Professional help?

  • I'm considering accessing dh's EAP to get help for this eating thing. Have any of you been to counseling? There's a well known ED treatment center right here in my area that has outpatient and weekend residential options. I'm a little afraid, though, to do the whole "your mom made you do it" thing. She did, but what good will it do now when I'm almost 40 years old to drag that up again. She's already apologized for being crazy during my entire childhood.

I know what caused it; I just need to know how to fix it. Do they have that kind of therapy?
  • I would recommend you do it. Most counseling these days is geared toward being short-term with the focus on how to fix the problem, rather than the extensive psychoanalysis of yesteryear. You may have to try a couple different counselors before you find one you really have a rapport with.
  • yes! I say go for it! I've been in counseling since March and couldn't be happier.
  • I'd definitely go for it. I think in cases with food issues, psychological help is going to be inevitable. It it but one tool in our box, but a very valuable one if you get into a good program or have a good doctor. I love my time with my therapist and look forward to our visits.
  • I would really like to go to something kind of therapy but there is none here. I say go for it.
