Do you binge on 'healthy' stuff?

Healthy is pretty broad term, but I find that I really can't binge out on veggies and lean meats. There could be a pound of chicken breast in the fridge, but I would never cook it and scarf it all down in a binge.

A pound of salted nuts or a pound of candy though...lol..

Why do you suppose this is? Emotional connections to the flavor?

freelancemomma 10-12-2012 08:52 AM

Same here. Veggies and lean meats wouldn't do it for me as a binge. I can binge out on some relatively healthy foods, like wood-stove vegetarian pizza, but there have to be some carbs and fat in the mix.

Salted candied nuts are probably the most binge-inducing food on the planet. They contain the toxic combo of sugar, salt and fat identified by Dr. David Kessler of "The End of Overeating" fame.

Pizza binge, definitely!!! But lean meat? Or eggs even?? Nooo. (Although as a side note, I was watching Intervention and heard a young lady describe how much it hurt to purge bits of pizza and I haven't been able to look at it quite...the same way since)

I just don't even keep nuts in the house at this point. Smoked, salted almonds OMFG. They're so delicious. Too delicious. People think I'm being funny when I say I could eat the entire container.

If they only knew.

Kery 10-12-2012 09:44 AM

I'd say, there are a lots of emotional aspects to the fact of bingeing—it's not a matter of real, physical hunger, otherwise we'd just stop once the body's got enough. So it does make sense to me that we automatically go towards "comfort foods", the ones that contain a lot of carbs, as well as the fat + carbs combo.

Although I've already binged on frozen raspberries. But they taste sugary, too, which probably explains why.

krampus 10-12-2012 10:07 AM

I've binged on oatmeal and plain yogurt, but that's probably a byproduct of being too diet-obsessed and being HUNGRY.

I like to cook up like two pounds of veggies and eat them while watching TV...something I used to do with junk food. But that's a meal, not a binge.

SoMuchFattitude 10-12-2012 11:17 AM

I'm with Krampus. I can binge on healthy just as easily as unhealthy.

danzingurl77 10-12-2012 12:35 PM

I can binge on healthy foods all day long-- I don't keep treats in my house but somehow I still manage to binge on egg whites and fiber cereal, protein shakes/pancakes, fruits, spaghetti squash... I've had 4,000 calorie days of totally healthy food- nut butters and yogurt can kill me because there is always more room for that... Protein bars are another big trigger for me- I don't know if you'd really count those as "healthy" though.

beth sebring 10-12-2012 01:02 PM

Some foods I stay away from even if they are healthy. Nuts, baked chips, wheat thins, hummus and wraps are the biggies for me. I could eat that stuff all day haha so I find it best just to keep it out of the kitchen lol

I actually read an article about our body having “built in” stress relievers with high fat/carb food. Our body is telling us to obtain as much energy as we can so we can get though the stressful situation. So we start craving the food with the highest fat/sugar. Our body just doesn't realize we have enuff food to last us a lifetime nowadays. haha

Oh, I've totally binged on oatmeal and plain yogurt...then again, I also put artificial sweetener on it which makes it more appealing lol. I eat like a pound of veggies for dinner every night, but like you said, I figure that's a meal, not a binge.

kelijpa 10-15-2012 05:45 PM

OMG, I was just telling DH I was going to have to go on 3FC and post about bingeing (or at least eating 'til I'm uncomfortable) on healthy stuff.

One night he made mashed cauliflower, I think because it was so much like mashed potato, but my mind was saying it's only veg, keep eating...tonight it was homemade split pea soup, I was telling him I felt like I could literally keep eating it 'til it made me sick, it's just so good...

I guess if it bothers me then it's bingeing, just another thing to pay attention to...

best to all

i only ever binge on healthy foods.

the most "unhealthy" binge foods i consume include (and are generally limited to) whole grain breads/unsalted butter. flax crackers, feta cheese (or any other cheese kicking around- all organics), meat, rice, veg, etc.

if i am emotional, like breakup, etc- my standard is a yoga class and a pint of ben and jerrys but i eat, recover and move on.

only once in recent history (4+ months) have i actually GONE OUT to acquire a 2 litre thing of ice cream, m &ms and a slice of pizza. it was gross.

nina cloudstar 10-16-2012 07:11 AM

I am getting better at what I binge on, but for me it is still bread that gets me!! Fresh buttery bread- I could eat a whole loaf.

olleharr 10-16-2012 07:26 AM

Oh yeah. There are some days when I just can't stop. Frozen bananas top my binge list these days. Probably because they are so much like ice cream...yummm!

FlabToFit 10-17-2012 08:30 PM

I have never binged on healthy food..Sugar is my only addiction :-(

Possibly, yes. And since our bodies are still wired like they were 30,000 years ago, probably also we do crave "carbs and fat"... like, "fruit and nuts"... but instead, we go for the uber-carby-and-fatty junk food version of food.

Ekicna 10-18-2012 03:09 PM

I can binge on healthy food. I usually binge on grapes or broccoli.

ADL 10-21-2012 05:22 AM

When you binge you aren't doing it because you are hungry or even because it tastes good. It's all about the chemical reaction all that sugar is having with your brain. Check out this article, it's very informative.....

Sometimes I totally binge on fruit. No, wait. Let me change that to apples. Anyone know the sort called Pink Lady? Well, the ones they sell where I live are sooo good. And everytime someone in my family buys them, well, I could eat like .. a lot of them! We're talking 6-10 apples. They're a huge weakness of mine. :O

IsabellaOlivia 10-22-2012 08:34 AM

In the past I've not binged on healthy food. Potato Chip was my binge food in the past.

ChickieBoom 10-22-2012 01:34 PM

I had a mini binge on baked apples yesterday. I baked 4 apples with cinnamon and Splenda and ate them all for breakfast with some Greek yogurt. Not proud of it but it could have been a lot worse.

Kopuiylopiu 10-25-2012 05:44 PM

I wish I binged on healthy food. I usually go for things like macaroni and cheese, or honestly at times whatever is in the fridge. I feel like i'm just on the ceiling, watching my body sit down infront of the fridge with the door open, and just eat this and that. It's disgusting really :/

Kopuiylopiu 10-25-2012 05:44 PM

^^^
It's also no more. I have high hopes that those days are behind me.

I have "mini binges" on granola bars. I don't consider them true binges because I normally plan for them in my daily food plan and don't go over my calorie target for the day, but I can eat 8-9 for 800-900 calories, and they last much longer than a decadent dessert for the same number of calories. My need to eat a large quantity of them is disturbing, though...borderline binge behavior, in my opinion. But if it keeps me from bingeing on high-calorie foods that would result in 3,500-4,000 calories for the day, I consider it the lesser of two evils. I have to do what works for me!

AmyAmy 10-27-2012 01:10 AM

I can definitely binge on fruit, especially mango and bananas. Another is young coconut. I think I've gone through three whole ones in a day. I especially love the water. I am less likely to binge on them, and I don't end up feeling so sick. I also only end up eating a fraction of the calories. I could never binge on vegetables though. Not even potatoes, or mashed potatoes.

Miss Health 10-27-2012 01:10 AM

You guys who said yes are lucky. I could never binge on healthy food. I binge on chips and lolly cake. D:

Haha y'all should get into the 80-10-10 diet - where you're actually SUPPOSED to eat stuff like an entire papaya. An entire watermelon. 10lb of apples/oranges/whatever. 12 bananas. Things like that for one meal - to LOSE weight :)

I've never gone quite that extreme but that would sure be fun like during PMS time!

And to explain the whole sugar, fat, salt cravings deal - read "The Pleasure Trap" or watch the presentation on youtube. It's about an hour long and kinda older but I swear, it's the best thing you'll ever watch. Like ever. Explains so much.

I've seen people online put on weight following that diet (as well as run into numerous health problems). I do think it would be fun to do for a week, just to see what would happen.

InspiredBy 11-02-2012 11:56 PM

Well, you're supposed to have about 2000 calories of fruit, HARD exercise every day and sleep 12 hours. If you stick to that you can't really gain weight.

If that's a good idea, makes you lose weight particularly quick or realistic as a lifestyle choice is a whole different question but hey, better than binging on candybars and ice cream :)

I could totally do that during PMS week. At least one or two meals a day haha

AmyAmy 11-03-2012 12:02 AM

I think the people I saw were eating more like 3000 calories, and not all were doing excercise. It would definitely be better than bingeing on junk, I agree with you there.

thewalrus0 11-12-2012 04:57 PM

If I'm correct I think there are certain foods, and combinations of flavors, that release dopamine. Kind of like a drug. I think that's where our minds go when we're in a state of binging.

I could be wrong, but that's my theory.

KateB 11-12-2012 05:55 PM

To me binging is eating without being hungry and eating out of control. I try very hard not to do either. But if I feel the urge to binge i try to make it as healthy as possible. I have recognized when i do it I am eating for the sake of eating or trying to stuff my emotions down with food. So I do my best not to keep binge trigger foods in the house. (DH has no weight issues so sometimes there are triger food around.)

Becuase I am trying to overcome binge eating there are a few things I do when I get the urge. First I acknowledge that I want to eat for the sake of eating. Second I trying to figure out what is bothering me and try to sort it out in my head. Finaly if I still think I must eat just to eat, then it has to be something healthy. It is like doing damage control. Most of te time I "Come to my senses" before I done any serious diet damage. Do you have any idea just how many carrots or cucumbers or grapes or grilled chicken breasts ou have to eat before you "red line" on calories??? Also if it is salt I am craving I will salt the heck out of whatever healthy food I am binging on. Might not be good for water retension, but at least it has no calories and gets me through the "crisis".

Buttermochi 11-17-2012 01:00 PM

I've definitely binged on what most would consider healthy foods, as well. I just had a bad habit of wanting to stuff myself until my stomach can't take anymore, and healthy or unhealthy foods would do the trick for me.

There was one instance during my sophomore year of college where I snuck out about 8 regular-sized oranges from the dining hall and ate it all in one sitting! That was completely unnecessary. At least it's better than binging on unhealthy foods with no nutrients, more calories, and more fats, but I know I need to continue working on just not binging.

Dreamer2012 11-18-2012 12:34 PM

I would be very happy if I did binge on healthy foods. But it's just not the case. My binges were always chocolate, sweets, crisps, jellies and anything with sugar.
