MEL, make some hummus for dipping veggies. Try some other veggies besides carrots too. I love raw cauliflower and broccoli dipped.

Well, I faced the scale today and the results are not pretty. :( My ticker is 2 pounds out - maybe a bit more. Breakfast was brunch at the Legion but I did avoid the pancakes and maple syrup and had just one piece of ww toast. That's a start on cleaning up my act. I can't find my new vial of test strips so have not tested the past two days. Need to remedy that tomorrow.

ruth -
i went to the store yesterday, and i have been craving waffles/pancakes. so i found some kashi waffles with strawberries. the main ingredient is wheat flour, so i figured that was better than enriched white flour!!

Hello everyone!

I'm so grateful to have this website to get support and advice. While I’ve had family members who live with diabetes, its very different now that its me. I had another fasting glucose done this morning and got my results a few mins ago. The first one read 294! and this one read 262...still high but lower. I am anxious to see the doctor on Thursday so I can get more information and an idea of what I’m doing! I'm looking forward to chatting with everyone and taking control.
VermontChick, I agree with the idea of knowing this is you for the rest of your life...but I remind myself it doesn't have to define me! :)

Talk to you all soon!

Hate to have to tell you this MEL . . .

Unless it said 'whole wheat flour' it just means white flour and without the enrichment of adding back two or three little bits of vitamins.

White flour is made from wheat but with the germ (the part with the vitamins and other good stuff) and the bran (the insoluble fibre) removed leaving only the endosperm which is the starchy part. About the only thing that they might do to make it even worse is bleach it to make sure it is as white as possible.

Here's my Protein Pancakes . . . these are really good for you . . . not everybody loves them, of course, but I do . . .

Protein Pancakes

1/2 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup 1% cottage cheese
1/2 cup egg whites

Whiz around in the blender or with a mixer until no longer lumpy. Spray pan with cooking spray and cook like any other pancake. Serve with NSA maple-flavoured syrup or fruit.

Makes 2 good sized pancakes and the whole recipe (not counting what you put on top) has 5 grams of fat; 39 grms of carbs; 6 grams of fibre; 29 grams of protein and 310 calories.

Have you taken a look at the Recipes thread up in the Sticky area?

Hi there MONI . . . glad you found us. We are here and happy to answer any questions. Of course, none of us are doctors so all you get is the benefit of our own experiences.

Oh RUTH . . . I so agree that hummus is a great thing for veggie-dipping. I don't have it too often though because I just happen to prefer it on wasa bread or ryvita. :o

Oops . . . Hi ROSEY . . . glad you had a great outing. I was wondering about you because our regional news this morning was talking about your latest volcanic action. Now you stay away from those little Easter bunnies, Chickie.

Moni28 04-06-2009 02:01 AM

Can you ladies give me an idea of how many carbs I should be aiming for breakfast, lunch and dinner? I am going to see a nutritionist soon and my doc but I would like to have some idea for this week.

Have a great monday ladies!! :) :)

VermontChick 04-06-2009 07:04 AM

i am for having between 20-40 per meal..but everyone is different. what you're trying to figure out is how much sugar your body can handle. the american diabetes association recommends you get between 50-60% of all your calories from carbohydrates. carbs have 4 calories per gram. so, depending on what your daily target calorie count is, you can figure out how many grams of carbs you should be having every day. but you need to space them out all day or else your bs will spike...

good luck.

meowee...the first ingredient is unenriched wheat flour, then the second one is whole wheat flour....there's also 6 grams of fiber...and the serving size is two waffles, i couldn't believe it...

meowee 04-06-2009 07:50 AM

Good Morning SUGAR-BABES . . . :grouphug:

Good answer MEL :high: Just try not to make those waffles a regular thing.

And MONI, try to keep those carbs balanced fairly evenly across the day. Stay away from the highly refined ones and try to make sure that lots of your carbs come from brightly coloured vegetables and some fruits. Personally, I find that a 40% to 50% carb level works better for me, but everybody is different. Here's a link to the ADA site . . . http://www.diabetes.org/ . . . lots of good reading over there.

Well, the above is definitely in the vein of "do as I say, not as I do" this morning:o. I must own up to losing a battle with some Cool Whip last night. Unfortunately Cool Whip (with all that HFCS) and Peanut Butter (too much fat) are my worst triggers. I somehow cannot eat just a TBSP, or two, of either one. Anyway . . . I managed to keep the calorie count (and the overall carb count) within proper limits but the FBGL was 8.2 / 148 this morning.

Hope the rest of you have a really great day and that you see some nice sun. Unfortunately there is nothing but wet and windy in our forecast -- but no snow. :yay:

VermontChick 04-06-2009 04:59 PM

oops, i accidentally posted this on the wrong thread. oh well:

so, i just got an email from my dad. i told him that i recently found out that i am diabetic. he wrote back and said that the 'good news is, if it is caused solely from being overweight, it can go away when you lose weight.'

that would be one example of why i never took my risk of diabetes seriously. i always thought it would 'go away' with weight loss.

i personally feel that type ii diabetes by itself is a lot less serious than morbid obesity, which is also a disease that i have.

so that's how i look at it now.. what do you gals think?

meowee 04-06-2009 05:24 PM

As I've said before . . . Diabetes is an incurable disease . . . you may, after losing all your excess weight, be able to control the disease strictly with diet and exercise (i.e., lifestyle changes) and you may never experience any of the terrible long-term side effects; but you will always be a diabetic. Prediabetes can be completely reversed and therefore eliminated. True Type II Diabetes cannot. I'd suggest you ask your doctor, or preferably a specialist called an 'endocrinologist', exactly what you've got.

All of the syndrome X items are so bad for you it is very difficult to decide if one -- Morbid Obesity -- is any worse than any of the others. On thing that is for sure is that morbid obesity is a serious problem and connected with a lot of possibly fatal diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, and of course, type II Diabetes.

Good Morning . . . :grouphug:

Here's a good article that turned up in my in-box this morning . . . http://www.everydayhealth.com/health...questions.aspx . . . should be of interest to our newest members and don 't forget to read the highlighted branch-off article too.

Other than that . . . well, it's raining again. In other words SSDD around here. Weight blipped upwards to over 209 again but FGL blipped downward to 6.1 (110).

See you later . . .

VermontChick 04-07-2009 07:30 AM

hmm....meowee i will read your article at lunch today...i just wanted to check in and give an update...i STILL do not have a new glucometer. the walmart pharmacy told me that they do not make freestyle flash test strips anymore...which seemed odd cause i see it in online stores...but whatever! so the pharmacist recommended a Relione ultima because the test strips are cheap. well i bought one, and it didnt come with any test strips. i contacted my insurance and they told me they cannot get me strips for it because they only cover specific models. sooooo i need to return the relione, call my insurance and tell them which model i would like (out of their choices).

the choices are between several Acu-chek models, and onetouch models. any suggestions, ladies? i may make this into a new thread so i can pose this question for others to see...

have a good day...

meowee 04-07-2009 01:30 PM

Hi MEL . . . I'm sure you've discovered my comments over in the thread you started on this topic.

VermontChick 04-07-2009 10:26 PM

i did see your comments meowee...thanks for the insight.

i was soooooooooo pissed today when i went to return my relion ultima to walmart and they WOULDNT TAKE IT BACK. my insurance is going to buy me a brand new NICE meter...so what the heck do i need the relion for? i believe them when they say it's a law, but it is not written ANYWHERE that all blood glucose sales are final..that ticks me off. if the pharmacist had told me, i wouldn NOT have bought it. so now i am stuck with this stupid cheap meter, which my insurance wont cover the cost of supplies for.

food today was bad..i caved and ate 12 candy eggs. i also had massive diarrhea later on as a result (thanks metformin).
