Chocolate is one of the main reasons I am so fat. Others may be able to have just a little bit. For me, it is an evil substance like crack cocaine.

If I give it up entirely, it's easier to cope with over time; after 3 weeks I barely miss it. But having "just a bit" keeps on stoking the taste buds, and makes me more susceptible to another chocolate binge.

PS I have depression too, long term. I'm on a med that works and that helps a great deal. Also, a decent amount of exercise (eg 1hr a day) seems to lift my moods a great deal, too....

The chocolate monster can be defeated!

I'm also addicted to chocolate. I have a sweet tooth the size of Texas and wake up every morning craving sweets (chocolate especially) like an alcoholic craves liquor. It's horrible and one of the hardest things I've had to deal with each time I try to lose weight.

For me though, it's about how much do I want to lose weight? Do I want it more than I want that chocolate?

I am also a chocolate addict. I remember several years ago (before the weight gain) I would only eat one bag of chocolate a month (during my period). Until two weeks ago I was eating about a bag a week plus other sweets.
Now, working out and eating healthier makes me think twice about my chocolate eating. I allowed myself to buy a bag this month (I'm PMSing) but after about 10 pieces I feel sick to my stomach. I used to be able to eat 1/2 a bag in one sitting.
Sometimes having a glass of chocolate (skim) milk helps control my cravings.
Good luck!

I use bitter dark chocolate-- hardly any carbs or calories. I just sweeten it with stevia or artificial sweeteners. So, you can eat guilt free chocolate, and not binge.

i would strongly suggest avoidance in this case...i have the same problem that you do. if you find that this is the main culprit, why let yourself have a little and risk binging? instead, have fruit and lots of meat and other proteins so you won't crave it. after a few weeks the cravings will be gone...it's the initial cutting out phase the makes it the hardest but YOU CAN DO IT.

I also have an addiction to chocolate. I'm really not sure what's better in terms of total avoidance or moderation, but I just have a really hard time resisting the craving, particularly during my period. I have found Swiss Miss fat free hot cocoa a decent fix. I also find that the darker the chocolate, the less I need of it to feel satisfied.

I'm truly a chocolate addict as well. It's different from merely loving chocolate. I've actually had withdrawal. Shakes, sweats, stomach cramps, the whole bit. But I *refuse* to give it up entirely, as addicts often do, so I keep a supply of powdered cocoa, Hershey's Special Dark. When I feel I really must have chocolate, I add a spoonful to my coffee. And, like JenB, I also have the Swiss Miss. Then there are also Healthy Choice fudge bars.

It's evil, but we can satisfy our addictions without adding the fat, calories, and excess carbs.

Oh I forgot about the healthy choice fudge bars. Those are good. There are also Diana's Bananas which are chocolate covered frozen bananas (the baby bananas are like 130 calories each).

This is making me want chocolate!

GUILTY !!

I tried the dark chocolate but it did not satisfy my craving, so what I "try" to eat is SF or FF chocolate pudding or SF hot chocolate. Some times when I want the salt/sweet thing (like when Aunt Flo is visiting) I'll take a few thin pretzels and dip them in my pudding... kinda like a chocolate covered pretzel.

One thing I won't eat is SF chocolate bars... the gas and stomach pain that stuff gives me is not worth it.

Good luck hon... we really do understand.
