Question for ladies who are low carbing & have PCOS

  • Are any of you taking metformin? Last time I did Atkins I stopped my medication because I just didn't need it. Yesterday I mentioned how this time my body just isn't responding the same way at my PCOS message board. One of the girls suggested that my body had changed since having a baby and perhaps I should go back on metformin. Combined with the lack of success with my diet and my mensus disappearing, I'm inclined to think I'll give it a shot. I hate taking met, though. It makes me feel awful. I also worry about low blood sugar. I'm prescribed 2000mg a day but I would start at 500mg and work my way back up.
  • I dont take anything for my pcos. I even got off the bc pill. My system is a bit wonky, but the dr told me, as long as I was having at least one period every 3 months, not to worry about it. BUT if Im having many within a 2 month time span, Im to go in and reconsider my alternatives.

If I eat op, and keep the carbs under control. I keep my pcos under control. At the moment, its acting up, but its my own fault. Sorry I couldnt be more help.

My pcos really took over my life after my daughter was born(told I couldnt have any kids)...I went up over 300lbs and everything was unbelievably messed up. With diet and exercise I got it under control, then got off the high blood pressure meds and the bc pills. I like it this way much better
  • I'm on 200mg of Spiro and birth control. The spiro was making me sick too, but I just started taking it right before bed and it's all good now. Hope you can find a good doctor to consult about starting the met or another medicine Oh, and nice to meet ya!!

  • What you all are on meds? I was diagnosed in 2000 and the only thing they gave me was a nuva ring (which I kept getting infection after infection) and Bextra. And Bextra was pulled by the FDA. Now I'm worried....should I be on meds? Good thing I have a OB appt on the 28th of this month. UGH!!!

Okay...so the Atkins is working well for you gals? I have tried WW and JC and both I failed miserably at. Have not tried the Atkins because I was warned by Docs that it was not a "good" diet. Maybe I will look into this.
  • Kristen,
I never even considered doing Atkins until I went to my doctor telling him that I HAD to do something about my weight (250 lbs) and it is the first thing he suggested.

Regarding the meds, each doctor and person will be different. I was put on meds to slow hair growth and to hopefully kill the little testosterone cysts in my ovaries (if I understand what my doctor said). It may all be in my mind but I feel like a more 'even' and calm person now and the facial hair growth has slowed tremendously. Even though my tubes are tied I take the b/c to regulate my periods (which are still not regulated).

I think it's so awesome that Robin does it drug free, I truly hope that someday I'll be able to ditch the drugs too

The trick is to find a doctor that you trust and go from there
