You must have changed your meds to lose all that weight....

A well meaning friend said that to me "You must have changed your meds (she asked what kind I was on..we are bipolar support buddies) to lose all that weight."

I flat out told her NOPE! I worked for this weight loss! I journaled, watched what I ate, counted calories, measured my foods, excercised and to say it was anything but pure hard work discounts everything I worked for ..thank you very much.

She ate her words and apologized but commended me for being able to lose on the cocktail I'm on.

At least the foot in the mouth, cane out of an understanding of the challenges some medications add to weight loss, and not just brainless lip flapping.

I have the same things with my ears too. People assume because I lipread so well and speak well that it is easy and I am "hearing." I work HARD to have those skills and to learn coping strategies. Saying otherwise discounts that hard work. I don't want to be pitied but I don't want to be brushed aside like I don't need help (when I ask for it) sometimes.

I'm BP too, but highly functioning especially compared to some in my family. Mine was triggered after the birth of my 3rd child who is now 3. It's been a grieving process, a process of learning about meds and adjusting them and its been a process to learn triggers (not too much unlike foods and dieting) and coping strategies (not too much unlike having a disability or eating issues/dieting). My biggest regret is that I moved at the same time I was learning all this so I didn't have friends who knew the old me to fall on. I had new coworkers I unburdened on. I'm stable. I'm probably the most stable in my family. It's just taken me a while to accept and learn about how it will fit in my life.

DUH! I just realized bp meds was the subject of this thread. LOL. I should read.

I have a friend with bp and it is a struggle with her meds. Alot of the time her cocktail stops working or the doses need adjusting.
