I hate the word obese

  • Morbid obesity. Wow that's a real zinger! Gotta feel real confident and sexy after you read that's where you fit. I hate that I care, but I do. I'd love to be in the healthy body weight catagory. Here's to it!!!
  • I'm with you -- obese I can deal with but when they add morbid to it, it just throws me over the edge

Just googled the definition of morbid -- here it is:
    1. suggesting an unhealthy mental state; "morbid interest in death"; "morbid curiosity"
    2. ghoulish: suggesting the horror of death and decay; "morbid details"
    3. diseased: caused by or altered by or manifesting disease or pathology; "diseased tonsils"; "a morbid growth"; "pathologic tissue"; "pathological bodily processes"

    That's just not right!!!
  • I always thought that they could have come up with a better word than "morbid." Morbid connotes death and disease, which obesity is NOT, because it's 100% reversible. It kind of irritates me, because I don't think there's any other disease with the classification of "morbid." They make it sound like a death sentence, which does have some truth, but there IS an effective cure, and formerly morbidly obese people can go on to live long healthy lives. I recently recovered from MRSA (lost half of my femur and nearly died), and I would consider THAT a much more morbid disease than me being more than 150 pounds overweight! I had NO choice on whether I would live or die when I was in the hospital fighting MRSA. When I weighed over 300 pounds with various comorbitities, I had the CHOICE to lose the weight. People who have fatal diseases don't have a choice. I still don't understand that verbiage. I think I will research it.
  • I'm not such a big fan either... "morbidly obese"... blah! It's like "You're fat and stuck with an ugly medical term for it." I'd rather they just have different levels of "fat". Like... kinda fat... fat... super duper fat. I think I'd be okay with being "Super Duper Fat" because then at least I'd be super duper.

LOL, I like the super, duper better than morbid!

I think they came up with that term for the insurance companies. They always need a "diagnosis" for everything.

Honestly, morbid obesity is better than mortal obesity or terminal obesity. In medical terms, morbid means that it increases the risk of serious disease.
  • Quite honestly I would rather my medical chart read..."Lard A$$" than morbidly obese.

    Agreed! Hee hee

Ah. Good to hear the distinction in medical terms.

Terminal/mortal meaning no hope. Morbid meaning higher risk for more disease....yes?
