So, my thing with calorie-counting is that I start off with a healthy, realistic goal in mind and rapidly start to cut back and back. What I'm doing now that is keeping me from getting to that obsessive, restrictive place is setting a pretty broad calorie range and not totaling my calories until the end of the day, relying on my body cues throughout. Some days, I've only eaten 1100, and some days I've gone as high as 1800. It seems to balance out, and there's still a weekly deficit of about a pound's worth. I know now that I can't be a strict calorie-counter because I do get obsessive, self-hating, and discouraged.
Measuring yourself is a good idea. Your weight can fluctuate greatly day by day on the scale, but you're not going to suddenly gain three inches overnight. But definitely find some way to keep track so you don't get into self-deluding territory.
