I am a type-1 diabetic and have been for 5 years. Through that time period, i have been diagnosed with 'honeymooning' and did not need to take my insulin because it ment that my pancreas was making it's own natural insulin that it didn't make when i was not 'honeymooning'. I 'honeymoon' for about 2 months at a time every 18 or so months. I have only 'honneymooned' 3 times since being diagnosed with diabetes, and for me it has it's ups and downs. Sure, i don't have to take my insulin during this time, but i feel to fatigued, and breathless. (If i do take my insulin while 'honeymooning', my blood suger level drops and causes a low.) I DO continue to check my blood sugar numbers regularly like i always do.

Blood sugar levels NOT 'honeymooning' before insulin: 190-250

Blood sugar levels WHEN 'honeymooning' without insulin: 85-140


Has anyone ever "honeymooned" before?

Wow, TWEETY, that is a completely new one that I have honestly never heard of before. I was always under the impression that in a Type I, the pancreas simply was incapable of producing insulin at all. Very, very interesting . . . hope someone on here will have an answer for you.

I haven't either; but , my late hubby was brittle and died at age 40.
We wondered if his sometimes put out insulin as his would be 440 in the morning and at times would drop to 40 in the afternoon. Our GP put him in the hospital and just shook his head. The last few years, he wore a pump. That was the closest to normal he ever had. He died in 1984. They found his at 16, after his brother was killed in a car accident. Shock sometimes starts diabetes. Don't know if this helps but something to ponder.

Wow, that is shocking. Diabetes is very bad to put it simply.

my stepdaughter has type 1 diabetes and she also "honeymoons" not for months like you, but she will do it for a few days to a week and not need insulin, and if you do give it she goes really low, she was only diagnosed in october with diabetes and i was under the impression that this honeymoon phase would go away after a few months, but shes still doing it on and off......
