Started new meds feeling kinda LOOPY

  • ]I went to the Dr. yesterday for a PAP and other things, but my main focus was to get back on meds to help with my anxiety and depression. I got to the Drs. only to find out that they had cancled my apt. once agiain due to the dr. having an unexpected conference. I am not usually one to stand up for myself but I was having panic right there in the office and I demanded that someone see me today!! They got me in to see a different Dr. and he was AWSOME!!! He talked to me like we were friends. We went over all my history and he asked me all about how I feel when I have these problems. I had never had anyone ask me that, they usually just give me depression meds and send me on my way. I have never been properly diagnosed with anything either. He proceeded to tell me that he thinks that I have Bipolar and that the chest pains that I think are panic are from my acid reflux disease. I was FLOORED!! I do have Bipolar in my family and it was always a posibilitly but no one thus far had taken the time to really find out what was wrong with me. He put me on a new medication called Cymbalta and I stared it lastnight. I had alot of restless sleep from it and I have been in this loopy state since I woke up this morning and it is lunch time now. Do any of you have any experience with this medication? I know it takes some time to get use to any meds. but I hope this isn't how this is supposed to be all the time.[/B]
  • Hi there,

Good for you for standing up for yourself.

I would advise you though to take the time to make an apt with a pyschiatrist, they specialize in mental issues. Regular doctors and/or gynos
    do not specialize.

    good luck to you
  • Yeah GOOD FOR YOU !!! I'm so glad your regular doctor wasn't in and you spoke to some one else...whoot!!!! Sorry I can't help you with the meds but I'm sure some one will chime in to help.

HUGS AND WHOOOT TO YOU !!!
  • Thanks everyone! I hope this works. My dr. did say that I should set an apt. with a Phsych. sometime soon. I am gonna try to take the meds in the morning and see if the sleepiness waits until night. The other side effect I had was just NOT being hungry at all. I tried to eat and no mater what I ate it tasted bad. I mean I am greatfull if this means I'll drop weight but not eating is bad for you.
  • Is this your gyn doctor telling you all this?
You said you went in for a pap, so???

Cymbalta, can weird you out. If it is not helping you by now. May not.

Zoloft helps me. {it is going generic very soon} Small dose.
Always start off on a low dose of , anything!!!

Do you need to see a, pyschiatrist? Or are you just down about your weight?
Talk to your regular family doctor first.
  • Bipolar Disorder should never be diagnosed or managed by a family physician or an OB/GYN and someone with Bipolar Disorder should not take an anti-depressant without a mood stabilizer. Most people with Bipolar Disorder I or II will go manic under the influence of an antidepressant that isn't mitigated by a mood stabilizer.

Years ago - before doctors knew that SSRIs and their successors could induce mania - I took Prozac without a corresponding dose of Lithium. I don't remember about six weeks of my life - I was so manic I completely checked out.

That's the only time in 23 years of being diagnosed as Bipolar that I have gone near an antidepressant without making sure someone was watching me closely. I've been hospitalized several times and almost every time someone was in the hospital with me who was having a manic episode brought on by an antidepressant.
  • good advice..... everyone
also it takes six weeks for a med to take effect. Try to rough it out and see if the loppyness goes away.
I have never taken cymbalta but I know friends who are on it and are greatly helped. A psych md will add a mood stabilzer to the cymbalta...
    good luck and keep posting..
  • Good point CJ, I personally have not had this happen but have found that doctors are quick to give out antidepressants without real follow up. I have dealt with this in my sons case. See a pyschiatrist Ms. Pretty, you'll be glad you did. As for Cymbalta, my husband takes it, but was given to him for it's effect on pain more so than the antidepressant factor. He takes lexapro as well. Good luck to you, keep up updated.....
  • Well I haven't been on here in a few weeks. But I wanted to thank you for your support. I did go back to the Dr. and they switched me to Effexor. The Cymbalta was making me a Zombie, I was sleeping all the time and was just in a state of sedation. I feel better now! I did get bad news at the Dr. though....I have a lump in my breast and I have to go for a mamogram. I think that is why I haven't been on very much lately. Just have alot to think about. But I am feeling better about everything now and I will back posting. Thanks Ladies!!
