Ophelia get one of those EatSmart scales - you don't have to tap them before you step on. They are great scales.
Also when your scale weighs the same thing 3 times in a row, it is saving the last setting because it might register only a small difference and doesn't post minor deviations each time you step on it (the scale doesn't want to appear inaccurate).
One way to defeat this is to weigh your self with something heavy (pick up the wastebasket in your bathroom or a couple of full bottles of something, 3 or 4 pounds or so.
Then get off the scale, and get back on the scale holding nothing.

So if your scale didn't save the last reading, and it actually displayed your weight to the best of its ability, it would show data like,
1st 130.1
2nd 130.0
3rd 130.1
But the scale doesn't want to seem inaccurate, so it just shows the 1st reading all three times, instead of showing the variations. you just didn't pay for a super super accurate scale.
So if you step on the scale the 2nd time with a 5 pound bag of flour, it will break that cycle - the weight is radically different, and the third reading will be a more accurate rendering of your current weight.

opheliaphoenix: Definitely just go with the new scale reading and move on. Life's too short and this journey is too hard to fret over-much about scale readings. The most important thing we get from the scale isn't the actual number, it's the direction that number is going.

darius: Thank you for the input! I wanted a new scale right away, so I needed to buy one I could get in person. I actually went to BestBuy to check out the EatSmart scales because I'd heard good things about them, but they no longer carried them in store. (I didn't even know BestBuy had scales at all until I saw they were the only place in town that supposedly carried them.) So, I wasn't able to grab one of those. I ended up with a Taylor scale. It seems nice so far! I will keep the EatSmart scales in mind for the future and hopefully will be able to plan ahead a little better next time and not need something that same day again...lol.

gardenerjoy: Okay, that is what I will do! I've made note of it and will move on from here. I know that 2 pounds is just a drop in the bucket when you have as much weight to lose as I will have to lose, but I just wanted to make sure I was being transparent with my weigh-ins! I guess it could have been attributed to a random whoosh just as easily, so no need to really stress about it...lol. Thank you!

--------------------------------------

Okay, I'm just making note of my first reading with the new scale and moving on with its readings from this point on. Out of curiosity, I checked the differences in the new vs old scales last night before bed and again today, and both times it was exactly 2.0 lbs higher on the old one. So, that stayed consistent with different weigh-ins, at least. So, my old scale read 215.8 today, but the new scale read 213.8 for the day. Since I am moving onto the new scale as of today, I am going with the second reading...just wanted to make a note of the transition!

One a side note...for those of you following my DietBet experiement, I was wrong about the official final weigh-in being today. Apparently, the DietBet itself ends tomorrow, but they give you the full day of the final day for any weightloss efforts...which means that official weigh-ins will be submitted on Monday! So, that's like getting two extra days I wasn't expecting to have...lol. I would only be 0.2 lbs away from hitting it on my old scale, and I have surpassed my goal on the new one. I'll be using my new scale for the weigh-in on Monday, but - just in case they have any issues with using a different scale, for consistency - I'll be doing a back-up weigh-in on the old one, so I will want to make sure I surpass my goal on BOTH scales.

Gail Thank you for your kind words. As long as you don't give up, you will definitely be able to!!

joy Sodium gains on the scale are the worst, I hope the water rids itself soon for you!

darius Good job last week!!

ophelia I thought I posted yesterday, but I must have been sidetracked. If the new scale would have read a little bit over your old one, I am assuming you would have been a little bummed out, but would have gone with the new scale reading anyway... so I was going to say that you should go with the new one!! I also bought a new Taylor scale recently and compared my old one to the new one and the new one was 1 lb. lighter than the old one. That is awesome that you have some extra time for your diet bet!!

We went out to dinner last night and I ate probably 3000 calories, no joke. I was up a little bit today but expect that the full effect from that meal isn't showing on the scales yet. Then we went out to breakfast like we usually do on Saturday mornings, and I ate too much there too, but not nearly as many calories as last nights dinner. I am not even close to hungry so I probably wont eat again today, but am trying to drink as much water as possible to offset some of the damage.

Ophelia yep keep the EatSmart scale in mind for some future day - and good luck to you. A scale can drive a person crazy with persistent readings - and when you start mistrusting a scale I feel it is time to throw it out the window.
Kfunk thank you very much! I am not losing a lot but I am just glad I am losing at this time of year. Well my wife died last year so I'm not exactly tripping the light fantastic every night. I love Christmas but I am not enjoying it lately because it was our favorite season of the year.

kfunk: You're right, I would have taken a gain as well. That's a good way to look at it, too! And, I hope the bloat from your meals out flushes back out for you ASAP!

darius: I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your wife...I imagine it is especially hard this time of year. Sending you hugs.

unwanted37lbs: You've been making great progress!

--------------------------------------

Weigh-in was 213.6 today. I'm going to make a point to go on one of my longer walks/jogs today, because I didn't go out Friday and told myself I would do 5 miles last night. I got started late, but figured I would at least get in 3 miles, if nothing else, and then got all the way to the mailboxes around the corner and my FitBit died on me. Now, I know it's about the actual fitness and not about the tracking, but I was frustrated by the bad timing and ended up just going around the block and coming back home. Not going to do that again today. Going to head out, no matter what! I have some catching up to do...lol.
