..thank goodness my dh is so helpful..diets going better as i cant get to the kitchen as often:dizzy: see i knew i could find something good in this..hope your day is good (((((hugs)))) rosey

meowee 06-01-2009 10:22 AM

Yep . . . I am still alive, but definitely not kicking very hard . . . my doctor is still dithering between Asthma and Pneumonia, or some combination thereof, as being the basis of my problems.

At least he has finally decided to refer me to a Respiratory Disease Specialist and I go to see this new guy on Thursday. I also have an appointment next Monday for a CAT scan. Obviously my constant 'at home cat-scanning ' doesn't do the job.

In the meantime, he, the GP took me off Prednisone, an oral steroid, because it's one of the worst things you can give a diabetic (doubled my BGL levels) and it has so many other side effects as well (however, it was working wonders for the wheezing and coughing after only four or five doses) and put me on Symbicort which is an inhaled steroid, combined with Salbutamol, an inhaled bronchodilator. I do get a tiny bit of wheezing relief from the Salbutamol, but nothing but high blood sugar levels from the Symbicort. Obviously I hope the specialist will find a way to temper the Prednisone so I can keep using it.

Other than that . . . nothing going on in my world. I am thinking of you gang.

sapphire9 06-01-2009 02:44 PM

Hi, all. usual summer weather here - overcast and cold. BGL was 106 this a.m. Lowest it's been in awhile. I didn't do anything different. Still eating bad. Weight up. Sigh.
Meowee - You're sure having a difficult time. I hope the docs come to a concensus on cause and treatment and you get better soon without raising your bgl.
Rosey - I hope your leg gets better soon.

Ruthxxx 06-01-2009 03:14 PM

Nice to see Meowee and Purrrecious the cat back for a bit.

Well, May was a good month as I actually lost five pounds! BGL was a tad high this morning but that was explained when I spotted my evening glyberide on the dresser. Duh! June should be a good month with local strawberries coming in and lots of asparagus and rhubarb still available. My garden is still not tilled and planted - too wet - but I am hoping for a good veggie crop later this summer.

I've been a bit more active with outside work and hope to get back into walking this month too. Yes, my knee hurts a lot but it hurts whether I use it or not so.... besides the dogs need exercise aside from chasing each other around the yard.

akrosey49 06-01-2009 03:39 PM

Hi everyone..another cloudy day here..am feeling a little better..been babysitting my grdd, she sure can keep me busy :dizzy:..meowee am so happy u are back, hope your docs can solve your troubles..i take prednisone once in awhile too,but dont see to much diff in my sl's.. i feel like i have lost as my clothes are looser..ruth congrats on your loss wtg..rosetta glad to here from u too..((((hugs))) and have a great day everyone rosey

Moni28 06-02-2009 12:57 AM

Hey, HOpe all is well with everyone. I have a quick questions....

I've been taking Metformin ER for about 2 months now and tonight i've felt very nauseated. I dont know if it would be the medication after this long or if it is due to my period. Anyone exp this after being on metformin er for awhile?

Ruthxxx 06-02-2009 07:05 AM

MONI, I doubt that it's a side effect of the Metformin after so long. Way back in the dark ages when I got periods, I frequently felt nausea just before the event.

Busy day ahead so I must plan my food. It's way to easy to just grab something when you are flying by! I have to work a Bingo at supper time and must take food so the darned canteen doesn't tempt me. I haven't had fries for over a year and don't intend to break that record with greasy, soggy food!

Have a great Tuesday.

akrosey49 06-03-2009 03:29 PM

Hi everyone..a quiet day here..my dh has gone to anchorage to visit a friend in the hosp..so its just me and the dogs today..my sl was 104 this am..am planning on doing some srapbooking and making the dh a nice dinner..ruth i love to play bingo,i used to go once a week..not so easy to do now..moni,i have never had stomach issues with metformin, hope u are feeling better..u to mewoee..(((hugs))) for all rosey

This forum is really helpful. My father suffered from stroke because of diabetes. This motivates me in reading different forums to make me aware more of diabetes.
