Pre-diabetes, do I need a special diet?

  • Hi there . . .

Getting some of the weight off will go a long, long way to correcting your problems. The experts say that even losing 10% of your current weight will help your blood sugar control. Take a look at some of the "Stickies" at the top of the forum for links to various helpful sights.

BTW, "low-carb" is not necessarily a plan for diabetes control. It's far more important to choose "good" carbs (vegetables, fruits, whole grains -- rather than highly refined carbs like white bread and sugar) and to "balance your carb intake" fairly evenly throughout the day in order to stabalize your blood sugar levels as much as possible.

Good luck on the journey to better health and fitness, Chickie. Keep up the good work you are definitely on the right track with the diet and exercise.
  • My husband and I went to the diabetic education counselor yesterday. He is diabetic and now has to take insulin (lantus), and I am prediabetic/insulin resistant and on metformin. The counselor recommended that neither of us follow a low carbohydrate diet. South Beach would be good, if we skipped induction. A diabetic on medications has to eat a certain amount of carbohydrates at each meal, or they will have a low blood sugar reaction.

  • My brother was told he was pre-diabetic a few years ago, and he got back into normal blood sugars by losing weight and walking every day. In the last year or so, he has been gaining again & not exercising and his blood sugars are up in the diabetic range again. So yes, diet & exercise works in the "pre" stage, but you have to keep it up.
  • Lose the weight now, and start exercising! I was told last year that I was pre-diabetic, neither the doctor NOR the dietician explained to me what was happening in my body. Now, of course, that I'm diabetic, the dietician explained that basically, my pancreas was working hard, hard, hard in my pre-diabetic days, and because I didn't change my ways, it basically, permanently, pooped out on me. It has some little function left, but even if I lose weight and exercise now, it'll never get back to the state it was before I was diabetic.

So, I got my master's thesis finished (I was "too busy" to lose weight and exercise) but I put my body on a dangerous road by ignoring the warning signs. Please, please, take care of yourself so that you don't do what I did.
  • I was putting my weight loss on hold too and then one weekend in early April my mom told us she was Diabetic. You can see by my ticker that I was 5'5" and a hair away from 180 lbs. and on my way up, up, up.

After a couple of weeks it hit me, if I kept on this route, Diabetes was pretty much a certainty in my future. I knew too that I didn't want to "diet" again. I did some research and adjusted my diet to kind-of a pre-diabetic meal plan and worked on balancing my nutrition and getting my butt out and exercising. Who knows what heredity will throw me....but right know I'm making, small, better and doable changes. And I know I can life this way for the rest of my life.
