Default Pnut butter....

OK...is pnut butter THAT bad? I was reading the binge wishes thread and you were talking about NOT bringing up pnut butter cuz you'd want it. Every morning (EVERY) I eat a multi grain english muffin (100cal) with about a tbls. of pnut butter (if that....80 cal) and a tiny bit of sugar free jelly (10 cal) . That's a good "healthy" breakfast I thought and it satisfies all my cravings (sweet, fatty, crunchy! lol) and sometimes......I have a mid day snack of a tbls. of pnut butter and a banana!! I thought, in moderation, pnut butter was pretty nutritious. Any thoughts?

It's the moderation part that's a problem. For me, an open jar becomes an empty jar. If I could eat it moderately, I'd consider it healthy

Agreed. The organic market down the street from me has the best fresh-made nut butters with no sugar or preservatives. I'm sure they would be great sources of protein... if I could only eat a bit at a time!!! I can't... but if you can, more power

I absolutely think peanut butter is a healthy choice. I have a little problem with moderation also. Funny, I never had that problem before I started losing weight, but it seems like every time I have "dieted" in the past, I also ended up craving and bingeing on PB.

I agree 100%. If you can have 1 TBSP of peanut butter, perfect! In moderation it's a very good choice. I do on occasion as well, but certainly not when I'm feeling weak.

It kind of seems to me that peanut butter is a problem for a lot of people. It is healthy -- all nuts are, but too much of any healthy food that's high calorie density isn't a good thing. I used to HATE it when I was a kid -- never touched it. I guess it was lucky -- since I became an adult, I enjoy it now, but past a tablespoon or two, I just lose my appetite for it. I eat it with bananas too.

I was never a fan of peanut butter until I started this diet. While on the prowl for a healthier version (even the reduced fat contains 12.5g of fat) I came across Better N Peanut Butter (damn I just saw the website, they are introducing 2 new flavors Cinnamon Chocolate and Honey Roast DAMN!). This can be bought at Trader Joes. This PB contains only 2.5g of fat, and only 100 calories per 2 TBSP, and it is low sodium.

Recently I was looking for a powder, to add to my chocolate smoothies. Just wanted the PB flavoring, and I came across PB2. 2 TBSP is only 54 calories.

Using Sara Lee's Whole Wheat Delightful bread, and sugar free jelly. A Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich can contain less then 200 calories total.

I absolutely love and adore peanut butter but somehow it isn't a binge food for me. A little for me goes a long way. (Unless we are speaking of Reese Cups, which I could eat 10 of at a time.) Regular peanut butter though, I can easily control myself.

I can do this with all natural peanut butter--no "frankenfood" required! 2 slices Nature's Own whole grain bread (40 cals each), 1 Tablespoon all natural peanut butter (about 95 cals), and 1 Tablespoon no sugar added fruit spread (15-20 calories).

But yeah, the problem for those of us with binge eating issues isn't that peanut butter is unhealthy. Rather, it's that it's often a food that's difficult for binge eaters to control in regards to portion size. I'm lucky in that I don't like to eat natural peanut butter right out of the jar (too sticky and plain), so that has solved the problem for me. Back in the day, though, I could easily consume a whole jar of reduced fat Skippy--my absolute FAVORITE because it seems less sticky--in one day (maybe even in one sitting).

If only peanut butter was sold by the tablespoon it would be OK for me but a 16 oz jar is dangerous. I am struggling now because I "accidently" bought a jar. One bite of PB and the binge is on.

I've had that Better'n peanut butter and I think it's really good.. but to me, it doesn't really taste like PB. It doesn't have the same consistency, really, either.

I still buy it, though, and I do enjoy it.

I agree with everyone who said that moderation is the problem for those of us who tend to avoid it. Also, the p butter without sugar and salt is better for anyone then the other...I've noticed that not only do some low fat p butters have sugar and salt in them, they also have blackstrap molasses No wonder they're so hard to stop eating - all that sugar!

There are little individual packets (about 1 TB) that I can buy at a grocery wholesale place...for those who find that 100 calorie packets help them with portion control, I would definately reccomend trying them. Unfortunately, they do have the sugar and salt.

I love p butter, and if I had more control over how much of it I ate at a time , it would definately be a staple in my house

Like bargoo said, one bit of pb & the binge is on for me! I consider pb & pizza my "trigger" foods. In moderation, both can be healthy foods. But I can not seem to control myself with them

Rarely, RARELY eat it..but today 1/2 cup of reduced fat variety! YIKES! Indeed...more than a meal (hopefully the apple I ate it on offset that a little bit)
